Basic Trope: A character doesn't like their birth name for personal reasons.

  • Straight: Robert hates his name, and prefers to be called "Bob."
  • Exaggerated: Bob will attempt to murder anyone who uses his birth name.
  • Downplayed: Bob is somewhat embarrassed when someone uses his real name, but doesn't correct the speaker.
  • Justified:
    • The name "Robert" embarrasses Bob.
    • Bob's Abusive Parents (or some else who mistreated him in the past) always called him by Robert. Therefore, he cannot help but associate the name with something highly unpleasant.
    • Alice is transgender and gets upset when someone calls her "Robert" because she changed her name to reflect her gender identity.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob is perfectly okay with people using his real name.
    • Alternatively, Robert hates being called "Bob".
  • Subverted: Bob does not like being called "Robert" by someone who hasn't earned the right; close friends can and do call him that regularly.
  • Double Subverted: As Subverted, but it grates on him even among his friends, who soon figure this out and drop it.
  • Parodied: When someone uses Bob's real name, he nukes the speaker, sets the speaker on fire, runs the speaker over, and kicks him.
  • Zig Zagged: Bob is fine being called his real name by certain people (e.g. his significant other or sibling), but hates being called his real name by other people.
  • Averted: Bob is fine being called his real name.
  • Enforced: "Let's create a character with a name that can be shortened some way, and they insist on being called by their shortened name."
  • Lampshaded: "Has anyone noticed that every time that someone calls Bob by his real name, he gets really mad?"
  • Invoked: Danny tells Bob the actual meaning of his real name to anger him.
  • Exploited:
    • Alice tricks Claire into calling Bob by his real name.
    • Alice deduces a shapeshifter is impersonating Bob when they don't complain when she calls them "Robert".
  • Defied: Bob calms himself down when someone calls him by his real name.
  • Discussed: "I wonder if Bob gets angry when I call him by his real name..."
  • Conversed: "This is too easy. Bob will get mad if you call him by his real name."
  • Implied: Claire and Alice talk over lunch about Bob, who is only referred to as such, and Claire corrects herself when she starts to say "Robert".

Back to Do Not Call Me "Paul", but DON'T call it the main page. It will get very mad when you do so.
