Recap / Carmen Sandiego S 3 E 02 The Day Of The Dead Caper

Go To

It's the Day of the Dead in Mexico City as Carmen tries to deter a wannabe crook from crossing a line she can never return from.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Zack and Ivy are saved from being electrocuted from the Contreras' trap because they're not into cultural preservation of the artifact like Carmen was.
  • The Atoner: Sonia sets out to steal back everything that she previously stole for Contreras, inspired by Carmen, Zack, and Ivy.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Seriously, Contreras - why did you not just keep your book on you?!
  • Haggis Is Horrible: V.I.L.E.'s version of bobbing for apples replaces the apples with haggis, to Coach Brunt's dismay. She eagerly welcomes the first excuse available to get out of the game.
  • Halloween Episode: V.I.L.E is all decked out for Halloween, and the caper takes place on the Day of the Dead.
  • Impossible Theft: Sonia repeatedly steals Spinkick's boots, while he is wearing them (and even standing up on them!).
  • Monster Clown: Maelstrom's costume, complete with a terrifying persona he calls "Charlie Pants."
  • Put on a Bus: Julia parts ways with ACME, seeking an academic career instead.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Julia asks to resign from ACME to pursue an academic career, Chief accepts it with grace and tells Julia that her position will always be open, despite Julia having talked back to her just moments earlier.
  • Schmuck Bait: Contreras tosses a priceless artifact into Carmen's hands that shocks her. However, when she tries it on Zack and Ivy, it shatters as neither of them are really into cultural preservation nor do they have Carmen's reflexes.
  • Sticky Fingers: Sonia is really good at pickpocketing, which is how she made a living after her parents died. In the end, she decides to use those skills to return everything she stole to their rightful place.
  • Villains Out Shopping: The V.I.L.E. faculty really get into the spirit of the holiday- wearing costumes, carving Jack-o-Lanterns, and bobbing for apples (though the apples get swapped out for haggis).
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Zack, having eaten way too many tacos, pukes into a large vase — which is where Contreras placed her clients list after Ivy fishes it out.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: After hearing a report of failure from Spinkick and Flytrap, Coach Brunt smashes her pumpkin out frustration splattering the remains over the Faculty's faces. Countess Cleo's remark: "Worse. Halloween. Ever."
