  • Famous Ancestor: Longuet suspects that his family name might have helped him get some fence-sitters on board, as his great-grandfather was none other than Karl Marx himself.
  • Internal Reformist: After winning the 1963 election, Longuet has a unique opportunity to manage the transition to socialism without much of the bloodshed and destruction that are inevitable in a revolution.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portait_fra_georges_bidault_6.jpg
Role: Presidentnote
Party: Mouvement républicain socialnote
Ideology: National Conservatismnote

  • Enemy Mine: Bidault wants to court the United States, in order to get the Americans to back Europe against the Soviets and also because American investment and capital can help him considerably in repairing the French economy after Suez.
  • Evil Colonialist: Bidault believes that the colonial empire is France's soul, and is determined to keep its remaining colonies under the French boot.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Bidault is a hardline advocate of French imperialism, but he is also a seasoned diplomat and politician. Compared to fellow hardline imperialist Patrick Wall in the UK, Bidault is more willing to slowly transition to native rule, albeit with heavy French influence.
  • President Evil: Bidault is the biggest supporter of French colonialism who can be elected President of France.

Boris Souvarine

Party: Parti communiste françaisnote

  • Internal Reformist: Souvarine is a Eurocommunist who nominally still wants to realise Karl Marx's vision, albeit through reforms within the capitalist system.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: Souvarine, who becomes leader of the French Communist Party after Longuet loses the 1963 election, represents the PCF's turn away from Marxism-Leninism towards Eurocommunism—breaking with their former comrades in the Soviet bloc, selling out to the French national bourgeoisie and abandoning class struggle. Namely, while Longuet is personally friendly with Moscow but has to compromise with France's position in the ECO, Souvarine is no less hostile to the USSR than the average ECO leader is.
