Recap / Captain N The Game Master S 1 E 6 Wishful Thinking

Go To

The N Team finds a magic lamp, but King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard steal it and use the genie's magic to take over Metroid, while Kid Icarus deals with the problems of being too small, then too big.

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Kid Icarus feels inadequate and wishes to be a giant because he thinks that'll fix his problem. He still feels inadequate, and meets a philosopher who teaches him being big and powerful doesn't matter if you don't have confidence.
  • Benevolent Genie: The episode might be seen as a critique of the then newly-developed game patch devices.note  The N Team comes across a lamp containing a calm albeit snarky genie and uses his magic to make wishes. Kevin wishes for enhanced skills, and quickly realizes Victory Is Boring. Mega Man wishes for enhanced strength, and nearly knocks down the palace. Princess Lana immediately wishes that "no one had made any wishes", returning things to normal for the moment so they can get on with the plot.
  • Extendo Boxing Glove: The booby traps set in the remodeled Metroid all seem to involve these.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Wombatman can be seen among the spectators in the quick baseball scene.
  • Idiot Ball: The N team catches it hard this issue and passes it from person to person. As was usual for genie stories in episodic cartoons of the time, not one person tries to use it to solve major narrative problems, which stands out a lot more in a good-vs.-evil plot like Captain N had.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: Kevin wishes to be unbeatable, but after literally a minute realizes he's bored if he's achieving something he didn't work to master himself.
  • Status Quo Is God: Like Aladdin after him, Kid Icarus wishes for the genie to be set free from his lamp to keep its powers from being misused again. Before using Phenomenal Cosmic Power to do anything like wish Lana's father home, or to defeat Mother Brain for good.
