    • The storyline between Nodoka and Daruizen can be seen as a metaphor for abusive relationships and healing from them: Daruizen took great glee in harming a lot of things that were dear to Nodoka (her body, home and friends), all the while telling her that it’s her fault that he’s doing it since she was the one that hosted him and can’t stop him from causing damage. As such, Nodoka is left unconfident, feeling responsible for Daruizen’s actions and frantically overworking herself to make up for them, often to her detriment. Over the course of the series, her loved ones are able to help her build up her self worth and make her realize that Daruizen’s actions are not on her and she doesn’t need to punish herself for them, leaving her feeling more happier and confident. When things come to a head with King Byo-gen deciding to absorb Daruizen, his response was to plead, and then gaslight and force Nodoka into letting him hide in her body, all the while showing he has no intention of changing for the better and he doesn’t care about what would happen to her if she agrees, showing that he only sees her as his property. And while shaken by his gaslighting at first, Nodoka’s friends help her overcome this and she firmly rejects him, telling him that her life and body belong to her, not him. In the end, Nodoka is able to heal from Daruizen’s abuse and she tells him where to shove it rather then letting him control her again, leaving him to his fate.
