Nightmare Fuel / Warning Letter

Warning! All spoilers for the story will be unmarked. Proceed at your own peril.

Death Note has been known for its downright creepy moments, from Light's Slasher Smile to the unsettling moments in which he kills hundreds of thousands of people on a daily basis, all with a smile on his face. Persona 5 was no slouch either, with its villains and locations and even the targets the Phantom Thieves were tasked with taking down. Naturally, when you bring the two together, things are bound to be unsettling...

  • You remember how Light described the world as rotting? Then it should come as no surprise that his Palace is one giant Crapsack World. Buildings are wrecked beyond repair, angels patrol the sky, and the only people the Phantom Thieves ever encounter are the mindless worshipers of Kira, all wearing white robes and holding nothing but candles.
    • Even worse, Light's Palace can easily bring to mind the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games, particularly the Law Routes. The Phantom Thieves should be grateful his Shadow didn't turn into YHVH...
  • Light's reaction to the Phantom Thieves is...not pleasant. He doesn't take the idea of other people preaching justice other than himself very well, and vows to eliminate them.
  • The end of chapter 2 reveals that the Phantom Thieves are cutting it dangerously close. If they fail, Raye Penber dies tomorrow and the events of Death Note continue without delay.
  • When we see Shadow Light/Kira for the first time...the meeting is just downright unsettling. The Phantom Thieves even outright asks what made him think he was so different than the people he killed. His response? He's Japan's number one Honor Student. To him, the criminals he killed were scum that needed to be wiped away to make the world a better place. And he doesn't even consider himself to be on their level, completely unaware of the atrocities he has committed, and will commit if the Phantom Thieves don't stop him.
  • Shadow Light's demon form, Demiurge, is just so downright terrifying to look at, it isn't even funny. He looks like a demon playing a god, dressed in robes and has battered wings, has a sword stabbed through his skull, wears a blindfold and has the scales of justice in his hand. His skin's jet black and all veiny, and has More Teeth than the Osmond Family. A twisted, demented parody of the Lady Justice.
    • The fight itself is also terrifying, as Word of God says the fight is based around two bosses from Persona Q. The first phase of the fight is based off the Merciful Clergyman, a Barrier Change Boss who initiated "vows" that hefted a penalty for anyone who broke the rules. If the Phantom Thieves broke a Sacred Law, they'd get a serious hit that would lower their fighting capability and cripple them. Worse, had Morgana not cut the scales, the source behind the barrier change gimmick, Demiurge would have enacted a Sacred Law that would have prevented the Phantom Thieves from doing ANYTHING. From summoning their Personas to aiming their guns at him to using their items.
    • After he's been reduced to kneeling on the ground, and undergoing a Villainous Breakdown and Villainous BSoD, Demiurge enacts a second phase, based on PQ's Final Boss: the death clock mechanic. It's very creepy, and a clear reflection of Light's powers with the Death Note. The Phantom Thieves were lucky to defeat them as quickly as they did, otherwise things would have ended very badly.
    • The recommended music for the fight is "Rivers in the Desert" rather than "Blooming Villain". The Fridge page has already noted how this makes sense, but it also highlights just how severe of a threat Kira is, given that it's the same music used on the Final Bosses from the game.
  • The Phantom Thieves Mementos Target shortly after they change Light's heart is a prosecutor named Kamiyama Takanashi. He serves as a Foil to Sae Niijima in some ways as she is portrayed later in the game, as both use falsified evidence to further their goals. However, whereas Sae only pondered on using the idea, as she would be pressured by her superiors, Takanashi does it daily. Worse, when the thieves target him, he was in the middle of pushing for the death penalty for his current case.
  • On Soichiro's part. When the Kira killings suddenly cease, Soichiro discovers that Light has been acting very odd. He's suffering from nightmares, he can barely study in class, and according to the former, Light has "the same eyes as the men he has arrested." Since Light's behavior coincides with Kira's activties stopping, and the fact that the Phantom Thieves initiate a change of heart, coupled with L's blunt with his investigation, he realizes that his own son may be the worst serial killer to ever appear in modern history.
  • The Niijima Family in general. In game, all we ever learn about their father was that he died in pursuit of justice and met his end in a drunk driving incident. In this story, that was a lie Soichiro told to the Niijima family: Masahiro Niijima was his partner and was investigating the Kaneshiro case. When Soichiro was at home with his wife, taking care of a sick Light, Masahiro was ambushed and shot in the back several times, most likely by Kaneshiro's goons. Having blamed himself for the death of his partner, Soichiro lied to the young girls in the hopes that they wouldn't go after Kaneshiro in revenge.
    • Near the end of the The Sinner of Greed (Part 3), we reveal that Sae did end up finding out about the lie, no doubt because of her job as a prosecutor. And according to Makoto, Sae and Soichiro have a strained relationship. Makoto currently has no idea about the lie, but Light does. And he has no idea if he should tell Makoto or not.
  • Kira's cultists are getting more active, and Akechi may be using them as pawns.
