Heartwarming / Sansûkh

Go To

  • Fíli finally relenting and calling Frerin "Uncle". "Little uncle", to be precise, but still.
  • Thorin's reunion with his family.
  • Merry's and Éowyn's conversation about the Shire.
  • Dís meeting her family after her death.
Frís: Your eyes will work soon enough, my daughter, and when they do, you'll be able to see how proud I am of you.
  • As in canon, Galadriel's interaction with Gimli in Lothlorien. Her words are made slightly more significant than in the book because the readers know the history of Erebor and Smaug and the history of gold-sickness in the line of Durin. The shock of all the observing dead dwarves is both gratifying and a little heartbreaking, with the general vibe being, "she understands". It also acts as a major turning point in Thorin's attitude to Elves, as he acknowledges that she offered Gimli welcome in a land of strangers, comforted him, rebuked her own lord in public for his sake, and gave him three strands of her hair when one had famously been denied to Fëanor.
  • Legolas calling Gimli mellon nin (my friend) through the fic. And later meleth nin (my love).
  • That Bilbo is still friends with The Company a good eighty years later. When the messenger from Mordor comes asking about him at Erebor, there is absolutely no question of them taking his offer.
    • Nori's response when Thorin informs the dead Dwarves in the Halls of Mahal:
Nori: Bilbo! What does the Enemy want wif our Hobbit?
  • Narvi crying Tears of Joy when Barad-dûr is destroyed.
    • And then her and Celebrimbor finally reuniting. Celebrimbor reveals he has been trying to find her for literal Ages.
  • Fíli's and Frerin's conversation in chapter 27 reveals that Fíli also remembers Tauriel saving Kíli's life in Lake-Town.
  • Bilbo making Thorin smile at the end of the same chapter.
  • Laindawar, Jeri, Legolas, and Gimli in chapter 49, especially when Legolas and Laindawar perform a Headbutt of Love, an explicitly Dwarven gesture of affection. Shows how close they've all gotten.
  • Pretty much all of chapter 50. One wouldn't think so many people dying would be a cause for joy.
    • After eighty years, Bilbo and Thorin are finally reunited in the Halls of Waiting.
    • Tauriel's reunion with Kíli.
    • Dori's death and reunion with his brothers.
    • Bofur's death and reunion with Bombur and Bifur.
    • And then finally the last of the company, Dwalin, who made it to the age of 340, reuniting with Balin, Orla, his parents, and the rest of The Company.
  • Thorin's answer when Kíli asks how Glóin of all Dwarrow ended up with renowned beauty Mizim.
Thorin: He was kind, honest, and respectful, and he made her laugh.
  • For all their bickering, when Gimli says he's going to visit the grieving Dís, Gimrís immediately understands why and offers to come too.
  • The Company all saying goodbye to Bilbo when he leaves to go back to the Shire after Thorin's death and thanking him for his help. Bofur in particular gives Bilbo his hat for the journey back. Many decades later, when Bofur dies, Bilbo returns the gesture in the Halls of Mahal by presenting him with a new one.
  • Bofur, Glóin, and Bombur visiting Bag End on their way back to their families from Erebor and giving Bilbo a group hug.
  • By the time of the Paths of the Dead, Thorin has sufficiently thawed out towards Legolas that the two exchange cordial formal greetings, and Thorin actually acts as a Shipper on Deck by bringing up the oath Legolas gave at Helm's Deep in order to wangle a Love Confession.
  • Later on, via the medium of Gimli, Thorin speaks to Aragorn as one King to another, telling him not to fear his ancestry and any weakness in his blood, but to simply rule as Aragorn, since Aragorn is enough. Aragorn is quite clearly deeply touched and rather grateful for this advice.
  • Elladan and Elrohir are pretty much unfazed by Legolas's and Gimli's relationship, which Legolas is wary of, because the Sindar are the poor country cousins as far as Elf clans go, and those two are descended from literally every Elven royal family bar Legolas's own. Indeed, they point out, backhandedly and somewhat wryly, that something everyone forgets is that because they are Peredhel, Half-Elves, they are descended from an Interspecies Romance (several, in fact) not unlike Legolas's and Gimli's. Additionally, they state that while their father will certainly be surprised, Legolas and Gimli will be welcome in Rivendell.
    • Likewise, while Elrond is a bit startled, he thaws out quickly, and even Celeborn - who, formerly of Doriath, which was sacked by Firebeard Dwarves from whom Gimli is partially descended, actually has reason for Fantastic Racism - adjusts and offers his own congratulations. Galadriel is pleased for them, and Glorfindel, newly arrived, blithely offers his congratulations, tells Elrond to stop being a prig, and goes looking for another ale.
  • Legolas's and Gimli's wedding, naturally, particularly the song Gimli composes - which is so lovely and heartfelt that it successfully changes the mind of both of their fathers regarding the match.
  • Thorin's slowly growing fondness for Legolas, which became genuine affection over the course of Legolas and Gimli's marriage, to the point where he worries about him after Gimli's death, walks every step of the way with him over Taniquetil, and ropes in every available aid to help guide him along the way. As he says, a little awkwardly, it was not just for Gimli's sake (even if he is a little startled when Legolas hugs him).
