Playing With / Wrong Song Gag

Go To

Basic Trope: A character in charge of audio accidentally plays the wrong song.
  • Straight: The Utropian anthem is due to be played upon the country's representative winning a medal, but Bob the sound operator accidentally plays "Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin instead before finding the right button after a few seconds.
  • Exaggerated: Bob accidentally plays several wrong songs, eventually triggering random animal noises and cartoon sound effects before finding the Utropian anthem.
  • Downplayed: Bob accidentally plays a primitive recording of the Utropian anthem with archaic lyrics instead of the more polished, rewritten version.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is meant to play "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz, but he accidentally plays the song of the same name by BTS, since his control panel only displays the song names and he had no way of telling which was which.
    • Bob has large fingers and accidentally pressed the wrong button, despite knowing which one he wanted to hit.
  • Subverted: Bob reaches for a button on his sound panel, only to realize it's the wrong one. He then hits the correct button.
  • Double Subverted: The previous sound guy had accidentally rebound the button Bob had assigned to play the Utropian anthem, resulting in the wrong song playing anyway.
  • Parodied:
    • Bob accidentally plays a scathing parody of the Utropian anthem from a movie, much to the anger of the country's people.
    • Bob plays a loud dubstep remix of the Utropian anthem, featuring harsh bass drops, chopped-up vocals, abrasive synths and air horns, after downloading it off Youtube thinking that it was the normal song. All the Utropian athletes and supporters start dancing, so Bob just rolls with it and keeps the remix going.
  • Zig-Zagged: The intro to "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye starts playing, only for it to transition into the instrumental for the Utropian anthem, which happens to be at the same tempo. However, lyrics from STIUTK are then mashed up with the instrumental.
  • Averted:
    • Despite otherwise being forgetful, Bob manages to play the right song.
    • Bob is never approached to be the sound guy.
  • Lampshaded: An old man muses to his wife, "The lyrics to our anthem are much different than I remember..." while The Bad Touch blares over the speakers.
  • Invoked:
    • Alice deliberately switches the songs on Bob's soundboard to get revenge on him over a stunt he'd pulled on her earlier.
    • A disgruntled Bob is on his last day of the job, and voices his displeasure by deliberately playing a song with very NSFW lyrics on said day.
  • Defied: Bob makes sure to mute the speakers that broadcast his sound so he can test the buttons. That way, he can be sure which button to hit.
  • Discussed:
Bob: I'm gonna get fired for sure...
    Alice: What? Whyever so?
Bob: I accidentally played Highway to Hell at the client's grandmother's funeral instead of What A Wonderful World...
  • Conversed: "How do the sound guys always mess up the music? You'd think they'd memorize the button layout before any of this starts..."
  • Implied: Charles discovers that instead of the BGM records for the 17:00 channel 9 show, the bag he carried contained the foley discs for the 16:30 channel 8 show , and since Bob is known for autopiloting while foleying…
  • Played for Laughs: Bob accidentally plays a song that's completely inappropriate for whatever event he's providing music for.
  • Played for Drama: Bob has pulled this stunt one too many times, and this time it winds up getting him fired.
