Disproportionate Retribution / GoAnimate

Go To

Across most videos:

  • This is the only form of retribution in the infamous "Gets Grounded" videos. Make one small slip-up and you'll find yourself grounded for an impossibly long time (usually well past the heat death of the universe). Sometimes, your parents will also go as far as to force cruel, unusual and/or humiliating punishments on you or outright assault you, and you can even get grounded for reasons far beyond your controlnote  or for no reason at all.
  • Worse, there have been videos made of users the uploader doesn't like being executed and their deaths being celebrated over petty things like, as noted below, making fake VHS openings.
  • You can get expelled from school just for getting a math problem wrong. (granted, most of the time the grounding victims come up with answers not even remotely close to the actual one, but still)
    • Many characters will also get expelled from school for getting an "F" in a single class.
    • Lighter videos seem to think that high school seniors can be sent back all the way to preschool and somehow fail that grade and be forced completely out of the education system.
  • In many "(character) Misbehaves At (restaurant)" videos, the troublemaker flips out and trashes the restaurant because the restaurant was out of one of the things they ordered. In other videos they freak out over the restaurant being closed.
  • As showcased in videos involving Warren Cook, making a fake VHS opening (meaning that it claims that the movie came out in a different year and was made by a different studio) is treated as some type of unforgivable sin in the GoAnimate universe. Just making one often leads Warren being grounded, jailed, or even executed. It is never truly been explained what exactly the problem is with him making something that appears to be so harmless.
  • There are videos where one character will litter a piece of garbage on the ground, only for someone else to walk up to it and instantly get arrested and sent to jail, usually without getting a chance to explain themselves.
  • It's occasionally inverted; characters will sometimes do terrible things like killing people, causing natural disasters, etc. All that happens to them is that they get grounded by their parents.
  • Some videos show characters going to the dentist, only to find out that they have cavities. Rather than logically treat the cavities, the dentist does absolutely nothing and ignores treatment, instead scheduling their next appointment, and the kids get grounded when they get home.
  • There are some videos which take place at an airport as the main family/characters prepare to leave for a vacation, and the troublemaker sets off the security booth with...a large water bottle. The security guard then angrily kicks them all out of the airport as though the entire family/cast had decided to cause a public disturbance in the airport instead of simply causing a minor and accidentalnote  inconvenience, rather simply telling them why this was a problem and sending them on their way once the problem was rectified; usually in real life this just results in the bottle being simply confiscated and everyone moving along (or the owner of the container just suddenly chugging the contents without being asked, as the TSA Instagram has shown multiple times, including one consuming an entire gallon of milk!). Food and drink purchased past the TSA checkpoint can also be taken on the plane (and water will be offered by the flight attendant if needed), so there is no reason for parents to be annoyed by their kid doing this. Additionally, the parents will immediately blame the troublemaker for ruining their vacation, even if they (implied or explicitly) were the ones who purchased the water bottle in the first place.

Specific examples:

  • In Bubbles Argues With Diesel Busters, it's mentioned that Diesel Busters beat up Blossom and Kirby for saying "thanks" instead of "thank you."
  • In this video (which only exists as part of a cringe compilation), a character is suspended from school and grounded for 390 weeks (7.5 years) for saying "Sheesh" in class.
  • Caillou Gets Grounded Because Of His Stupid Name has Caillou get grounded all because a lady thought that his name was stupid. This is despite the fact that the woman asked for his name and Caillou makes a point that his parents were the ones that chose to go with it note .
  • In Caillou's nightmare in "Caillou Scares Rosie Sleeping & Gets Grounded!", Barney eats Caillou (who tries to call to his parents for help) because he hears Caillou say that Rexy is his favorite dinosaur even more than Barney, and he thinks that Caillou doesn't love him anymore and instead loves Rexy more, which makes him upset.
  • In Classic Caillou Plays Cookie Run/Grounded, Classic Caillou hijacks a plane to South Korea and commits a mass workplace shooting... all because he failed the tutorial of a game the company made. An inversion of this trope also occurs at the end of the video, with Boris merely grounding him instead of turning him into the cops.
  • In the now-private video "Caillou & Friends Bully Trevor/Grounded", Caillou and his friends murder Trevor's parents and feed their remains to him in the form of chili (in a Shout-Out to South Park), all because Trevor told his parents that Caillou and his friends were bullying him.
  • In Caillou asks stupid questions/arrested, Caillou gets arrested and sent to jail just for asking random people stupid questions. At the end of the video, a police officer even threatens to change Caillou's misdemeanor into a felony if he didn't stop asking those questions (which is not seen in the reupload linked).
  • In Max Watches Porn/Arrested/Grounded, Max gets sent to jail for 3002008009 years for watching a pornographic video.
