Fanfic / A Bit Of Luck And A Hospital Visit

Go To

After how many timeloops Homura has been through, she knows just about what to expect. She'll wake up in the hospital bed, completely alone, and will remain alone until she transfers into school a few days later.

What she didn't expect was to see her friends all waiting by her hospital bed. And she certainly didn't expect Sayaka to kiss her.

A Bit of Luck and a Hospital Visit is a Puella Magi Madoka Magica fanfic by Orajje where Homura ends up in a timeline where she is in a relationship with her fellow magical girls. Follow her as she tries to adjust to this new reality, and her friends as they try to get their girlfriend to trust them again, and maybe learn what happened to her in all those previous timelines.

The fic can be read here on Archive of Our Own by registered users.

A Bit of Luck and some Tropes

  • Adaptational Expansion: In the original anime, Homura's apartment being an empty white void with floating pictures and a giant pendulum is one of many cases of Rule of Symbolism that make little sense when you think about it too much. The fic explains that it's a holographic computers working similarily to a holodeck.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • The entire premise of the fic is that Homura ends up in a timeline where she is in a polyamorous relationship with the holy quintet.
    • With Momo still alive and needing Mami's help in caring for her, Kyoko was not able to fall into as bad of a place as she did in canon and is forced to be more responsible and less belligerent, coming off more as Mami's gruffer counterpart than a Dark Magical Girl rival to her. Kyoko's also filled in a Homura-like role early on of distrusting Kyubey that she typically doesn't fulfill in the backstory, bouncing off Mami's trust in the alien.
  • Big Damn Kiss: In the very first chapter, no less. The moment where the story goes well and truly off the rails from the typical course of events is when Sayaka walks up to Homura's hospital bed and kisses her on the lips. Homura is too confused and flustered to process what's happening.
  • Death of Personality: To the rest of the holy quintet, it feels like Homura suffered this at times. One day she's their insecure, nervous, easily flustered girlfriend, the next she's a traumatized veteran who sees them as friends at best.
  • Girls Have Cooties: Momo might be a girl, but she's convinced her sister's girlfriends have them.
  • Holographic Terminal: Homura has a holographic computer so advanced that the projector alone is as big as an average rig. When turned on, it turns the entire room into a white void with floating pictures and a giant pendulum.
  • I Hate Past Me: Kyouko is furious at herself from previous timelines for not having cared for Homura and let her become the traumatized wreck she is today.
  • Irony: In the original show and the Rebellion movie, Homura and Sayaka never have a good relationship, ranging from mere rivalry and suspicion, to outright hostility. In this fic, the first thing Sayaka does is kissing Homura on the lips.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Sayaka and Madoka were not aware of the existence of Magical Girls until Homura transforms and (apparently) teleports right in front of them, since Kyouko and Mami didn't want to draw them into the horrors of that life. Kyouko ends up having to give them the rundown on their way to Homura's apartment.
  • Love Triangle: Downplayed since they're technically all in a relationship and all love her deeply, but Kyouko and Sayaka notice that Homura is a bit more comfortable receiving affection from Madoka than from them or Mami, and can't help but feel a bit jealous.
  • Point of Divergence: Two major changes made this timeline different from the others.
    • Kyouko having been in Mitakihara and killed a witch at the hospital, noticed that one of the patients had potential as a magical girl, and ended up talking to the girl in question, who was just happy to have a visitor. Over time, Kyouko would befriend the rest of the holy quintet, introduce them to Homura, and the rest is history.
    • In addition the survival of Momo means that Kyouko needed Mami's help and couldn't avoid her, requiring her to stay with Mami for Momo's benefit. Mami's continued influence, and Momo's needs, meant that Kyouko could never fall into the same pits that she did in canon.
  • Polyamory: The Holy Quintet are all figuring out their relationship, but it is definitely some flavor of romantic.
  • Spared By Adaptation: Momo Sakura is still alive, having survived the events of Kyouko's past, albeit with serious burns.
  • Split-Personality Merge: Subtle, but there are hints that the Homura who was involved in the aforementioned relationship isn't erased by Homura coming into the timeline, just in the background, as Homura finds herself having thoughts of enjoying the other girls affections more than she expected.
  • Unbroken Vigil: When Homura wakes up after her timeloop (which starts just after she went through a heart surgery), she finds the rest of the holy quintet all waiting by her bedside.
