Recap / Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 8

Go To

Denji turns down Himeno's proposition, as they instead decide to help each other get together with Makima and Aki, respectively. The next day, Makima and Division 4 are attacked by gunmen working for the grandson of Denji's old debtor.

The ending theme for this episode is "First Death" by TK from Ling tosite sigure.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The episode begins with an anime-original scene showing Himeno carrying Denji into her apartment and bed, going off to get a beer from the fridge.
  • Bait-and-Switch: With the montage of Division 4 being killed by gunmen reaching into their jackets to pull out guns, the audience is initially expecting Katana Man to pull a gun on Denji and gang... only to actually pull out a photo of himself and his grandfather. Katana Man then actually pulls out a gun.
  • A Death in the Limelight: This episode focus a lot on Himeno, and ends with her dying.
  • Indirect Kiss: In a flashback, we get to see that Makima and Denji shared one, through the lollipop Makima was eating.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Himeno dies in an attempt to save Aki and Denji's lives.
  • Pair the Spares: Himeno suggests this to Denji when they form their alliance: Himeno will help to hook up Denji and Makima and he will help Himeno to get together with Aki. Of course it's rendered moot by the episode's end.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: Since this is an anime, the adaptation can't feasibly recreate the Panel Break that the Curse Devil does, and instead resorts to doing something similar to what MAPPA had done with the Ghost Devil; the Curse Devil's finger comes from off-frame, appearing as if the rest of it is somewhere off-camera.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Himeno makes an offer to form an alliance with Denji, in which she will help him to get together with Makima, and in exchange, Denji will help Himeno to get Aki.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: Serene music plays as Division 4 are ambushed by gunmen.
  • Wham Episode: This episode firmly establishes that Anyone Can Die, with numerous Special Division 4 Devil Hunters, including Himeno, being dispatched by Sawatari, Katana Man, and their lackeys in one fell swoop.
  • Wham Shot: The aforementioned wham begins with a gun being pointed at Makima and her security in the train.

Katana Man

Gigguk explains how Katana Man's appearance changes up how Chainsaw Man is viewed, changing it from what was basically Shonen It's Always Sunny into a Postmodern Shonen Devilman, complete with Makima making the otherwise black and white morality into a more grey and grey morality.

How well does it match the trope?
