Funny / The Harder They Fall (2021)

  • An unintentional example but seeing Nat hit Scorpion in mid-air twice in the present-day opening scene as the action freezes for the title card is pretty hilarious.
  • Beckwourth's introduction as he confronts the Grimes Brothers of the Crimson Hood gang. Clyde, one of the brothers, holds a serious grudge over an incident where Beckwourth took his eye (not helped by the fact that their mother still holds a soft spot for him). Clyde and Jim immediately start slinging insults at each other eventually ending with this.
    (Beckwourth promptly shoots him).
  • Pickett arguing with Beckwourth over the latter playing around in the Crimson Hood standoff. As they argue, Monroe, the last of the Crimson Hood gang, tries to go for a gun. Beckwourth shoots it out of his hand and Pickett reluctantly admits that was a pretty smooth move.
  • A cute (probably accidental) Shout-Out: after Cuffee deals with the two rude patrons, they order them to be taken to Doc Brown to be treated.
  • Nat meets with Mary who promptly slugs him for a past transgression then invites him upstairs for a little hanky panky. His expression is one of amused bewilderment.
    • Likewise Pickett interrupting them to tell Nat about their interrogation of Monroe. He wisely waves the hat in front of him before walking in, on the off chance Mary has a gun up thinking him a hostile (which she does along with Nat). Nat likewise chides him for his terrible timing.
  • Trudy kills the conductor after forcing him to stop a train, especially since he was about to insult her with an "N" word.
Cherokee Bill: You know he might could've said "Nincompoop."
    Trudy: We ain't no nincompoop.
  • Cherokee Bill warning the passengers not to do anything stupid as the Rufus gang board the train. He takes a moment to drink some bourbon off a passenger, cringes, and drops it.
  • His speech to the passenger that stands up to him. It seems he's familiar with this song and dance but was hoping to skip the routine this time.
Passenger: Get off this train now, you motherless scum!
Cherokee Bill: You must be the hero. (Resigned tone) Great spirit, why is there always one? You're rude. I might actually enjoy inflicting violence on you. But who knows, maybe you'll win. (Puts up his dukes) Let's see.
(The passenger does likewise and swings at him. Bill dodges, grabs a knife from Trudy, and cuts the man's legs)
  • The gang comes across the kid soldier in the second car. After convincing him to drop his rifle, Trudy asks how many soldiers are in the next car.
Solider: Thirty (Bill cocks his gun at him) TEN!
  • Bill trying to get the Lieutenant General to open the door or they'll kill the young soldier (who just happens to be his son). When the Lieutenant General fails to comply, even after his son was shot once, Trudy shoots the kid in the leg, to the slight annoyance of Bill.
Bill: Goddamn Trudy, c'mon you know I like my countdowns. (To the Lieutenant General) My apologies sir, my friend here doesn't like arithmetic.
  • On his way to Wiley's office, Rufus talks with one of the town's kids and shows him a magic trick he covers an orange in his hat, when it pulls it up..it's still there. Cute subversion.
  • When we first meet Wiley he's eating a steak, threatening Rufus to leave his town or else. However, in the middle of his speech, some men interrupt him and we pull out to see that he's talking with no one and was rehearsing how he figured the conversation would go.
  • Brutal as the scene is of Rufus pistol-whipping Wiley on the ground, him allowing a kid to collect the gold teeth Rufus knocked out of his mouth is pretty funny.
  • During the initial confrontation at Redwood, Beckwourth tries to introduce himself to Cherokee Bill in a grandiose fashion expecting it to be an epic showdown. Bill... just waves the kid off, as he's seemingly met many people like him before. Sheriff Bass has to drag Beckwourth away as he's complaining about having rehearsed the speech and everything.
  • Nat's plan for the bank robbery involves having Cuffee go in a dress. Naturally, Cuffee isn't keen on the idea, not helped by Beckwourth's joking. Though he shuts up when he gets a Disapproving Look from the others.
  • The town Nat wants to rob, Maysfield, is a figurative and literal white town with no citizens of color whatsoever. And if you didn't think the movie drove this home enough...
Caption: Maysfield (It's a white town).
  • Likewise Cuffee struggles to walk in the dress when they approach the bank. Even Nat is a little amused by this but knows well enough not to joke at Cuffee for it. Once the two get inside, Cuffee approaches the teller and asks for a withdrawal. The teller, being a white woman, laughs at them. So Cuffee goes for their gun ...and has a bit of trouble finding it in the dress flaps at first.
  • Nat enjoying himself a lot more than he should during said robbery. Granted he's being forced to do this, but at the least he figures he should get some amusement out of it.
Nat: (As he's holding up some of the bank patrons) Times have changed, ain't they?
  • The climax starts with Bass riding a wagon into Redwood, apparently with some of the money. Angel comes over and insults Bass about his body count, citing he'd be willing to bet his right arm over having a higher one. Bass advises him not to take that bet. When Bill comes out to meet him, Bass requests they talk away from the carriage. Once Bass and Bill are far enough away, Pickett (having knocked out one of the gunners on the roof) shoots the carriage, which is full of dynamite, blowing up Angel along with it. One of his arms lands right beside Bass and Bill, though Bass is a bit curious which arm it is.
Bass: That the right arm or the left?
  • When Nat gets shot in the shoulder, Bass saves him from one of the Crimson Hoods and drags him out of the line of fire. With both pinned down, Nat decides now's a good time for a cigar and asks Bass for some matches.
Bass: What? You wanna smoke now?
    Nat: (Annoyed) Matches, Bass.
  • This is followed by Wiley blowing up some of Rufus's men with dynamite inside the mayor's offer, much to their surprise when they hear the explosion outside.
Nat: (Beat, he spits out the cigar) Fuck it.
(Bass likewise throws aside the matches)
