Stairway to Paradise is a story written by RainFlame. It's about Roy Mustang trying to take care of a blind and traumatized Edward.

It's posted on both Deviant Art and Fanfiction.net. On the former, it's only posted up to chapter 40. It's completed on the latter, though.

Tropes used in Stairway to Paradise:

  • Big Brother Instinct: Goes for both the boys. Edward tries his best to hide his weakness from Alphonse, and Alphonse goes to Xing to find a way to fix Edward's eyesight.

  • Blind Musician: Silas orders a piano for Edward, which he quickly gets the hang of.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Silas. He's a medical professional, but he's less of a doctor and more of a friend to Roy and Edward. And he ordered a piano for Edward in chapter 25, much to Roy's shock.

  • Combat Medic: In chapter 37, Dr. Silas beats up an armed soldier with a bedpan and then threatens to shave off his mustache while he's out. "I am a holding a gun and a bedpan. It's been a long day, so I will only make this offer once. We're on a rescue mission to find a child that's lost out in the middle of this storm, and if you help us, there will be heaps of glory in it for you, and if you don't, I will hit you with this bedpan and shave your mustache off while you're unconscious. Which will it be? Heaps of glory, or naked lips? Of course, nothing wrong with naked lips. My lips are naked, but I don't think you want your lips naked, so which one?"

  • Eye Scream: The Drachmans blinded Edward by pouring acid in his eyes. Yikes!

  • Idiot Ball: Roy, assuming he'll only be gone a couple hours, leaves a sleeping Edward alone in Silas's house, a place that's unfamiliar to him. It doesn't go well, to say the least...

  • Happily Adopted: Roy adopts the brothers at the end of the story.

  • Papa Wolf: Roy is very protective of Edward.

  • Parental Substitute: Roy taking Edward under his wing because pretty much every other alternative would end with Edward forgotten in an orphanage or an institution. It's stated right in the summary: With the State honorably discharging him, and no father to speak of, Roy has no choice but to care for the boy and try to put the pieces back together.

  • Torture Is Ineffective: No matter what the Drachmans did to him, Edward didn't say diddly. Not that he knew jack about Operation Firefight anyway...
