Sasaki, a middle-aged Japanese salaryman buys a pet bird one day, little knowing it would change his life forever. This bird, Peeps, turns out to be a reincarnation of a "Starsage", a powerful wizard from another world, and he gives Sasaki the ability to use magic and transport to his world and back. The two build an interdimensional trading business by selling goods from Sasaki's world in Peeps's less-advanced medieval fantasy world. Then, back in Sasaki's world, Sasaki suddenly finds himself conscripted into a secret government bureau that polices psychics. And that's just the beginning. All Sasaki wants is a peaceful, relaxing life, but he keeps getting dragged into one weird plot after another.
Sasaki and Peeps is a Light Novel series written by Buncololi and illustrated by Kantoku. As of January 2024, eight volumes have been released. A manga adaptation illustrated by Pureji Osho has been serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace Plus online magazine since January 2021. An anime adaptation produced by SILVER LINK. began airing in January 2024.
Sasaki and Peeps provides examples of:
- Don't Try This at Home: Played for Laughs, when Sasaki and Peeps eat dinner, a caption appears cautioning the viewer not to feed meat to Java sparrows that are not reincarnations of Starsages.
- Fantasy Kitchen Sink: Even though Sasaki's world seems to be ordinary modern-day Japan, it soon turns out there are psychics, Magical Girls, angels, demons, giant sea monsters, and aliens.
- Foreshadowing: Otonari makes a comment on how young Hoshizaki is. Hoshizaki reveals to Sasaki that she's actually 16.
- Giving Radio to the Romans: No time travel involved, but Sasaki and Peeps start selling goods from Sasaki's modern-day world in Peeps's generic medieval fantasy isekai world.
- Kudzu Plot: The series follows several different plotlines all going on simultaneously, some in Sasaki's world, some in Peeps's world.
- Magical Girl: Some of these exist in Sasaki's world. The first one he meets is by no means a heroine.
- Phony Psychic: Sasaki gets mistaken for a cryokinetic psychic by Hoshizaki after using ice magic in front of her. He's going along with it.
