Go To

Basic Trope: A character who chooses to be alone.

  • Straight: Paul willingly chooses to be away from people.
  • Exaggerated: Paul chooses to be away from any people, creatures, and inanimate objects that could conceivably be a companion for him, such as bugs, plants, and stuffed animals.
  • Downplayed: Although Paul doesn't mind being around people, he always chooses his solitude.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Paul is enjoying his life alone until he realizes that he misses the company of people.
  • Double Subverted: ...only to leave on his own after everything just got out of hand.
  • Parodied:
    • Paul is a literal hermit crab.
    • Paul enjoys solitude so much that he remains cheerful and positive even when he accidentally causes a fire in his kitchen. The instant a firefighter shows up, Paul is suddenly so sad that he points a gun to his own head.
  • Zig Zagged: Paul only chooses to be alone whenever drama strikes or if people won't allow him to have his space and chooses to be with others if he feels lonely or when he's needed.
  • Averted: Paul doesn't choose to be a loner and stays around people.
  • Enforced: The writer wants to create a character and use him as a Take That! to people who believe that Loners Are Freaks.
  • Lampshaded: "You sure enjoy being alone a lot, don't you?"
  • Invoked: Paul plans to live Off the Grid and buys a book titled "The Joys of Privacy and Solitude".
  • Exploited: Bob wants to vent about a terrible or embarrassing secret to another person. He chooses Paul, knowing that it'll stay secret since loners don't care for human interaction.
  • Defied: "What am I thinking? I don't want to be alone. Humans are social beings after all."
  • Discussed: "I will never understand people who enjoy being alone than being with people."
  • Conversed: "Why does it seem that in this episode, Paul enjoys being a loner?"
  • Implied: For no specified reason, every single interaction Paul has with other characters is initiated by them, and he is otherwise always on his own.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Paul's inclination in being alone earned him negative feedback from those who follow the customs of society.
    • Because Paul chooses to be alone, this has made him forget the fact that he has friends and family. This has made them lose all of their sympathy and respect for him.
  • Reconstructed: But no matter what they say, Paul ignores the criticism and proceeds enjoying his solitude. He might even honor his True Companions with a visit now and then / tell them they're welcome to visit him anytime in his lair of solitude.
