Recap / Carmen Sandiego S 4 E 05 The VILE History Caper

Go To

V.I.L.E. learns that a tomb created by its founders has been found. El Topo and Le Chevre are sent to recover the emblem of V.I.L.E., which has Nordic runes leading to the second map. Brunt and Maelstrom team up to investigate. Carmen has Julia and Player work together to find the second map. It turns out to be part of a Viking ship. Brunt accidentally causes a cave-in, nearly drowning herself. However, both parties get a clue to the final map.

Tropes

  • Ancient Conspiracy: V.I.L.E. is revealed to have been around since Medieval times.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It seems Brunt is Killed Off for Real, drowning because the armor she put on was too heavy to swim with. She is later seen staggering on the side of the road and is picked up by Maelstrom, alive but most likely suffering from hypothermia.
  • Blatant Lies: Maelstrom claims he most certainly was not leaving Brunt behind after retrieving the map, even after she points out his packed bags.
  • Call-Back: Brunt notes that the last time she saw Shadowsan was back in "The French Connection Caper".
  • Enhance Button: El Topo and Le Chevre's selfie with the first relic is of high-enough definition that the runes can be read after zooming in.
  • Kick the Dog: Maelstrom is fully willing to leave Coach Brunt behind to drown. The only reason he doesn't is because she pulls herself out of the water and walks all the way to find him.
  • Norse by Norsewest: Maelstrom is confirmed as Scandinavian when he translates the Nordic runes and claims "My Norse ancestry finally put to some practical use." while Brunt accompanies him pointing out he's not exactly built like a Viking saying he'll need protection.
  • Origins Episode: This time, for V.I.L.E. itself.
  • Sigil Spam: The V.I.L.E. symbol seen everywhere since the show started is finally revealed, via one of the three relics, to have been around since the group first formed in the Middle Ages—when it wasn't the letter 'V' but the Roman numeral V, standing for the five founders from five different regions of the world.
