Basic Trope: A game mechanic for hurting/killing the player.
- Straight: Pressing X will kill your character.
- Exaggerated: If you press X, your save file is deleted... after making you watch a drawn-out and overtly grotesque cutscene of your character horribly dying.
- Downplayed: Pressing X will penalize, but not outright kill the player.
- Justified: The button is there for when you need to restart the level.
- Inverted: Press X to Not Die
- Subverted: A new path is created at the press of the alleged "DIE RIGHT NOW" button.
- Double Subverted: It's ultimately a case of Morton's Fork.
- Parodied: If you press X, your character dies and comes back wearing a zombie mask, yelling at you for causing him to suddenly die.
- Zig Zagged: Some actions can kill you while others must be done.
- Averted: No buttons can kill the player's character.
- Enforced: The developers want to make an easy way of resetting the level if you are stuck.
- Lampshaded: "Hmmm... dying off of one command seems pretty impractical."
- Invoked: Damn You, Muscle Memory!
- Exploited:
- The player presses X whenever he/she wants to undo his/her mistakes.
- The plot requires the player character to enter the underworld, so pressing X results in the character's death but continues the game as a spirit. May be a case of Fission Mailed if it isn't apparent at first.
- Defied: The player presses X, but the character refuses to die.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
