Africa

    United Arab Republic
Official Name: United Arab Republic
Ruling Party: NUE
Ideology: Nasserismnote

  • Evil Reactionary: The Muslim Brotherhood is a group of Islamic scholars who resist Nasser's secular reforms and wish to turn Egypt back to a Muslim nation.

Gamal Abdel Nasser

Role: Presidentnote
Party: NUE
Ideology: Nasserismnote

  • Plot-Triggering Death: The assassination of Gamal Abdel Nasser under British orders during the Suez Crisis leads to the collapse of the Bretton Woods system and US-UK relations, and sets off the cold war between the ICA and the ECO (who were previously nominal allies).
  • Tempting Fate: The final sentence in Nasser's in-game bio is 'As long as he is alive, his great country will flourish.' His assassination is a truly unavoidable event that will always happen two months after game start.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Nasser's assassination is one of the very first events in the game, and kicks off the whole plot.

Official Name: Arab Republic of Cyrenaica, Emirate of Cyrenaica (Salem overthrown), Kingdom of Lybia (Monarchy, unification with Tripolitania)
Ruling Party: ADCC
Ideology: Revolutionary Frontnote

  • Puppet State: Since its independence, Cyrenaica has been dependent on Egyptian aid to keep public unrest at bay. As the Senussi resistance grew too strong, Egyptian Army officers were sent in to directly lead the government, making Cyrenaica even more obedient to Egypt.
  • The Remnant: Supporters of the royal family among the Bedouin tribes of southern Libya have continued to resist the Pan-Arabists since the latter ousted the Senussi Order.

Salah Salem

Role: Presidentnote
Party: ADCC

  • We Hardly Knew Ye: When Operation Musketeer starts, most Egyptian garrisons are recalled to fight in Sinai, which leads to Salem's government being overthrown by Senussi.

Hassan as-Senussi

    Central African Federation
Official Name: Central African Federation
Ruling Party: United Federal Party - M
Ideology: National Conservatismnote

  • Foreign Ruling Class: The Central African Federation is entirely ruled by a white elite that makes up around 3% of the population. Natives are disenfranchised and discriminated against just by pursuing politics alone.

Roy Welensky

Role: Prime Minister
Party: United Federal Party - M
Ideology: National Conservatismnote

    South Africa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flag_of_sa.png
Official Name: Union of South Africa
Ruling Party: National Union Party - M
Ideology: National Conservatismnote

Henry Allen Fagan

Role: Prime Minister
Party: National Union Party - M
Ideology: National Conservatismnote

  • Amoral Afrikaner: Downplayed somewhat. While Fagan was an ardent white supremacist in his youth, he has noted to become more liberal with age while his racist views has softened quite a bit, and during his time as Prime Minister of South Africa, he even has attempted to implement reforms that grant some degree of enfranchisment for the racial groups who have been oppressed under the Apartheid rule. It is, however, frequently suspected that these reforms are more down to Fagan playing at Realpolitik in a desperate attempt to keep South Africa from collapsing in on itself than anything else.
  • Neutrality Backlash: Fagan's careful attempts at racial enfranchisement reforms has been met with resistance from the more right-wing Boer leaders, who feel he is integrating Africans to an unacceptable level. At the same time, the leaders of the black enfranchisement movement criticize him for dragging his feet in protecting them from discrimination. Somewhat downplayed, in that Fagan's moderate line has so far lead to an improving South-African economy, but it is questionable how long it will last as social tension are continuing to rise.
