Recap / Carmen Sandiego S 4 E 02 The Big Bad Ivy Caper

Go To

Carmen and Ivy intercept V.I.L.E.'s attempt to sell stolen gold bullion, while Zack looks after an incapacitated Shadow-san. Meanwhile, ACME further interrogates Graham.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Bellum enjoys some of Brunt's snark at Bellum's ambiguous statement.
Dr. Bellum: If we remove human error from the equation, our success rate would skyrocket, and I would no longer be tasked with wiping memories of VILE from our former students.
Coach Brunt: So you're gonna train monkeys to steal for us?
Dr. Bellum: [cackles] ...It is quite funny if you picture it.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • It was initially believed that Shadow-san wants to teach Zack on how to be a proper ninja yet in reality he's trying to make him to stay silent without bothering his recovery.
    • Said word-for-word when Bellum's robot snatches her goggles rather than obeying her.
  • Batman Gambit: Shadow-san tries to use this on Zack by pretending to give him some ninja lessons just to keep him quiet. However, it took him 2 tries since the first lesson isn't suitable enough for him until he resorts to use a pressure point pinch to subdue him.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The device used to retrieve Graham's memories of being Crackle in V.I.L.E is later used in "The Dark Red Caper."
  • Continuity Nod: Carmen sadly notes that she hasn't called the cops on an representative on V.I.L.E since Graham in the pilot.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Shadow-san's leg is in a cast, requiring Zack to care for him. Player is also starting public school, meaning that Carmen only has Ivy for help in this caper.
  • Everything's Better With Chocolate: V.I.L.E was going to cover the gold bullion in chocolate. Ivy herself mutters that chocolate is her weakness. She also weaponizes melted chocolate as an oil skid.
  • Girl's Night Out Episode: The focus of the episode is on Carmen and Ivy working together.
  • Hollywood Density: Gold is about 27× the density of chocolate. V.I.L.E. trying to smuggle gold as chocolate would be spotted immediately by anyone paying attention.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: A.C.M.E.'s device undoes V.I.L.E.'s memory wipe, a clearly unintended effect.
  • Pressure Point: Shadow-san knocks Zack out with a pressure point on the back of his neck, under the guise of training him, in order to get some peace and quiet.
  • Shout-Out: Carmen almost falls into a vat of chocolate, similar to what happened to Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Even better? This episode takes place in Germany, where Augustus is from.
  • Title Drop: Ivy states that she has some "Big Bad Ivy" in her.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While still not on Carmen's level, Ivy is shown to have gained some levels in combat, as she's the one who lands the final kick on Dr. GoldLove. She also was able to improv and fool Dash to believing she was Dr. GoldLove.
  • Villain Ball: V.I.L.E. still hasn't sent around images of Ivy to their operatives in the event Carmen's crew shows up. Otherwise, Dash would have recognized Ivy as one of Carmen's crew.
  • Wham Episode: Graham regains his memories of V.I.L.E. thanks to A.C.M.E.
