The Last Man is the fifth episode of the third season of Father Brown.

Kembleford's new cricket captain is framed for the murder of the team's loutish star bowler, and Father Brown must prove his innocence to give the team any chance of beating the neighboring village.


Tropes:

  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Jane Milton had a weak heart and stopped taking her medication once she decided to commit the murder, knowing her health would fail before she could be arrested and tried.
  • Cricket Episode: The arrest of the new cricket captain of Kembleford's cricket team for the murder of the team's fast bowler, a suicide the year before in the cricket pavilion, and a match against a rival village to determine the ownership of the cricket ground finds Father Brown consoling the victim's mother, solving a murder involving blackmail, playing cricket and watching Lady Felicia as the last man of the innings.
  • Down to the Last Play: With three balls left and six runs needed to win, the opposing team engages in some Unnecessary Roughness to knock out Kembleford's star player with a cricket ball to the head. Kembleford already being a man down, Lady Felicia goes in as last man, and hits a six on the final ball.
  • I Have Brothers: Lady Felicia explains that her four brothers used to use her to practice their bowling, and she became an adept batsman in the process.
  • Politically Correct History: The episode touches on attitudes towards gay people and Indians.
