* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Vol 2 falls prey quite badly to this. Even putting aside that its main plot is a ForegoneConclusion that'll end in most of the named characters dead, most of the Togami siblings are sociopathic assholes (with Asagao, the nicest of the lot, being killed off first), the story piles horror after horror on the characters (most infamous being [[spoiler: Shinobu's sexual abuse and outright rape at the hand of both of her brothers]]) and [[spoiler: Kazuya, the narrator and the most developed character, is revealed at the end to be murderous {{Yandere}} who rapes his own step-sister]]. This makes it hard for many people to care.
* DesignatedHero: Byakuya is an even bigger {{Jerkass}} than normal in the novel, insulting and belittling practically everyone despite his life being on the line. What makes this worse is that [[spoiler: he decides to TakeOverTheWorld, and sees nothing wrong with this in spite of how immoral his behaviour is]]. Despite this, he is ''still'' meant to be the hero.

** Due to the huge cast, compressed pacing and ForegoneConclusion, a lot of the Togami siblings in Volume 2 suffer this. Eyumi is the worst; early on she states that her ambition is to become heir and cause TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt, which ''sounds'' like she'll be relevant, only for her to do basically nothing for most of the story [[spoiler: then gets killed by Jirou to show that he's gone crazy]].

* TheScrappy: Suzuhiko Ootsuki, who practically ''no one'' likes despite only being in the first volume for about 15 pages. ** Then Volume 2 reveals that he's also [[spoiler:a Togami]], as well as [[spoiler:Shinobu's full-blooded sibling who got caught in a compromising position with her when she was ''twelve'']], ''and'' was [[spoiler:considered one of the top fifteen candidates for the Heirship]] despite all of that.

Many fans ''cheered'' when he is caught in the fire. It really does not help that Kazuya's implied to actually be the Ultimate Impostor, and as such many fans are outraged that Satou is trying to paint the Ultimate Impostor as a rapist]].
** Byakuya himself tends to verge on this, thanks to his {{Jerkass}} demeanour being dialed UpToEleven while being forced to wield a massive IdiotBall. To make things worse; in the main series, Togami's behaviour nearly got him killed and lead to him [[TookALevelInKindness becoming less of a prick]], but here he's praised constantly by the main narrator and rarely suffers repercussions for his actions to borderline GodModeSue degrees. The fact that he's infamously OutOfFocus does not help.
** The entire Togami family (with the exceptions of Asagao and [[BaseBreakingCharacter arguably Shinobu]]) have become somewhat hated by fans thanks to being a bunch of RoyallyScrewedUp one-note {{Flat Character}}s who mostly just push around the characters fans actually care about. A lot of them are also obviously ripoffs of existing characters in the franchise, such as the aforementioned Suzuhiko essentially being a SpearCounterpart of Genocider Syo, for example. Many accuse Yuya Satou of making the entire family into one giant CreatorsPet.

At best, it's a groan worthy groan-worthy piece of shock value, while at worst it's a truly despicable narrative move that destroys any sympathy [[spoiler: Kazuya]] had built up.

** Byakuya himself tends to verge on this, thanks to his {{Jerkass}} demeanour being dialled UpToEleven while being forced to weild a massive IdiotBall. Making things worse that, where in the main series Togami's behaviour nearly got him killed and lead to him [[TookALevelInKindness becoming less of a prick]], here he's praised constantly by the main narrator and rarely suffers repercussions to borderline GodModeSue degrees.
A lot of them are also clearly ripoffs of existing characters in the franchise, such as the aforementioned Suzuhiko being a SpearCounterpart of Genocider Syo, for example. Many accuse Yuya Satou of making the entire family into one giant CreatorsPet.

** Due to the huge cast, compressed pacing and ForegoneConclusion, a lot of the Togami siblings in Volume 2 suffer this. Eyumi is the worst, early on she states that her ambition is to become heir and cause TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt, which ''sounds'' she'll be relevant, only for her to do basically nothing for most of the story [[spoiler: then gets killed by Jirou to show that he's gone crazy]].

** There's also the reveal that the Togami don't choose the top fifteen candidates based on their skills or intelligence, instead basing their decision ''entirely'' around [[spoiler:how well-connected their mothers are]], despite most of the candidates being either insane, complete failures or having no interest in becoming heir. And that's not even getting into the fact that [[spoiler:Suzuhiko]], whom the Togami know [[spoiler:abused his sister]], is still a top candidate...

* {{Padding}}: Lots of scenes consist less of story development and more Satou Yuuya spouting random trivia. Most blatantly, an entire scene in Volume II is entirely Byakuya, Shinobu and Celes discussing random Japanese historical figures.

Added DiffLines:

* AssPull: Lots of them. Most blatently [[spoiler: the end of Volume II reveals that the Kagami Sisters are actually Mioda and Tanaka in disguise]]. Not ''once'' is this remotely foreshadowed.

Added DiffLines:

* DesignatedHero: Byakuya is an even bigger {{Jerkass}} than normal in the novel, insulting and belittling practically everyone despite his life being on the line. What makes this worse is that [[spoiler: he decides to TakeOverTheWorld, and sees nothing wrong with this in spite of how immoral his behaviour is]]. Despite this, he is ''still'' meant to be the hero.

* InternetBacklash: In contrast to While the rest of the story is BrokenBase caused by Vol 1, Vol 2 embodied, you are highly, ''highly'' unlikely to find anyone who'll defend [[spoiler: Shinobu's heavily implied rape at Kazuya's hands]]. Added DiffLines:

* {{Misblamed}}: Yuya Satou is often accused of turning The Tragedy into a HatePlague. However, both ''LightNovel/DanganRonpaZero'' and ''VisualNovel/SuperDanganRonpa2'' had heavily implied the same thing when one was shown a despair-inducing image, making the Despair Book little more than an expansion on the concept.

** ''Byakuya himself'' ends up OutOfFocas and rarely if ever gets much in the way of screentime. Considering the people interested in the novel were mainly his fans, this pissed off a lot of people.

** Aloysius Pennyworth, Byakuya's BattleButler, is almost unanimously agreed to be the thing about Vol.2, thanks to being an amazing BadassGrandpa whose antics slip out from absurd into pure CrazyAwesome.
