Basic Trope: Pills or other alternative which take the standard role of food.

  • Straight: Food Pills are a small package that gives you the whole nutritional benefit of an actual meal.
  • Exaggerated: Food Nanomachines pretty much render eating pointless, being able to nutritionally satisfy you for months.
  • Downplayed:
    • Meals are in a more condensed form, yet are unmistakably meals nonetheless.
    • Food Pills provide a small nutritional boost, yet one alone cannot replace food.
  • Justified:
    • They exist for quick consumption, like an army mid-battle who can't spend time eating a proper meal.
    • Food Pills were created as proof of scientific advancement and new emergent technologies.
    • Food Pills are merely the dehydrated form, needing to add water to get the proper meal.
    • The Food Pills are primarily about temporary enhancement, with them being made proper Food Pills for easy intake.
    • Space and mass limitations are a major concern for spaceflight - the more mass that can be conserved for necessities like food, the more that it can be diverted to carrying other things.
    • Food Pills were created to help people gain access to nutrition, in places that are affected by drought, famine, barren soil, no soil (or hydroponic growth media) at all, etc.
  • Inverted: Typical medication is turned into certified food items.
  • Advertisement:
  • Subverted: One Day Meals initially seem like Food Pills, but in actuality are more like vitamin pills.
  • Double Subverted: ...However they do provide the full daily recommendation for nutritional intake, leaving little actual need to eat proper food.
  • Parodied:
    • The Food 'Pill' is so tiny you need a magnifying glass to see it, and extremely precise tweezers to pick it up. But if you manage to put it in your mouth, ingesting the 'Pill' would instantly bloat your stomach.
    • Food pills defeat their own point by requiring so many of them. Just one meal requires a popcorn bowl filled to the brim with them.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: One simply cannot compress a nutritional meal into a small pill.
  • Enforced: "We need to make it clear the characters do need to eat, but we can't waste resources showing actual meals... Let's just say they use Food Pills!"
  • Advertisement:
  • Lampshaded: "Huh, for something that little that can substitute for a whole meal, it must require a really complex and huge operation to make."
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz only gives himself and his employees Food Pills, preferring them over more easily poisoned normal foods.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: Food Pills are blatantly refused, given they're nothing like a real meal and people have fun eating.
  • Discussed: "Huh, I just realized... Given all the fancy compressing going on and the culinary advances, Food Pills do seem like a logical development." "Well you would need to get the right smell to go alongside the taste for anyone to actually like it, plus somehow getting the body to stop being hungry. Though once you do all that, only human pettiness would prevent someone from using Food Pills."
  • Conversed: "Seriously, Food Pills? Don't people realize that's such a horribly stupid Trope?" "You clearly misunderstand the possibilities then, as all Tropes Are Tools you know. The very least Food Pills would be a highly pragmatic choice, and actually an excellent weapon if each equates a whole meal."
  • Implied: Trope Co., known to condense and package many things, is seen bringing in food nobody seems to eat.
  • Deconstructed: Fully condensing a whole meal into a pill, even if tasteful and with the right smell, doesn't actually take up much space in your stomach- Thus not combating the sensation of hunger at all. Add in the fact taking more pills or food would end up surpassing the proper intake for a meal, means you can't take pills and be satisfied without essentially overeating.
  • Reconstructed: Whilst condensing a whole meal into a pill wouldn't combat hunger, adding in substances to suppress your hunger would be possible. Thus the only problem left is how to prevent food overdoses- Solvable by giving the pills edible technology that'll only break up the pill if it doesn't detect large qualities of nutrients already being consumed/processed.
  • Played For Laughs: Food Pills, much like actual pills, taste terrible and thus people act with revulsion when being presented a Food Pill.
  • Played For Drama: One pill being equal to a full meal, taking too many would thus flood your body with nutrients, wrecking all kinds of havoc on yourself.
