Recap / Bones S 6 E 22 The Hole In The Heart

Go To

Jacob Broadsky once again surfaces, this time hinting that he intends to go after the Jeffersonian team to draw Booth into a confrontation. After he kills Vincent Nigel-Murray (on accident, though, as the intended target was Booth) the final showdown between Booth and Broadsky ramps up. Brennan takes solace in Booth's arms, implying in the next scene that she slept with him. Meanwhile Booth faces off with his former mentor and is forced to use unorthodox methods to capture him. In the end the team honors Vincent by singing his favorite song, "Coconut" while taking his body to be sent to England.

Tropes

  • Bittersweet Ending: The Squints pay tribute to Vincent Nigel-Murray by singing his favorite song as they place his casket in the hearse.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: For the final sniper cat-and-mouse showdown with Booth, Broadsky, as trained snipers are taught to do, camped out on the high ground. Unfortunately, he forgot that in their previous encounter Booth shot his rifle out of his left hand, and then hit someone in the face with it, mangling it; therefore he can only rest the gun barrel on his arm and is incapable of gripping the barrel and aiming downwards. This allows Booth to do the exact same thing to his other hand before he can change cover.
  • Foreshadowing: Just before he gets shot, Vincent says, "I feel like I'm going to be dead soon."
  • Killed Off for Real: Vincent Nigel-Murray, shot in the heart by Broadsky. And the creators of Bones said they killed him "for heartbreak"... well, they got it.
  • Preclimax Climax: The circumstances of Booth and Bones finally hooking up. Booth was planning on finally confronting Broadsky the next day.
    • Sex for Solace: It also occurs the night after Vincent's death, and Brennan's conversation with Angela implies that she thinks grief was a factor.
  • Sniper Duel: Broadsky and Booth's final hide and go seek sniper showdown is not only of their skills but their philosophies. Booth has pursued Broadsky to his base of operations, a Container Maze where Broadsky is not only intimately familiar with the territory but armed with a customized precision rifle that insanely outperforms Booth's FBI-approved mass-production longarm. But Booth has Bones and the squints, who figure out that as a result of the previous encounter, Broadsky's right hand is broken, therefore he can only rest the gun barrel on his arm and is incapable of gripping the barrel and aiming downwards. This allows Booth to do the exact same thing to his other hand before he can change cover, taking Broadsky alive.
  • Trailers Always Lie and/or Trailers Always Spoil: The trailer cuts to black at end but features a voice-over by Brennan. This gave away that not only was she safe but that whoever did get shot was going to be with her. Which made it extremely obvious Nigel-Murray was going to die when he appeared in the scene with Brennan and Booth.
  • Wham Episode: The season's main villain kills Mr. Nigel-Murray and Booth finally manages to take him down.
