* AudienceAlienatingPremise: It's a tcg anime with a cast of magical girls that's not actually about the card game. There's deep psychological trauma and a main character that loves her twin brother, that's taken seriously... wait, where are you going?

* BrokenBase: The show's attempt to downplay the MerchandiseDriven nature of CCG anime has seemed to create one of these. One camp dislikes the show's lack of focus on duels and game mechanics, citing that it loses what makes other CCG anime interesting and claiming that it fails to advertise anything, often citing TooBleakStoppedCaring (despite it being somewhat tamer compared to some of the darker parts of the {{Franchise/YuGiOh}} franchise), while the other camp praises the show for shifting its focus to the characters and the drama between them and for being something more than just a 22-minute long commercial for a card game.

** The effects of [[spoiler:Hitoe's corrupted wish]] are disturbing. In order for her to be physically incapable of making friends, she's suffering through a constant state of MindRape, forgetting any memories of her friends, replaced with anxiety and terror that nobody will like her as she stays locked in her room, mumbling and crying to herself. She seemed to be on the vurge of a complete mental breakdown with the repressed memories and the names of her friends alone enough to trigger her.
** Tama's [[spoiler:corruption at the hand of Ulith. Her skin is left pitch black and is left screaming for help as darkness consumes her. Ultimately she ends up as a savage berserker that viciously attacks Iona, leaving her a broken wreck. And just to rub it in, Ulith undoes the corruption just as Tama finishes so that she is left to witness what she just did]].

* VillainDecay: [[spoiler:Iona in ''Spread'']].

** In this show, Marie Okada depicts for the first time {{Jerkass}} a girl who is trying to achieve the reciprocity of the tender and innocent male LoveInterest, which can potentially ruin his life. It's almost a deconstruction of her standard stories about cruel guys who break hearts to miserable and poor girls.

* FoeYay: Ruko and [[spoiler:Iona]] in Episode 7. The latter seems to have a pleasure battling the former who later enjoys it too. Not to mention [[spoiler:Iona]]'s DoubleEntendre-laden dialogue. It gets creepier when [[spoiler:Iona [[NotSoStoic breaks her stoicness]] and begins to sound possessive of Ruko during their rematch. Even worse, her ultimate wish, which is granted at the end, is to become Ruko's new LRIG.]]

** In the first PV of ''Spread'' (second season), [[spoiler:Akira]] is shown being "kissed" by someone who likely to be a girl (as the camera is behind said girl). [[spoiler:In the second episode of ''Spread'', there is actually no kiss, it is just Ulith flirting at Akira who is her UnwittingPawn.]]

** [[spoiler:Iona appears to be getting jealous of Ruukochatting with Hitoe and Yuzuki more than with her.]]

* DieForOurShip: A male love interest in an ImprobablyFemaleCast never tends to go over well, but poor [[spoiler:Kazuki]] had the double misfortune of being [[spoiler:[[IncestIsRelative Yuzuki's brother]]]] as well as her crush. Even those fans who aren't into LesYay tend to dislike the pairing [[{{Squick}} for pretty obvious reasons]].

* CompleteMonster: In this dark take of a girly card game, the {{sadist}}ic and remorseless [[BloodKnight Ulith]] represents the very worse. Once a girl named Rumi Igarashi, she had a disturbing love of causing pain and misery and started off [[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals torturing animals]] before moving on to humans. When she was caught, Ulith was forced to behave like a normal girl, while seething inside for not being able to satisfy her twisted desires. She eventually comes across the Selector game where girls are given the chance to get a wish fulfilled, but where losing enough games will give them [[FateWorseThanDeath a horrible curse]] that will cause them to live a life of horrible agony based on their desire, while actually winning the game will lead them to being trapped inside a card with no way out except tricking another girl into winning the Selector game. Ulith knows about this and kept playing, giving her free reign to do what she wants: MindRape innocent people until death through [[DrivenToSuicide despair]] or circumstances. When she's not playing the game, she's usually goading others to her will and get them to cause pain. When the heroine Ruuko was about to end the Selector game for good, Ulith tries to stop her by playing one last game which will lead to the loser's death.

* EarWorm:

** The piano ballad turned vocal trance that is [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4_-fZ8WdpA "Realize Yume no Matsu Basho"]] is hard to resist as an ending theme.
** The second season's op, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46GIhFv0oLM "World's End/Girl's Rondo"]] just might be better than the first, with some very catchy lyrics and production tricks that make the song go all over the place without losing the elements that made the first so great.

* Also people prefer to ship Yuragi with Alfou rather than Mako, considering [[spoiler: all the hell Alfou went through since she was a human in order to reunite with Yuragi. Also, Mako is heterosexual for Itsuki.]]

* BaseBreaker: [[spoiler::Akira's new]] LRIG Mirurun. Some would say their personalities are very fitting together while others would like to [[spoiler:see Piruluk return]]. [[spoiler:The latter group does realize that since Akira lost three battles back in ''Infected'', she lost Piruluk in the process.]]

* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler:Akira]]. Even Ruko feels really bad for her. [[spoiler:Even more so in ''Spread'' where she has become an UnwittingPawn for Ulith. But come that season's Episode 6, she subverts this after kidnapping Hitoe.]]
