Playing With / Boss in Mook Clothing

Go To

Basic Trope: An uncommon "normal" mook with traits that a boss would have.

  • Straight: Golluxes are uncommon enemies with stats high enough for a mid-game boss. They absorb damage like sponges, they have a wide variety of damaging attacks, and are able to heal.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Golluxes are the first mook the player encounters, but are heinously powerful to the point of being stronger than the game's Superboss.
    • Golluxes are just as strong as the bosses, but are almost indistinguishable from the standard Mook.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified: The Genre Savvy Evil Overlord decided it would be a good idea to disguise his most powerful troops as weaker ones to throw the heroes off.
  • Inverted: Fake Ultimate Mook
  • Subverted: Golluxes start off absurdly powerful, but once the player destroys their arms, they become jokes.
  • Double Subverted: After which they reveal their true, ultra-powerful forms.
  • Parodied:
    • Even the harmless NPCs can one-shot you. Somehow.
    • When the final boss is defeated, it taps into a more powerful form. It transforms into none other than a giant Gollux.
  • Enforced:
    • The game was never meant to be easy, and the appearance of Golluxes is meant to signal the beginning of the big Difficulty Spike.
    • The developers used the Golluxes as a Beef Gate to keep players from entering a certain area too early.
    • The game has Mooks, but no Bosses, but needs this trope as a close equivalent to proper Boss Battles.
  • Lampshaded:
    • "What the hell? Why aren't my attacks doing more damage? It's just a mook, for God's sake!"
    • "This is far below my skill level; I deserve a promotion after this."
  • Invoked: The Evil Overlord pours most of his resources into training Golluxes in an attempt to get the heroes to give up.
  • Exploited: Players create ROM hacks of the game and rewrite the final boss's coding to act like a stronger Gollux, because Golluxes are stronger than the boss and they feel that such a fight would be a better final challenge.
  • Defied: Players seek out the Infinity +1 Sword designed specifically to kill Golluxes, making them a joke.
  • Discussed: "I barely escaped those things with my life. If you ever encounter a Gollux, be careful."
  • Conversed: "Good God! I friggin' hate Golluxes!"

Let's head back to the main page right after I take out this one guy...oh damn he's tough! Wait? He's the boss?"
