Part 21: The Fog Descends

November 21

You find that the fog's still around on your walk to school, in contrast to the other days, when it cleared up by morning. You walk to school and learn from Adachi that Namatame's awake and he gave an account of his actions. Apparently, Namatame made advances on Saki, which infuriates Yosuke. You also learn that Nanako can have visitors today.

You go to the hospital, and find that Nanako's barely responsive. The nurses get on Dojima's case for moving around so much, since he's still recovering himself. After speaking with a doctor, Dojima and your party learn that the fog may or may not have negative effects on people, since a lot of it is based on rumors. Meanwhile, you see a scene about two housewives discussing the accident, and see that people are starting to panic.

From this point until exams, you can talk to various party members to visit Nanako in the hospital, earning you points with all Investigation Team members, as well as a trophy if you do it three times.

Evening

I spent some more time with Rise.

November 22

I decided to get Naoto's rank to the cusp of maximum level, so that I'll have a variety of Social Links to advance near the end.

Fortune Rank 9

The man in a suit you met at the start of the link shows up, and introduces himself as Yakushiji. He apologizes for involving you in all this (as does Naoto, who was unaware of what was going on), saying that his master, Naoto's grandfather, put this on in order to help Naoto rediscover her passion for detective work.

Still, there's one final challenge, a reference to a place Naoto likes (high up) and doing something she doesn't like (throwing things away), and she finds it under a trash can. She finds the Detective's Pocketbook, and grows emotional as she realizes what she'd forgotten. She says she'd wanted to be acknowledged as a worthy successor by solving the case, and forgot what interested her. She says that everyone else gave her a reason, and that she no longer wants to run away by desiring to be an adult or a man. She's willing to admit that she's a woman and a detective, as well as the fact that she isn't the detective she wants to be yet.

Evening

I spent time tutoring.

November 23

I decided to get the remaining social links within one or two ranks of completion.

Emperor Rank 8

Kanji's about to take you to Aiya when two uniformed police officers come up to him, wanting to take him in to custody. You can stick up for him by asking if the police officers have a warrant, which impresses Kanji. The police officers assume you're accomplices, part of the Gang of Bullies that extort money from kids (possibly the same ones that were referenced in Chie's Social Link), although Kanji refuses to explain himself. To be fair to Kanji, while it's unwise to remain silent, the police officers seem determined to interpret his actions and words in the worst way possible, as when the kid he helped shows up, they try to put words in the boy's mouth, and don't believe him when he says that Kanji helped them.

With your help, Kanji finally gets the message, and proudly declares that he made eight dolls for the kid, and offers to sew on the cop's button. At this point, Kanji's mother shows up and asks what they're doing with Kanji. The officers are more respectful with Mrs. Tatsumi than with the others, but they start to insist that he's a bully. Mrs. Tatsumi says that Kanji, stupid and short-tempered as he may be, was not in any way involved, since he's kind to others, and corroborates his account. The two police officers quickly leave, and Kanji's shocked that his mother would believe him over the police, but she says that she knows her child, and tells him not to eat at Aiya before dinner. Kanji's overwhelmed, and insists that he's not crying.

Evening

I spent time with Naoto

November 24

I did Yosuke's link. He tends to fall by the wayside despite being one of my most frequently used party members, simply because every so often, someone else gets introduced and demands my attention.

Magician Rank 8

A surprisingly emotional Yosuke reminisces about taking a print club sticker with Saki. He recalls how he used to think he was "above" the place, since the parents saw him as the enemy, but Saki said that he's different from his parents (likely a statement that, if anything, is even more true considering her conflicts with her father). Of course, then Saki died, denying Yosuke the chance to get to know her better, and he was desperate to forget her and find some reason for him to be glad to be in Inaba. He breaks down in tears and apologizes, prompting you to comfort him, and, if you said "You were just upset" last time, hug him.

Evening

I tutored again.

Tower Rank 8

Shu mentions that he has a big test coming up, regardless of what time in the year it is. In my case, though, it fit quite nicely, since I was only a few days from exams myself. Going back to his previous concerns, he asks about whether there would be a person who's good at school, sports and social life. He laughs if you say that you're that person, but he's not nearly as confident himself, since he dreams about being on a train with someone getting one car closer to him every night, which may be related to the transfer student. He asks you to come back again.

November 25

I decided to do Rise's so that she could catch up with the others.

Lovers Rank 8

First, a brief note. Most party members' social links don't have voice acting until the last two stages, but in Rise's case, there's voice acting at this stage, including for two characters who don't otherwise have spoken dialogue.

Outside Souzai Daigaku, Rise encounters the deputy mayor, who's excited about the upcoming film, hopeful that they'll bring business to Inaba and unaware that Rise doesn't have any say in this.

Inoue then arrives, and asks Rise if she's really not coming back one more time, receiving the same answer. He's fairly understanding, though, and gives the surprising news that he's focusing on his job as Kanamin's manager. He admits that it's less than optimal, since Kanami, as an ordinary girl, has to be polished and given a "character" to sell (putting the lie to claims that Kanamin's more "real" than Risette, especially when Dancing All Night proves that the real Kanami is quite dorky), and says Rise was exceptionally talented. In the end, though, he respects her decision, wishes her well and leaves.

Rise's shocked to hear this after answering, and is quite upset that Inoue never told her that when they were working together (perhaps he didn't fully realize it back then, or perhaps she'd only believe it now that he's no longer trying to get her to come back), only saying that she's talented after she gave up her career. She only knows that she's upset, and doesn't understand the reason why. As she starts crying uncontrollably, she laments losing everything and begs for you to stay by her side. This leads to the choice whether to hug her (which, as an intimate act in Japan, begins a relationship with her), or to just stand there.

Whatever you do, Rise comes to the same realization- she hasn't lost everything, since you and the others are at her side and need her. After calming down a little, she then goes home.

Evening

I spent time with Yosuke.

November 26

In order to make sure that I had Marie done in time, I did her today.

Aeon Rank 9

Remember how I said that Marie had different dialogue if you did her link in November or December? Now that there's fog out, she's unusually on edge, particularly in the later stages.

Marie says that what she's most afraid about not being able to remember is that she won't have anything to call hers. At that point, though, she remembers eating steak skewers with you, along with the nickname you used. When you point out that she remembers, she gets defensive a moment before realizing the significance of it. She asks for your help, and the obvious choice is to say yes, at which point Marie cheers up and thanks you for your help.

After the link levels up, Marie asks you why you're with her, and if you want to romance her, you must say that you love her, and then hug her (if you don't she dismisses it as a lie, but is relatively polite about it). I did neither, though, and she said she was happy to be my friend.

Evening

I went over to tutor Shu, who seemed troubled by something, but then his mother confronted him over a phone call she got from the school, and I had to go home emptyhanded.

November 27

I did Hisano's Social Link, since I knew that I'd have two Sundays later on to do it.

Death Rank 8

This time, you have to go to Daidara again and get the letters from Hisano to her husband. Before throwing them away, she asks to look through them, and sees some more poetry from one lover to another. Once she's finished, she reaches her epiphany- she did love him, and that's why she was so upset over him forgetting her. She concludes that "he was all that (she) had," (which isn't quite true, considering that she has children and grandchildren), and now must accept his loss, even if she doesn't yet know how.

With the Social Link almost over, I decided to save the last two events for later, and deal with higher priority Social Links. Of course, there won't be time for Social Links for a while.

Evening

I drew a fortune for Rise.

November 28-December 2

Exams happened again. I was able to ace them this time.

December 3

The Investigation Team walks to school, trying to deal with the thick fog, and Rise uses the opportunity to stick close to Yu, much to Chie's chagrin. Rise notes that it's just like the other side, and Kanji, having a "Eureka!" Moment, puts on his glasses and realizes that he can see through it. Naoto realizes that this is no ordinary fog, and Chie wonders if the fog is leaking through the other world. This leads to a Stunned Silence, and Chie sheepishly says that she said the first thing that came to her mind. It shouldn't be that surprising, since the group had essentially all but arrived at that conclusion beforehand. Yosuke calls for another meeting at the special headquarters after school.

In class, you get your prediction of how you do on the exams, but the day is far from over.
