Tropes:
- Dead Guy Junior: Played with. Iris’ brother Devon got married and had a daughter of his own, giving her Iris as a middle name.
- It's All My Fault: Devon grew up thinking that he drowned his own sister in a botched baptism.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Obnoxious and negligent babysitter Brie bragged in 1982 about her family's connections and using it to push people around and avoid accountability for her actions. Nearly 25 years later, she is implied to be living a more modest lifestyle. Also, she was seen to be smoking back in her teens which took such a toll on her looks, she looks even older than the other babysitter/suspect Marta, who was already an adult in 1982.
- Parents as People: Deconstructed. Roger and Molly Felice do have lives outside of their children, but neither's is particularly healthy; whereas he is carrying on an affair with Molly's so-called best friend, she is Married to the Job and has postpartum psychosis that leads to the baby's death.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: When Devon and former babysitter Marta discover current babysitter Brie making out with her boyfriend and Marta threatens to tell the Felices, Brie gloats about her family's money and connections and threatens to have her deported.
- Snow Means Death: How Molly killed Iris: in the midst of her postpartum psychosis, she laid down with Iris in the middle of a freak snowstorm outside. Once she eventually came to her senses, she realized that her little girl had frozen to death.
