Nightmare Fuel / Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

• The scary forest noises in the dark while the pets are trying to sleep, especially the truly horrific howls at the end of the scene.
  • Chance's pan view of the forest looks like something out of a Slasher Movie.
    "This place is spooky. I don't like it here. It gives me the creeps."
  • Shadow's description of a moose to Chance and Sassy: "A big, razor-toothed animal that comes out at night to eat the tails off smaller animals." Sure, he was just teasing them, but still...
• The bear that Chance encounters after he scares off the cubs who were trying to take his fish; he wisely runs off as soon as he sees it.
• Sassy falling into a river and plunging over a waterfall. After Shadow and Chance fail to rescue her, they both assume that she didn't even make it.
• The mountain lion which chases Chance and Shadow, accompanied by a creepy theme.
• The scene of the animal rescue people removing the porcupine needles from Chance's face, without painkillers, while he screams for mercy. Even though adults clearly knew they are helping them, it seemed absolutely terrifying to kids watching them seemingly torture him. It makes no sense why they didn't numb Chance up for something like that, if not outright sedate him... besides the obvious plot-related reasons, of course. Kirkwood’s innocent smile can’t have made it much easier.
  Chance: OW! Oh, please stop, please stop! Oh, just let me die!
  Shadow: They're killing him, Sassy!
  Sassy: (gulp)
  • Not to mention the Fridge Horror about Chance begging not to be taken to the back room, as he'd probably seen other pets euthanized in his previous trips to the pound.
    • This is confirmed; Chance says that dogs taken to the back room never come out.
• Shadow's fall into the pit near the end; it's accompanied by a sudden Jump Scare as he falls and viewers likely felt the animals were out of jeopardy after just dodging a train, but just seeing him at the bottom of the trench, dowsed in mud and looking utterly broken is terrifying as it is heartbreaking - especially when he gives up trying to get out.
