Go To

Basic Trope: An intergovernmental organization that acts like the United Nations, but isn't.

  • Straight: The International Union brokers peace between nations, handles humanitarian aid and makes sure the world stays in good shape.
  • Exaggerated: The International Union looks exactly, acts exactly and works exactly like the UN; the only difference is the name.
  • Downplayed: The International Union acts as an intergovernmental peacekeeping organization for some nations, not all like the real UN.
  • Justified:
    • The work is set hundreds of years in the future and the UN is long gone.
    • The work is set hundreds of years in the future and the UN has been absorbed into the Interplanetary Union.
    • The work is set in another universe, and the UN doesn't exist.
    • The International Union consists of nations that agreed to the necessity of the UN, but felt suppressed by its current regime. note
  • Inverted: The United Nations, right down to the logo, appears in a fictional world.
  • Subverted: The International Union may appear as a UN Expy at first, but later turns out to just be a trade union.
  • Double Subverted: However, that trade union gains considerably more power after a war and becomes a true fictional UN.
  • Parodied: An intergovernmental organization that acts like the League of Nations, but isn't
  • Averted:
    • There is no organization resembling the United Nations.
    • The work features the real United Nations.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need the United Nations in this story but it isn't set on Earth! Any suggestions?"
    • The United Nations blocked the author from letting the real thing appear, so they had to put in a substitute.
  • Lampshaded: "Hey, this International Union kinda reminds me of the UN - you know, that peacekeeping organization that existed hundreds of years ago?"
  • Invoked: A powerful politician creates the International Union in an attempt to broker peace between the world's superpowers.
  • Exploited: A Corrupt Politician takes a seat in the International Union and manipulates politics for money.
  • Defied: But another powerful politician does not want it, believing it to just become a Not So Omniscient Councilof Bickering.
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed: "Yeah, Bob, Alice's book is basically describing the UN but in space."
  • Implied: A soldier in a science-fiction universe says he can't shoot the POW because that 'stupid international peacekeeping organization' calls it a war crime, and then exclaims it was much better when the UN was still around.
  • Deconstructed: The International Union gets created after the United Nations failed, but like the United Nations the International Union fails as well because it couldn't handle the problems the UN had faced.
  • Reconstructed: But the International League is created after the IUN fails, and manages to handle the problems the IUN and UN faced.
  • Plotted A Good Waste: The International Union Peacekeeping Forces appear, only to get absolutely demolished by The Empire in the span of 30 seconds
  • Played For Laughs: The International Union's meetings often get chaotic and physically violent in a comedic fashion.
  • Played For Drama: The International Union is powerless to stop The Empire as its member states get annexed one by one.
