Recap / Doom Patrol 2019 S 3 E 04 Undead Patrol

Go To

The strange new arrival at Doom Manor attempts to track down her missing memories and her need to find Niles Caulder. The Doom Patrol's trip through the afterlife has larger consequences than expected as the team is slowly zombified. Willoughby Kipling fights off an old enemy from the Bureau of Normalcy.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Amnesiac Dissonance: Laura de Mille finds it hard to believe that she was evil, certain that she would know if she was a bad person.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It initially seems like Larry's belief that he's dying results from his slow zombification. Then he finds a tumor after he's "cured."
  • Calling the Old Man Out: After learning that experimental synthetic skin could have been used to save his life, Vic calls out Silas for possibly using him as a lab experiment first and a son second.
  • Eating the Enemy: How Zombie Jane deals with the Butt attacking her, although the others are too grossed out by the idea to do the same.
  • Killed Off for Real: Niles's only clear route to being revived is cut off here and Kipling, no stranger to magical resurrection, seems to believe this is his final fate.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After being turned into a zombie Cyborg notes that it's weird that he doesn't want to eat Darren, which foreshadows his nonhuman status.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: Darren can seemingly control his Were-Butt condition on command, although his ranting suggests it's become a problem at public events.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: The Undead Patrol are clearly sentient and can communicate with Kipling, but are driven by their violent pursuit of brains. Cliff's metal also oxidizes in place of decaying flesh. It isn't clear if the condition is contagious until a Were-Butt becomes a zombie. Eating brains actually returns the team to life.
  • Secretly Dying: Larry quickly catches on that life without the Negative Spirit is taking a toll on him.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Cliff is notably closer to his traditional role as The Heart in this episode, offering genuine advice to Jane and helping her navigate the Chief's death.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's left unclear if Darren dies in his brawl with the Patrol or if he's the zombified butt that escapes.
