Awesome / Fright Night (1985)

  • On paper, "Welcome to Fright Night...for real" should be a painfully silly line, but Chris Sarandon hits just the right notes of sarcasm and condescension so that it instead encapsulates Jerry's character; he doesn't have to take any of this seriously, and he knows it.
  • Charley's reaction to Jerry mocking Peter and crushing his crucifix for a lack of faith? To show his own faith and repel Jerry with little effort.
  • Peter Vincent Becoming the Mask. It is glorious.
  • Several subtle bits do an excellent job of showing just how dangerous Jerry is: slowly pulling a door shut hard enough to crack the frame, tossing an apple with a single huge bite missing onto the lawn, casually flicking the latch off Charley's bedroom window. Who says vampires need a Game Face or dialogue to be scary...?
  • Amanda Bearse's ability to go from a geeky, teen girl to husky-voiced, seductive woman. It's amazing both are played by the same actress.
  • The soundtrack, especially "You Can't Hide From the Beast Inside". Listen closely to the lyrics. Superficially it sounds like an anthem cheering Jerry's power, but it's actually foreshadowing that his death will be caused by his lack of self-control.
