It might seem strange that the people who actually live in the town where the being was killed have the story wrong, but if you consider the cultural differences it makes a lot of sense. The [[spoiler:angel fell in Japan]] and its shown that a Shinto-like religion survived in the region all the way to the story's present. They'd have no particular reason to remember [[spoiler:a supernatural being bent on ending the world as anything other than a monster that had to be stopped]]. Rome, on the other hand, is shown to be a Christian, or at least monotheistic, nation, so the greater context of [[spoiler:God bringing judgment upon humanity with his angels has more context for them]]. Also, if the village realized that they almost [[spoiler:stopped the maidens from saving what was left of the world]], they might feel a little embarrassed and downplay their own role in the tragedy, whereas outsiders would have no reason to not be completely honest about it.
