Recap / F Is For Family S 2 E 5 Breaking Bill

Go To

After Frank learns that Kevin and his band are performing on a school night, his attempts at halting it cause intense tension between him and Kevin. Meanwhile, Bill, having received money from his job as a paperboy, tries to buy a hockey-stick for hockey tryouts, but a run-in with the local bully, Jimmy Fitzsimmons, pushes him over the edge. Also, when Sue pitches her idea, she still receives a lack of respect.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Bill earning enough money to buy a hockey stick becomes this when Jimmy steals some of the money and Bill is a bunch of dollars short to buy a hockey stick and can't even afford a cheaper one due to money inflation.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Kevin gets one when Frank tells him that he's not allowed to play with his band tonight.
  • Defensive "What?": Gene has one when the other partners look at him weirdly for showing interest in Sue's presentation while the others are scornful about it.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Frank storms over to Vic's house to complain, but he's momentarily distracted by Cutie Pie answering the door.
  • Freudian Slip: While telling Kevin off, Frank yells that he can't be a pilot... then he backtracks to mean rock star.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Jimmy does suffer some repercussions for his bullying when Bill frames him for stealing a hockey stick. Unless you count the Murphy family going ballistic at him and his Dad in the season 1 finale, this was certainly long overdue.
  • Lame Comeback: Angry at being told that he's forbidden to go out with his band tonight, Kevin tells his father that he will never give him backstage passes.
  • Loophole Abuse: Susan begs Frank not to approach Kevin over his gig tonight, so he approaches Vic instead.
  • Match Cut: Depressed over his situation with Kevin, Frank looks up at the sky to see an airplane commencing a landing. The scene fades to a different plane years ago with a younger Frank and Bob Pogo watching.
  • The Punishment Is the Crime: Angry at Kevin leaving his room to meet his bandmates for their gig, Frank follows them to give them a piece of his mind. But he then sees that their "gig" is actually set at a nursing home with frail elders, not rock fans. After the lousy show, Frank tells Kevin that he was planning on grounding him, but he feels that their pitiful attempt at getting an audience was punishment enough.
  • Right Behind Me: Frank is complaining to Vic about how he's a bad influence on his son, and warns him to stay away from him, but Kevin saw this and shows up behind him to yell back at him.
  • Shout-Out: The episode's title is an allusion to Breaking Bad, with Bill feeling disrespected similarly to Walter White, sliding into delinquent behavior, and using others to cover it up. FIFF creator and star Bill Burr guest-starred in a few of the later episodes of Breaking Bad as Patrick Kuby.
