* BrokenBase: Does ''Cave Story'' count as a {{Metroidvania}}? Despite being one of the most iconic indie examples, for some fans the game is considered too linear and story-oriented to qualify as such.

Has a redemption arc at the end, literally has no agency

** Misery herself crossed it when she ''specifically'' summoned Toroko to be experimented on, knowing full well what would happen to the young Mimiga. Despite the fact that [[spoiler:she's [[ForcedIntoEvil cursed to serve whomever wears the Demon Crown]]]], she clearly enjoys spreading [[MeaningfulName misery]], making her thoroughly unsympathetic.

* DifficultySpike: Things up to Plantation are relatively easy with save and refill points scattered around. However, Last Cave, especially if you're going for the best ending, ramps up the difficulty a lot. You do get a little breather at the Balcony with its one save and healing point before having to fight three bosses in a row with essentially no refills in between. This is not counting the BrutalBonusLevel and four/five-stage TrueFinalBoss that await you if you want to actually ''see'' the best ending...

** Getting
the BrutalBonusLevel GoldenEnding is such a massive spike in difficulty, that many players flat out don’t consider it worth getting. Not only does reaching it feature GuideDangIt that occasionally dips into ViolationOfCommonSense [[spoiler:(Most notably ignoring the Professor falling down a shaft so you can get Booster 2.0 when he turns up alive and four/five-stage well later despite him dying if you check up on him)]], but getting to the TrueFinalBoss requires going through the [[BrutalBonusLevel brutally difficult]] Blood Stained Sanctuary. Said TrueFinalBoss starts with a boss that await ends with a KaizoTrap, has 4 phases, and is much more difficult than every other boss. And there are [[CheckpointStarvation no checkpoints]] so dying sends you if you want back to actually ''see'' the best ending...start of the Blood Stained Sanctuary.

Added DiffLines:

* ItsHardSoItSucks: While most of the game is reasonably difficult, the process of getting the GoldenEnding is heavily criticized for [[GuideDangIt being nearly impossible to get without a guide]] and presenting an enormous difficulty spike. It’s to the point where many players don’t consider getting the True Ending worth it.

** In the Switch version, the dog quest that takes up most of the Sand Zone is changed so that you can carry all five dogs at once, and the last dog, formerly at the end of the area, is now near the Omega boss room. This makes the quest go by much more quickly.
** After 13 years, an update to ''+'' finally lets you ''refuse the Booster v0.8'' (so that you can get v2.0 later) and adds an extra platform to let you get out of the pit it's in without getting it, in case you fail the [[ThatOneSidequest rather tricky jump over it]].

'Took the rights' is a bit of aggressive language that insinuates they did so in an uncouth way. I don't like Nicalis, but the rumor that they 'stole' the rights to Cave Story is complete bunk. Implied misinformation is still misinformation.

* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: Most die-hard ''Cave Story'' fans are adamant about the freeware version of ''Cave Story'', the only one made entirely by Daisuke Amaya, being the best one. Part of it is that the freeware version is easily available and still works well, while most of the ports come with odd issues (such as music not looping properly and broken achievements) despite their other touch-ups, and they rarely get updated with fixes. The other reason is that every port is handled by Creator/{{Nicalis}}, an indie publisher that is controversial for many reasons, but especially for treating ''Cave Story'' as their mascot franchise, including it in crossovers and sending [=DMCAs=] to fan projects despite not developing it themselves. The very muddy situation about whether or not Nicalis took the rights to ''Cave Story'' from Studio Pixel outright (which has yet to be fully confirmed or unconfirmed) is enough for many fans to swear off Nicalis' ports and encourage people to play the freeware version and its FanTranslation, or give their money to Amaya's follow-up game ''VideoGame/KeroBlaster'' (which was published by Playism) instead.

* {{Woolseyism}}: Many consider the original fan translation far superior to the more Wonder Bread official localization that came years later. While the official translation clearly borrowed from the fan version used for years, it removed scores of little nuances and phrasings that were more dynamic and made each character seem more identifiable in how they came across. Of course, in many cases, the preference is as simple as changing Balrog's iconic "Huzzah!" to the "Oh yeeeaaah!" Kool-Aid Man reference.
