  • A Birthday, Not a Break: On his 17th birthday, Spencer learns that his mother and Baker had a fling in the past, assuming that his father left because of it.
  • Broken Pedestal: Upon learning that Corey actually has been living in Los Angeles for a while yet never once visited the James residence, Spencer says he's over him.
  • Gayngst: Coop refuses to go out with Patience because she feels that something is wrong with herself ever since her mother kicked her out of the house for being a lesbian.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Jordan immediately tries to find Asher after Olivia reveals that she slept with him.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Willy disapproved Billy's marriage to Laura. It was the reason why they became estranged in the first place.

  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Baker denies that he is Spencer's father, and Corey James is revealed to be a different person. However, the ending implies that Baker did have a history with Corey and Grace, something that will break Spencer's heart should he someday know about it.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Despite their estrangement, Spencer wants to meet his dad so he can show him what a man he has become.
