Recap / Beetlejuice S 1 E 1 Critter Sitters

Go To

It's almost the 1-year anniversary of the day Beetlejuice first met Lydia, so he gets the idea to take up babysitting in order to raise money to buy her a present. But Neitherworld babies are a much bigger handful than human babies, and he quickly finds himself in over his head— so much so that he's dragged before court and risks being fed to Sandworms!

This episode contains examples of:

  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The episode begins with Beetlejuice directly Breaking the Fourth Wall, something he wouldn't do in future episodes.
  • Face Your Fears: When Arlo, the baby Lydia is babysitting, winds up in the path of a Sandworm, Beetlejuice works up the courage to fight off and rescue the little guy.
  • Fountain of Youth: Beetlejuice accidentally turns himself into a baby after he says that hanging around the babies he's been watching makes him "feel like a kid again".
  • "I Am" Song: When Lydia pleads with the court to let him explain in his own words why he deserves another chance, Beetlejuice performs a short one of these, fittingly called "Ghost with the Most".
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: It's established here that Beetlejuice tends to turn into anything based on whatever figure of speech he says, making it more of a literal translation.
Lydia: Beetlejuice, have you seen a doctor about this problem of yours?
Beetlejuice: What do ya mean "problem"? I'm fit as a fiddle! (turns into a large fiddle) Strong as an ox! (turns into an ox and moos) I get a kick outta life! (rears one of his hind legs up)
Lydia: (holds her hands up defensively) I get your drift, Beetlejuice.
  • Literal-Minded: When he gets the idea to raise some money to buy Lydia's present, BJ thinks that babysitting involves actually sitting on babies.
  • Loser Friend Puzzles Outsiders: Judge Mental and all those present in the Neitherworld court are utterly baffled by Lydia not only coming to Beetlejuice's defense, but outright calling him her best friend.
    Lydia: I object, Your Honor!
Judge Mental: What are you, some kind of sicko? We can get rid of this disgusting creep forever!
Lydia: This "disgusting creep" is my best friend!
    Beetlejuice: Yeah!
Judge Mental: You mean you hang around with Beetlejuice on purpose?!
    Lydia: (proudly) Yes, Your Honor.
    Crowd: WHY?
Lydia: Because, he makes me laugh! And he knows 101 ways to eat beetles.
    Crowd: (Groans in disgust)
  • Mythology Gag: At the start of the episode, both Beetlejuice and Lydia sing Harry Belafonte's "Day-O", which was basically the movie's unofficial theme song.
