  • Nana's scratching at the walls and laughing at nothing, Pop Pop is messing with his gun and there's something weird in the shed, and Mom's far away and doesn't believe you when you say something's wrong. And those aren't your grandparents.
  • Becca being asked by Nana to clean the oven is incredibly unnerving, especially given how the grandmother becomes somewhat detached and insists that Becca put her entire body in to clean it properly. The second time is even worse, since the children now know that their "grandparents" are impostors and this time, Nana shuts the door while Becca's inside to wipe off the door. The oven door, incidentally, is what has the knobs to turn it on. It's understandable why Tyler tries to have her let him do it instead.
  • The "hide and seek" game Nana "plays" with the kids under the huge porch. She appears out of nowhere, crawling very fast and saying with a creepy face, "I'm gonna getcha!"
  • Much of what Nana does at night, particularly - like with the hide and seek - suddenly crawling at top speed right towards the kids' door.
  • "Those aren't your grandparents."
  • Unlike other M. Night films that always delve on supernatural horrors, this one is entirely based on human madness, literally people losing their sanity. From that grounded perspective alone, the movie becomes a lot scarier.
  • Becca and Tyler coming across Stacey's body hanging from a tree.
  • Keep in mind that Becca and Tyler were originally told not to go into the basement because of mold. As it turns out, it's because the imposters were keeping the decomposing bodies of their real grandparents down there.
    • Just the entire concept. You go to your grandparents' house for the first time and you haven't got the slightest clue as to what they look like or what they're like. After days of increasingly unnerving events and actions by both of them - including murdering a woman and hanging her corpse in their yard - you learn that not only are those NOT your grandparents, but they murdered and hid the decomposing bodies of your real grandparents in a freezing cold basement. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Tyler, Becca, and Loretta will all need a boatload of therapy.
