Recap / Family Guy S 17 E 5 Regarding Carter

Go To

After a gunshot to the head wipes his memory, Carter tries being a better person. And Lois gets in the father-daughter time she missed growing up.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Biology: While a gunshot to the head is survivable (it might not seem like it, but depending on the angle and whether or not the bullet hits a part of the human brain needed for survival, it can happen), Carter's personality would've been severely damaged (i.e he would have lost his sense of inhibition, develop a low attention span and it would have damaged his mental processing abilities), but his memories wouldn't be affected. If the bullet hit his hippocampus then he would have developed anterograde amnesia, which would affect his ability to create new memories. Since the bullet hit the right side of his head, he'd likely have paralysis on the left side of his body. No, getting shot in the head again won't reverse the effects of Carter's brain damage, actually, he'd likely be more worse for wear afterwards.
  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: At the end of the episode, Peter says Stan Smith also owns a gun and expects American Dad! (which moved to TBS several years prior to this episode's premiere) to be up next. When told of the scheduling change, he asks if Fox at least replaced that show with something as or more successful, but no one answers.
  • Brutal Honesty: In order to help Carter regain his memory of where he works, Lois brings up terrible things that he did as a cutthroat business man without even sugarcoating them. Carter himself is horrified over his own actions.
  • List of Transgressions: Lois outlines all the horrible things Carter and his business did:
    • He puts pesticides in baby food.
    • The chemical waste from his company gave an entire town cancer.
    • He burned down the Amazon rainforest.
    • He's the most frequent producer of whale meat.
    • He dumped lead into the town's supply of drinking water.
    • His oil pipeline forced 12 Native American tribes out of their homes
    • His fertilizer plant killed 4000 people after it exploded.
    • He bought Vine and shut it down.
    • He bought Vine and shut it down.
    • He bought Vine and shut it down.
    • He engages in gratuitous animal testing, such as forcing monkeys to watch dozens of hours of bad shows so humans don't have to.
  • Mood Whiplash: At the end of the first act when Lois shoots her dad, the seriousness is cut short when Carter pet parrot announces that "Family Guy will be right bawwk". Lois lampshades it.
Lois: Well now it doesn't seem so serious.
  • Negative Continuity: Peter finds a gun hidden with Chris's adoption papers. However, a previous episode showed a picture of a haggard Lois immediately after giving birth to Chris.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Again, at the end of the first act, when Lois acknowledges the overhead crane shot zooming out signifies her Dad's soul vacating his body.
  • Self-Deprecation: Peter shoots the TV because The Orville is on.
Chris: Why do you hate that show so much?
Peter: [with a different voice] Because it's preventing me from doing my work here at Family Guy.
  • Shout-Out: One of the bad things Carter's company did was to buy Vine and shut it down. The clip of Lois telling Carter this is shown three times, referencing how the website used to only allow six-second clips when it was still active.
  • Status Quo Is God: Carter is returned to his usual jerkish self when Babs shoots him in the head again.
