** Bob-Ombs are notable for having a very crippling self-destruction attack (which has a high chance of causing dizziness to a brother, completely leaving them open for further strikes until their turn comes). Said attack is [[DamnYouMuscleMemory very unintuitive]] to counter, as the player ''must'' scare them off with a preemptive hammer swing as they get close instead of hitting them outright, otherwise risking a direct explosion to the face. The timing for this is also pretty narrow and tricky to pull off.

** Getting Hoo Beans in general. The aforementioned surfing minigame is the only way to obtain them reliably, and yields two of every bean sans the Hee Bean upon getting the best possible time the second time onward (the first time yields a unique piece of gear). It's unlikely that you'll find enough Hoo Bean invisible blocks to brew all of E. Gadd's coffee drinks before that point, forcing you to wait until near the endgame to be able to complete that sidequest and get all of his rewards.

** The biggest reason the final fight with Cackletta is such an annoying boss comes from her spinning arms move, which she has a high chance of using at the very beginning (when Mario and Luigi are down to one HP, making it an insta-kill attack in essence), possibly before the player even gets to do anything (if you're not the type to LevelGrind, then it's very likely that Cackletta will outspeed both brothers). Her other starting moves are a bit troublesome too, but dodging/countering those is far more intuitive to do at the very least. The spinning arms, however, are known to slow down or speed up with little warning, and in fact may even stunlock the brothers if the player doesn't react fast. It's to the point that this move never stops being a legitimate threat throughout the whole battle, even if the player manages to heal themselves.

Three problems: 1) YMMV can't be played with. 2) The Koopalings appeared in the remake of Super Mario World, which was released for the GBA 2 years before Superstar Saga, so new players wouldn't have much trouble recognizing them. 3) Even then, their role in this game is so minimal it doesn't the player from understanding the plot, thus not being a case of Continuity Lockout.

* ContinuityLockout: Zig-zagged with the Koopalings. In the GBA version, the only appearances of them are from [[VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld their original stint]] a full twelve years ago, or their appearances in western-made media, which was two console generations ago for the former, and either long finished airing or on the not yet well known CD-i. They didn’t have dialogue to let you know who they are, either, making them feel like a bizarre pick compared to Jr. ([[VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine released a year ago]]) or [[VideoGame/MarioParty the Koopa Kids]]. The 3DS version, however, came out after the Koopalings were relevant again for quite some time, meaning you wouldn’t need to have access to an old console to know who they are.

* SalvagedStory: Bowser's role in ''Superstar Saga'' was criticized by some for turning him into a complete joke of a ButtMonkey and giving him barely any opportunity to shine. While the 3DS remake doesn't turn him into the complete badass that he was in the previous three ''Mario & Luigi'' games, it gives him more exposure, insight and depth via the ''VideoGame/MinionQuest'' mode where his minions work to save him, and shows he's just fine in the ending. The mode also fleshes out his story a bit more, giving him more moments where he fights back and turning his transformation into Rookie into a heartwarming moment rather than a cheap joke.

** Joke's End. It's the SlippySlideyIceWorld (minus FrictionlessIce) of the game. In contrast to the smiling faces littered all over the other areas, Joke's End has expressions of despair littered all over, and it's ''frozen.'' It wouldn't be so bad [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Atv7UWUK_A if this weren't the music]].
*** The statues found in Joke's End depict great suffering, with hands placed over their ears and tears streaming down their cheeks. It's almost like the place is the hell of the Beanbean Kingdom. [[FridgeBrilliance And it is. The theme of the Beanbean Kingdom is laughter, and Joke's End is the final resting place for cruddy jokes. The miserable-looking statues covering their ears may be meant to represent just how horrible a bad joke can be to the people of Beanbean.]]
*** Somehow, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NndjamvUtrU the remade music is even creepier]] and really drives the whole "joke graveyard" thing home.
** The original depiction of the monster in Guffawha Ruins. Not only is it shown breathing fire and [[EatenAlive eating a Toad alive]], it's rumored to [[FamilyUnfriendlyDeath brutally murder its victims by breaking their bones, stripping their flesh and sucking their blood.]]
** Many of the places that Cackletta involves herself with end up as this. The Mario Bros.' first visit to the Beanbean Castle Town. The houses and buildings are all wrecked and innocent civilians lie on the ground like they're on the verge of death. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I57xwMRQVOI The music makes it feel like you're walking in a graveyard.]] It gets worse, as [[spoiler:after having a nice town for a good portion of the game, it's reduced to this sorry state by Bowletta during the end of the game.]]
** The [[YouNoTakeCandle Oho Jees]]. In particular, the research team that was studying them accidentally lit one on fire, so it attacked one of the scientists, and the scientist ''transformed'' into an Oho Jee. Then, the research team regards it as no big loss, saying that [[ForScience science marches on.]]
** Bowletta has been cited by many to be a hideous {{Gonk}}, an AnimalisticAbomination, or just plain...''weird'' looking, and it just gets worse as you think about it further. Bowser's once big, prominent snout is now just thin lips with no nostrils, and his eyes and horns are replaced accordingly with Cackletta's own. Perhaps the most freakish change is the plastron of his shell, now adjusted to resemble a pair of... don't think about it too hard.

Authors Saving Throw is now Trivia that requires a citation from Word Of God for the reasoning. Many of these can go under Anti Frustration Features on the main page, and I think the entry for Bowser might be suited for a YMMV item launching tomorrow.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: The 3DS remake fixed a few issues that plagued the original GBA versions:
** Any [[ButThouMust forced tutorials]] have been removed, thanks to the addition of the guide mechanic from ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiPaperJam''. Now new players can simply view tutorials on their own time, while familiar players who already know the mechanics can skip it entirely.
** Bowser's role in ''Superstar Saga'' was criticized by some for turning him into a complete joke of a ButtMonkey and giving him barely any opportunity to shine. ** As it is now required for 100% Completion, the switch in Joke's End mentioned in ThatOneSidequest below is easier to get now thanks to a new barrel accessible to both Bros closer to the switch, as well as being able to walk faster while Luigi is in a barrel.
** Hammer guard holds as long as needed, whereas in the original it only lasted for a short time before the bro would drop his hammer and be vulnerable. That mechanic would be particularly frustrating for players who couldn't get the timing on an enemy's attack right.

** ''Superstar Saga'' is highly beloved, so the remake caused some breakage. Many fans were disappointed that much of the unique designs for characters were changed to conform more to mainline ''Mario'' design standards, feeling that the game's EarlyInstallmentWeirdness in that regard was one of its major charm points and that it feels soulless without them. They also dislike the removal of some unique [=NPCs=] like Psycho Kamek and the [[VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG Geno]] cameo (not helped by this game coming out after the ''Paper Mario'' series dropped almost every original character and species they had created, causing people to perceive the disliked changes of that series as creeping in on this one), and the continued use of the contested graphical style of ''Dream Team'' and ''Paper Jam''. Other fans are just happy to see an RPG as unique as ''Superstar Saga'' getting attention during the DorkAge of ''Mario'' [=RPGs=], enjoying the updated graphics and seeing the redesigns and removals as a consequence of time passing or a way of tying it in with the rest of the series.
