Basic Trope: Simply turning sixteen puts the character into grave danger.

  • Straight: On Alice's sixteenth birthday, a Kaiju attacks her hometown, causing her Magical Girl powers to awaken.
  • Exaggerated: Alice's sixteenth birthday is the date of The End of the World as We Know It, as she disappears on that date — along with everyone else sixteen or older!
  • Downplayed: Alice gets a stomach bug on her sixteenth birthday party.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Bad things have happened on every single one of Alice's previous birthdays—but her sixteenth is perfectly calm.
  • Subverted: Turns out the Kaiju was just a prank by her friends.
  • Double Subverted: Well, it was until it somehow gained its own life.
  • Parodied: Alice is a Cosplay Otaku Girl, and her Birthday Episode consists largely of her playing out increasingly wacky disaster scenarios in her head.
  • Zig Zagged: Even though Alice's sixteenth birthday sucked, there was an equal amount of good to it.
  • Averted: Nothing catastrophic happens on Alice's sixteenth birthday—or on any of her birthdays, for that matter.
  • Enforced: The author had a horrible sixteenth birthday, and feels like making Alice go through the same horrors.
  • Lampshaded: "Well, of course a calm sixteenth birthday was too much to ask!"
  • Invoked: The villain sicks the Kaiju on the city as a twisted birthday present.
  • Exploited: The Government knows about Alice's special destiny and puts the Kaiju Defense Force on full alert on her sixteenth birthday.
  • Defied: Alice drinks a potion to become The Ageless at 11:59 and never become sixteen.
  • Discussed: "11:58... 11:59... 12:00! Alice is sixteen! The world is over!"
  • Conversed: "So anyways, why is being 16 a particularly popular trope for protagonists?"
  • Implied: Alice is an orphan and her exact birthday is unknown, but Kaijus do attack her hometown in her late teens.
  • Deconstructed: The Government begins to take children away from their families on their sixteenth birthday, quarantining them off "for public safety".
  • Reconstructed: The "quarantine" turns into be a year-round free amusement park for the kids and makes Kaiju attacks manageable.
  • Played For Laughs: Convinced that bad things will happen on her birthday, Alice's Crazy Survivalist antics amuse her friends all day.
  • Played For Drama: Alice's beloved grandma falls sick just before her birthday, and dies in the hospital as she is reluctantly hanging out with her friends.
