''Grisaia no Rakuen'' ("The Eden of Grisaia") is the third part of the ''Grisaia'' trilogy which began with ''VisualNovel/GrisaiaNoKajitsu'' and starts off where ''VisualNovel/TheLabyrinthOfGrisaia'' ended: with Yuuji arrested for suspected terrorism. Following the public announcements and video of Yuuji apparently committing the crimes, he is taken away by Ichigaya, the organization he works for as a black ops agent. Yuuji himself seems fatally resigned, however, believing that he has fulfilled his promise to Asako to save five people and is therefore willing to die so he can hopefully be with her again.

All is not so simple, however. Ichigaya knows he did not commit any terrorist actions, but Yuuji ''did'' fail to assassinate the leader of the actual terrorists, Heath Oslo. Instead, he is being used as a bargaining chip as the only surviving member of an experimental group designed to produce superior soldiers through a combination of conditioning and drugs. The third involved party is that of the Mihama girls, who don’t know how they can help but are determined not to let Yuuji be killed or traded away for some political advantage. Though at first their efforts seemed doomed to failure, a mysterious figure answering to the name of Thanatos appears before both them and Yuuji. To the latter, she reveals herself to be his lost sister Kazuki.

''Rakuen'' is divided into four basic stories. The main storyline follows as above and upon completion unlocks both an afterstory and the Prologue of Grisaia, a short story detailing how all five girls came to Mihama and ending with the announcement that Yuuji will soon be attending. The fourth and final section is a series of sex scenes involving minor and supporting characters with varying levels of plausibility between the various scenarios.

----
!!This visual novel provides examples of the following:

* AbhorrentAdmirer: Yuuji finds Millie kind of obnoxious when she tries to cling to him, so while she might be a friend and ally, she’s just too annoying to go out with or anything.
* AccidentalMisnaming: Sakuaki Jubico and Keizami Yuzuri.
* AccidentalPervert: [[spoiler:The harem ending really gets a start when Yuuji walks in on Yumiko in the bath and the pair of them have to go hide in a cramped space.]]
* TheAce: Sachi showed up able to cook competently, nearly even at basketball with the much taller Amane despite Amane having been in a basketball club, a good student, friendly, studious and diligent.
* ACupAngst: Chiara mournfully compares herself to JB and comes up lacking.
* AdaptedOut: Inverted with Michiru's split personality in the anime (the Donor Girl). Since the anime version of ''Rakuen'' follows ''Kajitsu's'' arc, the Heart Donor girl still exists when Michiru switches eye color.
* {{Angrish}}: After Thanatos starts whispering “senpai” through Yumiko’s sound system, she turns up the volume to try and hear what she’s saying. Thanatos instantly begins speaking normally and an enraged Yumiko’s response amounts to [[SymbolSwearing %#*$&%$#($)]].
* AnArmAndALeg: [[spoiler:Yuuji ambushes Travis and cuts off his left hand. After Travis fires fruitlessly around him trying to hit Yuuji, he’s left with a stump on his right wrist too.]]
* ArentYouGoingToRavishMe: Chiara is offended that Yuuji won’t sexually harass her.
* ArtificialLimbs: [[spoiler:Presumably because the fracture was never treated and she wasn’t found until she was on the verge of death, Kazuki’s left arm was amputated above the forearm and replaced with a grabbing hook. Or at least, that’s what Chizuru assumed, because it’s just a toy. Her arm is fine.]]
* AttentionWhore: During the main storyline, Michiru’s mostly over her need to be in the center of attention, but in the Prologue of Grisaia she’s trying her best to catch any attention she can. Even if it involves making people want to punch her.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: After Michiru is absolutely horrified and depressed [[spoiler:about her pregnancy]] the normal jokes and mocking instantly come to a halt and everyone does their best to try to cheer her up.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler:Michiru wakes up sick one day and with no appetite and continues that way for awhile. Nobody has any clue why she’s so lethargic, so she goes to Kazuki, who tells her she’s probably pregnant. So now Yuuji decides he needs to take responsibility and marry her. Sachi decides that’s fine and simply says she’ll have to get pregnant next so she can marry him too. It continues from there.]]
* BabyTrap: Self imposed. [[spoiler:Yuuji secretly decided that he wouldn’t commit to any girl until one of them got pregnant and then he would marry that one. Michiru was the only one to forget about birth control, so she got pregnant and he decided he’d propose. Sachi and the others just sort of figured that they should go get pregnant too then, ruining that plan.]]
* BadLiar: In a bit of a sad example, Makina was so conditioned to not admitting that she had preferences or dislikes when it came to food, that she would tell obvious lies like that eating meat was against her religion. She didn’t want to cause trouble.
* BatmanGrabsAGun: Yuuji dislikes killing even apart from the fact that actually doing so usually makes him throw up, [[spoiler:but at the climax he infiltrates the floating fortress and quickly snaps a guard’s neck after briefly noting to himself that if he’s to have any chance of success, he’ll have to kill everyone that gets in his way.]]
* BeautyMark: JB has a small mole right below her left eye.
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler:Zoey wasn’t really married to Robbie initially, but a real relationship eventually developed.]]
* BelligerentSexualTension: Yuuji and Yumiko spend a sex scene with Yuuji mocking her while she snaps back in response.
* BigDamnHeroes
** The second portion of the story is all about setting one up and trying to pull it off. Namely, the rescue of Yuuji.
** Millie is about to get caught by soldiers when Eddie pops up to knock them out. She barely manages to take off in the overloaded helicopter. [[spoiler:She later comes to the rescue of the girls after they’re pinned down by another helicopter.]]
* TheBigGuy: Sachi for the Mihama girls. She is the most physically active of the group and caries out orders effectively. She is also able to hold her own in dangerous situations. For a good example of Sachi in action see [[spoiler:NinjaMaid]].
* BitchInSheepsClothing: The waitress at the maid café is superficially polite, but beneath the surface brims with sarcasm and hostility.
* BloodFromTheMouth: Kazuki warned the girls not to eat the rice she had stashed as a last resort without preparing it as a gruel because their bodies couldn’t handle solid food in their state. When she goes off to take care of Kaneda, Koide ignored her. When Kazuki walked back, she was puking blood.
* BombDisposal: [[spoiler:Sachi has to defuse a bomb as part of a test, set up by the Thanatos system to mesure her skills, but since it's just a test, Thanatos actually used a mock bomb.]]
* BrainUploading: Kazuki claims that their father basically pawned off Kazuki’s brain for money to MENSA, who built a computer out of her. Not exactly true, but close enough.
* BrattyHalfPint: Makina gets away with a lot of obnoxious behavior thanks to her size and youthful appearance.
* BrokenAce: Captain Garrett looked on Yuuji’s obvious talent for combat and said he could be a national treasure. Of course, by this point we know that in the process of getting there he’s been mostly destroyed as a person.
* BrotherSisterIncest: Kazuki seems to be disappointed that Yuuji isn’t all sweet and docile like she remembered, but she feels some not quite sisterly emotions for him.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Jimmy is indeed an excellent communications officer, but he also calls Yumiko to chat about [[LittleSisterHeroine imouto]] [[LadyOfWar samurai girls]]. Poor Yumiko doesn’t even know why he’s talking about this when Yuuji is being held captive let alone what he’s actually talking about in the first place.
* ButNotTooForeign: Chiara is of mostly Japanese descent but also some vague African heritage, making her mostly tanned looking.
* ButtMonkey: It all starts when Michiru overeats to keep Sachi feeling happy and useful. In quick succession, she is then drawn on in her sleep, picked on, sprints outside and then pukes for about half an hour thanks to overeating, is tricked into getting into a car with Amane and spends much of the ride puking thanks to Amane’s driving. Worse yet, she then has to put up with Thanatos being as obnoxious as she possibly can. Well, at least Yumiko is nice to her.
* CallBack: Yumiko’s hopes for a cool secret agent are just as crushed upon seeing James as Danny’s were for “Immortal” (actually [[LittleSisterHeroine Imouto]]) Robbie.
* CannotTellAJoke: One thing Kazuki never improved at was having a proper sense of humor. [[spoiler:The fake looking artificial arm is a fake artificial arm. Kazuki apparently thought it would be funny to pop it off and on, but Chizuru just freaked out.]]
* ChainOfDeals: We only get the first two steps, but following Thanatos’ instructions Michiru buys hundreds of thousands of discarded cell phones and has the rare metals stripped out to be sold. This money then turns into various other schemes throughout the day including such links as buying someone a beer and purchasing real estate. Michiru has not the slightest idea what she’s actually doing or what country she’s even in during these deals, but money just rolls in. She doesn’t know how much it is exactly in the end, but she started with a thousand yen and ended up with tens of millions by the end of the day.
* ChekhovsGun: Makina’s route in Kajitsu established that Sachi’s maid outfits were almost military grade gear and included a gas mask.
* TheChick: Michiru is pretty much this. Surprising enough she is the not useless kind, serving as TheHeart, and despite her ButtMonkey status, there have been cases where she has shown value to the team, surprising many of her teammates in the process.
* ChickMagnet: Let’s see, five crazy girls at Mihama, the Mihama principal, his boss, his boss’s assistant, his master, a former fellow soldier, his sister and maybe that girl at the terrorist training school [[spoiler:that was killed trying to escape while impregnated with his clone]].
* ChristmasCake: Chizuru admits that she’s probably going to have to get married soon if ever, but that her family probably wouldn’t like her going for her students.
* CloudCuckoolander: Sachi’s plan for rescuing Yuuji has her tunneling through underground near the waterline, sailing in a boat, tunneling up through the compound under Yuuji’s round and then setting off dynamite so that he’ll neatly fall into the boat she’s prepared. When Amane tactfully points out that all else aside, the shockwave could easily kill Yuuji, Sachi’s next idea is to fill his room with water first to minimize the blast. Bad as Michiru’s following idea is, it’s still more practical than what Sachi came up with.
* CodeName: All the Mihama girls use code names for the operation and they’re all insulting. For example, Michiru is OT, which is short for Obnoxious Tsundere.
* CoolBigSis
** Much to her horror, [[spoiler:after Kazuki is taken from the Thanatos system]] Makina and Sachi both begin referring to her as their older sister. Though being called [[spoiler:Tanako]] by Michiru might be even more annoying than that.
** Amane is definitely the protective big sis figure in the dorm, especially to Makina.
* CovertPervert: Yumiko, the only one with a computer, spends most of her time on it looking at porn.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: In the middle of an argument, Kaneda’s brain began hemorrhaging and leaking blood and cerebrospinal fluid out her nose. She doesn’t die immediately, but it’s an agonizing experience and she succumbs before too much longer. Ironically, despite having assumed she’d be the next to die, she’s actually the last of the basketball girls to succumb.
* DeadPersonConversation: In the middle of a nightmare about all the dead people Yuuji knows, Asako appears and the dream stops being so awful. Yuuji tells her he’s prepared to die himself now that he thinks he’s saved five people, but Asako asks him if he’s really okay with just that much.
* DeathSeeker: Yuuji, his mission to saved five people now accomplished, simply wishes to die and hopefully see Asako again. Or to just die. When JB talks to him at the beginning, she wants him to just ask for her help so that she can do everything in her power to save him, but he refuses to say a thing.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Yumiko is at the end of the defrosting action. She admits that Yuuji isn’t the full reason she’s going to all this effort but rather because everyone in Mihama is important to her and she can only be normal around them, not around most people.
* DelayedReaction
** Thanatos sends JB a message through TV subtitles because she can’t speak to her directly while JB is in confinement. JB, however, is bored out of her skull and not really paying any attention whatsoever, so it takes a full minute for the words that just went across the screen to actually sink in.
** Michiru was actually supposed to show up at Mihama almost immediately, but when she asked for a taxi to take her to Mihama[[note]]美浜[[/note]], the driver took her to a different Mihama[[note]]三浜[[/note]]. After two months, she realized that she was surrounded by middle schoolers and wasn’t wearing the same uniform as everyone else.
* DemolitionsExpert: Sachi became somewhat of a bomb expert, after being trained by Yuuji.
* DenserAndWackier: Do you remember super serums, brain uploading and artificial robots limbs in Kajitsu or Meikyuu? No? Well, now we have them.
* TheDitz: Michiru has a habit of asking questions and then either not understanding the explanation or simply getting distracted and not listening at all.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Do the sound effects of Michiru and Makina devouring jam sound suspicious to you? They certainly sound suspicious to Sachi.
* DoggedNiceGirl: Yuuji seems to tune out girls like this.
** He finds Millie frankly annoying, though that’s partially because she’s just kind of irritating in general even when she isn’t constantly flirting with him.
** Chiara keeps asking if Yuuji wants to touch her butt because she says she likes him. Yuuji’s dry response is that there’s other ways of getting your feelings across, though he admits he prefers a straightforward approach to someone who tries being too roundabout.
* DoNotCallMePaul: Robbie is trying to lie low, so he prefers to be called Jimmy Okada.
* DoubleMeaning: When Chizuru said Sachi was an honor student, she didn’t mean that Sachi happens to be a very diligent girl, but rather that she is obsessively diligent and here ''because'' she's an "honor student."
* TheDragon: Travis is Heath Oslo’s apparent top enforcer [[spoiler:but he’s “disarmed” and killed with no fuss or effort on Yuuji’s part.]]
* TheDreaded: When [[spoiler:invading Heath Oslo’s floating island]] in the climax, Yuuji specifically fights and acts in a way that first baits in enemies and then terrifies them, demoralizing his enemies further as he continues.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Michiru initially refuses to get into the car with Amane even though further cooperation with Thanatos explicitly requires Michiru’s presence here. She quickly throws up thanks to Amane’s crazy driving. Her driving is so terrifying that she makes a random thug with a high end car start crying, terrified of the green demon.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: Danny died offscreen between games. So he must have been dead by Meikyuu, but we neither saw nor heard about it.
* EmptyShell: Ibuki during the bus crash slowly faded into an emotionless, trancelike and barely responsive state. She finally broke out of it when she realized that Sakuma had been stabbed to death, which caused her to leap upon the killer, Sakashita.
* EverybodyKnewAlready: Apparently, Yumiko was under the impression that the other students had no idea that she was from the famous, wealthy Sakaki family, but they were all given a pamphlet when they joined the school that contained information about who runs the place. Namely, Yumiko’s family. Plus, Sachi’s family has done business with the Sakakis before.
* EvilKnockoff: [[spoiler:Yuuji has one. He sarcastically calls Yuuji his brother.]]
* ExactWords: Pulled accidentally by Amane. When Yukiko gets home after an irritating investigation, Amane asks what she wants to eat and she says anything but soba, which she ate while she was out. She makes udon instead and Yumiko grumbles about having to eat more noodles.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: Sakuma died tried to protecting Amane and Kazuki. When she was stabbed, she simply forgave Sakashita. Everyone else apart from Ibuki had deaths as dignified as could be possibly under the circumstances and for her it wasn’t possible.
* FaceDoodling: The first night on the boat, Michiru eats too much so Sachi won’t feel like she caught too much food and spends the night deeply asleep and somewhat sick. With her too out of it to notice anything, a certain someone scribbles on her eyelids.
* FaceOfAThug: Amane showed up riding a motorcycle, wearing a leather jacket and about half a foot taller than Chizuru, who was terrified at her appearance until she realized that she was the new transfer student and very domestic.
* FanDisservice: At least two of the bonus sex scenes are very uncomfortable. Okay, yeah, Yuuji’s mom was pretty, but a sex scene between her and her son where she hates herself for being so weak and useless is probably not very sexy. Nor is a scene with a bunch of girls who all die horribly in the mountains after engaging in cannibalism and [[spoiler:two girls who kill each other.]] Followed by a second scene with a girl that died sitting in her own waste, one who committed suicide and was partially eaten and one who died vomiting blood.
* {{Fanservice}}: There’s a number of bonus sex scenes available, some of them fairly plausible[[note]]Chizuru, Millie and JB are not only possible but likely[[/note]] and others not so much[[note]]Chiara’s takes place in a different continuity as a hypothetical ‘what if Yuuji groped Chiara when asked?’ and Yuuji’s mother and the basketball girls are basically pure fanservice with no chance of having really occurred while the Garrett scene is pretty out of character and plotless[[/note]]. Either way, they’re mostly there to provide some sex scenes that were absent during the main storyline. Though compared to Meikyuu at least they pretend to make sense without random alterations like making JB the school nurse or Yuuji taking over the Irisu conglomerate by sleeping with Kiyoka.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Heath Oslo is polite and stylish, but also vicious and completely unscrupled. His temper is also much worse than it seemed at first, though he controls it perfectly.
* FeelNoPain
** At first it seems that [[spoiler:Yuuji got through the entire battle throughout the floating fortress unscathed]] but afterward he realizes he’s actually heavily wounded. He simply didn’t feel the injuries at first.
** After that, he’s offered a drug by [[spoiler:his evil clone of sorts]] that would dull down the body’s instinctual limiters. [[spoiler:If you don’t take it, he refuses because while it would allow him to fight stronger and faster, he would be breaking his own bones in the process and leaving him unable to fight Heath Oslo while healthy.]]
* FeigningIntelligence: Following Thanatos’ instructions, Michiru acts dignified and collected. With everyone buying her act, she goes through a ChainOfDeals turning a thousand yen into tens of millions starting with buying discarded cell phones to strip them of rare metals.
* FingerTwitchingRevival: [[spoiler:After Yuuji blows up the floating fortress we see a floating arm. The hand starts to clench into a fist.]]
* {{Flanderization}}: Michiru has almost nothing to her but being a buttmonkey. Before, her attitude was largely faked and she wasn’t quite as dumb as she acted, especially not socially. Now she’s so ditzy that she attended the wrong Mihama academy for two months despite not having a matching uniform and being surrounded by kids a few years younger than her. Apart from her, Makina is a bit more of a jerk and Sachi is a bit denser and more obsessed with sharks, but nothing special. Yumiko and Amane on the other hand have had their previous quirks toned down.
* FriendlessBackground: Yumiko spends the entirety of the prologue thinking of the other girls as mere classmates because she’s never had a friend before. When an old woman thanks her for helping to clean up the town with her friends, she finally realizes that the other four are her first friends.
* FriendshipMoment: Robbie is devoted to Yuuji for sticking up for him when he got irritated and mouthed off to someone much bigger than him. Apparently, fighting for him until he was literally vomiting blood didn’t make as big of an impact. Of course, it’s possible he doesn’t want to tell a girl stories that involve her boyfriend killing lots of people and passing out in a pool of blood and vomit.
** Even if Yumiko finds Makina annoying sometimes, she’s genuinely glad that she calls her something silly like Yumi-chan. No one’s ever given her a nickname before.
* TheGadfly
** After awhile it seems as though Thanatos isn’t so much testing the Mihama girls but just trying to be as obnoxious as possible by making them run around and insulting them. Fortunately, Michiru’s normal personality is so annoying that she can retaliate effectively without even realizing it.
** Kazuki may be a genius, but she forgot to account for one very important thing: Yuuji likes to annoy girls now.
* GambitRoulette: Thanatos’ instructions to the Mihama girls involve a ridiculous amount of perfect timing and reading of their character, like arriving at a locker, reading the message to turn around and then getting hit by someone carrying a ladder. All without any seemingly awkward movements.
* GirlInABox: [[spoiler:The Thanatos system core is Kazuki in a tube. JB was under the impression that if Kazuki was still there she would have had most of her body removed. However, just a spinal cord and brain are too difficult to keep alive. Her body has deteriorated to the extent that she cannot even dress herself and walking is painful, though.]]
* TheGlomp: Subverted. Millie runs towards Yuuji with every intention of giving a tackling hug, but he just sticks a fist in front of her where her face is going to be.
* GreenEyedMonster: Every girl wants Yuuji for herself, after all, one of the major reason why they want to save him is because they are fallen in love with him, so when [[spoiler:Michiru steals a kiss from him right in front of them, they do not take it well, some of them even resolve to (strictly comedic) violence.]]
* HandWave: Why didn’t Kazuki contact Yuuji or save him or anything like that? Because she didn’t want him to see her new form at first and then lost track of him or something. [[spoiler:Her memories were actually sealed. When Robbie allowed her to link up to her original memories, she regained her identity and was the one that approved his semi retirement and enrollment in Mihama.]]
* TheHeart: Amane has quietly taken over this position from Michiru by virtue of simply patiently waiting for events to unfold and keeping everyone from fighting too much now that they’re all under such high tension. It helps that the sex jokes have largely ceased.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: The designer of the Thanatos system was assassinated when he tried selling the design to Heath Oslo.
* {{Hikikomori}}: Yumiko starts getting called Bocchi because she never really goes anywhere if she can help it and just stays online all night. [[spoiler:She’s also one of the two girls that never gets a tan when everyone is on a tropical island for several years.]]
* HoneyTrap: Millie lures a male pilot away with some very embarrassing actions and when she gets him into the bathroom promptly knocks him out, steals his uniform and replaces him.
* HopelessSuitor: In the epilogue, Chizuru and [[spoiler:Kazuki]] have a conversation about Yuuji’s likely romantic prospects. The latter throws support for any of the five main heroines and says that while Yuuji and JB probably couldn’t have a proper married life, they’re still inseparable and whatnot. Chizuru? Nope. She admits it herself. Though if you want to get into real hopeless suitor territory remember that Millie isn’t even on the island and Chiara has been largely forgotten.
* HotForStudent: Chizuru’s bonus H scene and the epilogue remind the reader that she’s got a thing for Yuuji, though she’s mature enough to realize it probably won’t go anywhere and might not be a very popular idea and sensible enough to realize that she can’t exactly go around wearing a suit like an adult while on a date with a student.
* IdentityAmnesia: When Kazuki awoke as the Thanatos system, she gradually realized that she should have some memories, but they’re blocked off. [[spoiler:With Robbie’s help she managed to regain access to her identity and became Kazuki again.]]
* IDontWantToDie: If you take Dream Asako as being the real thing, at the end she no longer wanted to die a dog’s death. She didn’t want to leave Yuuji behind, but kept it bottled up inside.
* IgnoredExpert: In a rather tragic example, Kazuki warned the girls not to eat the rice without turning it into a gruel first so they could actually digest it without vomiting. When she left briefly to take care of Kaneda, Koide was unable to resist and ended up unable to hold it down just like Kazuki said.
* IHaveBoobsYouMustObey: When Yumiko asked Amane how she got so friendly with the Mihama locals so quickly, Amane just grins and poses, attributing everything to a woman’s weapons. Cleavage helps too.
* ImplicitPrison: Knowing that JB absolutely cannot be trusted to not help Yuuji escape, Ichigaya simply removes her as his commanding officer and puts her in temporary confinement. She still manages to pass messages through her aid, however. She’s kept comfortable, but is ridiculously bored since she can’t work.
* InformedAttribute: Amane was said to be timid when she first arrived in Mihama, but she’s actually pathologically nosy and intrusive. During their first class together, she asked if Yumiko was a virgin.
* InseriesNickname: Michiru calls Thanatos Tanako.
* ItIsPronouncedTroPAY: Chizuru is annoyed when J pronounces her name, well, Chizuru instead of the technically correct Chidzuru, which sounds almost exactly the same.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: Kazuki’s terrible sense of humor is just sort of shrugged off thanks to her relation to Yuuji. Though it’s a different kind of terrible, [[spoiler:like wearing a fake prosthetic for months or even years before casually just popping it off.]]
* ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies: Yuuji cuts off contact with the Mihama girls because he doesn’t want them to be put in danger.
* {{Jerkass}}
** Adam seems to take real pleasure in being a jerk to Yuuji.
** Makina is very demanding and unpleasant to a lot of people, though it’s played for laughs. Her obnoxiousness even helps her get through a hotel clerk who simply files her under “Annoying customer” and stops asking questions about why a supposedly thirty eight year old woman looks approximately a third that age.
* JustOneMan: At the climax of the story Oslo's right hand man Travis thinks it won't take long to capture Yuuji since he is severely outnumbered and is just one kid. [[spoiler: He doesn't outlive that sentiment by much.]]
* KilledOffscreen: Danny apparently died between the flashbacks in Meikyuu and the present in Rakuen. The other members of the squad are also largely considered dead.
* KnifeFight: At the finale of the novel Yuuji has a one against [[spoiler:his own [[EvilKnockoff evil clone]].]]
* KnifeNut: Yumiko’s first reaction to the news that Amane would soon be attending amounted to “If we get along, that’s fine. If we don’t, I’ll just attack her with a box cutter.”
* LampshadeHanging: The narration helpfully notes that crazy people who get sent to Mihama are probably not going to listen when told not to put themselves in danger.
* LaserGuidedKarma: It was series villain Heath Oslo that thaught the basics of knife combat to [[spoiler:Yuuji, or the fact that anything with a sharp point can be used as a deadly weapon. A method which Yuuji often used when he was still a brainwashed child soldier/assassin of Oslo, killing several of his targets with a [[ThePenIsMightier ballpoint pen]]. At the climactic confrontation of the two at the end of novel, Yuuji puts this knowladge to good use when killing Oslo, by stabing him in the eye with a ballpoint pen.]]
* TheLeader: Yumiko more or less leads the Mihama girls with Yuuji out of the picture. She takes charge of the investigation, lays out a plan of action and does most of the real work while Amane keeps the group stable and the other three more or less sit around being useless and talking about pudding. However, to her chagrin, she finds it hard to convince people to actually stop and listen long enough to actually hear any sensible directions from her. She eventually gets shunted over into MissionControl instead.
* MaidCafe: After marrying the daughter of a soba shop owner, Robbie converted it into a maid café where his wife now works as a passive aggressive waitress.
* MarryThemAll: No commitment before the story and after the end Yuuji [[spoiler:is on an island with the Mihama girls, Kazuki, JB and Chizuru. Kazuki wonders how he ended up with a harem and resolves to make him pick just one. She fails, though Yuuji suspects she knew he would and was hoping he’d pick the incest option. Which he kinda does, partially.]]
* MeleeATrois: [[spoiler:When it finally comes time for Yuuji’s rescue, Heath Oslo attacks the Ichigaya escort and steals away Yuuji. The Mihama team then disables their cars and grabs Yuuji for themselves. Millie in her helicopter is nearby as well.]]
* MissionControl: Yumiko is a definite unathletic indoor type, so she isn’t even sent outside when the operation commences.
* MistakenForProstitute: In the middle of Yuuji’s rescue, a drunk comes up to Sachi, dressed as a maid like always, and asks “how much.” Confused, she asks how much of what and he responds how much money, of course. Since her picture was valued at 570000 yen in a previous scene she offers that as a response, causing him to shake his head and give up. Thanatos says that her offer was pretty cheap and that guy had no sense of value. She still doesn’t get it.
* MrExposition: Lampshaded. Kazuki talks constantly and at great length. Even when she tries to summarize the points she’s trying to make, they still take forever.
* MultipleEndings: Only two.
** One, you can decide to be silly at the end and [[spoiler:become the new Heath Oslo.]]
** Or two, you can decide to not be evil and end the game normally and happily. [[spoiler:Yuuji sets off the bomb detonator that was on his arm after unlocking it, destroying the floating island and the real Heath Oslo. He survives because he’s magic or something.]]
* MyGreatestSecondChance: Like Yumiko, Amane isn’t going along to help Yuuji just because she cares about him but rather so that she has the opportunity to simply not run when someone else needs her help.
* MythologyGag: “If Yuuji is gone, who is Yumiko going to grope in the middle of the night?!”
* NeverBringAGunToAKnifeFight: The basis of Heath Oslo favoring knives over guns is that in close quarters, a gun is too predictable so long as you stay calm. It only fires straight while a knife can come from anywhere. However, at range, a knife is admittedly useless.
* NinjaMaid: [[spoiler:Sachi charges a stopped vehicle filled with terrorists and gets them to open fire on each other by using smoke grenades and then overpowers their leader in hand to hand combat, though it was mostly because the sheer surprise in seeing a maid with a gas mask kept him from using his weapon effectively until it was pinned. Then she had a weapon, he didn’t and wasn’t getting much oxygen. Also, her uniform is bulletproof for some reason.]]
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Sakuma stopped Kaneda from killing Kazuki and refused to keep chasing Amane just to silence her. For this last gasp of morality, Sakashita stabbed her in the gut.
* NoRangeLikePointBlankRange: [[spoiler:After being on the ropes for much of the fight with his evil clone, Yuuji headbutts him, wounds his side and then outmaneuvers him to place his gun right over gut. No dodging THAT.]]
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Millie notes at one point that her seduction trick always works because guys always fall for a pretty girl showing interest in them… Except Yuuji, who just looks annoyed when she tries.
* NotNowKiddo: When “Thanatos” gives directions to the Mihama girls to run across town, everyone sprints out without waiting while Yumiko futilely tries to catch their attention. If they’d waited for five seconds, she could have told them there was a bicycle.
* OccidentalOtaku: Robbie is now James Okada after marrying (?!) a local girl and running a café with her.
* TheOjou: In the course of Yumiko’s investigation she heads to the Soba shop that Robbie now runs with his wife. She’s completely baffled before she even enters, never having heard of a maid café nor knowing why a restaurant would boast about a Wifi connection. Fortunately, she still has access to the wealth that sheltered her from these experiences, allowing her to buy a houseboat to serve as the Mihama girls’ base even after her father’s company is in trouble.
* OlderThanTheyLook
** [[spoiler:When Kazuki is taken out of the tube, JB has to carry her away. When Chiara finds them, she thinks JB has kidnapped a middle schooler.]]
** Chizuru is around thirty and looks about half that age, which she hates. When she tries on the Mihama uniform, Yuuji pretends not to recognize because the principal he knows doesn’t cosplay.
* OldMaid: Like JB before her, Chizuru wants to graduate from virginity, though she’s still halfheartedly holding out for a Prince Charming.
* OneManArmy: [[spoiler:Yuuji infiltrates Heath Oslo’s floating base and systematically begins wiping out his entire organization. And he’s actually sick while doing this and mildly hallucinating. And didn’t bring a loaded gun with him.]]
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: [[spoiler:Zoey allows Yuuji to live until Heath Oslo is killed because Yuuji merely asks for her to delay killing him so as to not make too much of a fuss on the submarine.]]
* ParentalIncest: For whatever reason, a bonus sex scene with Yuuji and his mom was included. You know, the one that died years ago. Needless to say, this is at least one thing Yuuji didn’t really have to deal with as a kid.
* PetTheDog: After Kazuki’s rather amoral and distant portrayal in the first bus crash flashback, in the second she does her best to save a girl that stood up for her. Ultimately futile, but up to this point the natural assumption for her behavior would be that she would have simply run away when Sakuma and Sakashita started arguing. She finally cares about the other girls making it out, but too late.
* PickyEater: Makina wouldn’t eat things she didn’t like when she first arrived, though Yuuji gradually nudged her into eating more balanced meals. Generally, she’d only eat fruit, some sweets or hard bread.
* PinkIsFeminine: After Makina declares that the sleek black phones Thanatos provided are ugly, she asks for something pink next time. She always wants everything to be pink. Unfortunately, the next thing she gets from Thanatos is a fairly powerful air rifle. It’s bright pink.
* PosthumousCharacter: We get another flashback with the dead basketball team. Though starting from the point where Amane fled in terror, their portrayal is back to being pitiful again. The girls may consider themselves damned after their cannibalism, but Sakuma and Ricchan don’t want to have to kill someone.
* PottyEmergency: Michiru has one in Episode 10, while in her robot suit. Later on, PottyFailure is implied.
* PoweredByAForsakenChild: [[spoiler:The Thanatos system is run by connecting the spine and brain of a middle school girl to a complex array of computers.]]
* PragmaticVillainy: Oslo doesn’t refrain from using his nukes because he’s moral, but rather because they are A. more valuable as a reusable threat and B. would cause far too many people to want him dead. Using nukes makes people want you dead, using them as blackmail means you intentionally avoided a conflict that would only get you killed.
* {{Prequel}}: After finishing the main story, you can read through the Prologue of Grisaia to see how Yumiko and the others first came to Mihama. That said, they seem to already have most of their character development and don’t act like we’re told they did. Amane is much bolder than stated and Yumiko is much friendlier.
* PrimAndProperBun: Chizuru wears her actually long hair tied up in two buns. When she lets them down, she really does look very young, which bugs her.
* ProjectedMan: Kazuki’s brain was tied to the computer system Thanatos, which she now controls. She can project an image of herself, though it’s how she looked years ago.
* PutOnABus: After Yuuji is confined, he gets a few brief scenes to set up his situation and then the story switches to the Mihama girls and their attempts to find out a way to rescue him. When the story switches back to him, Kazuki narrates a few flashbacks to fill in the gaps after Amane’s own flashback scenes.
* TheQuietOne: Makina when she first arrived at Mihama would speak very little and had a hesitant, pausing tone like she hadn’t spoken much in a long time. Which, of course, was exactly why she was in Mihama in the first place. The moment she realizes that the other girls won’t hate her if she speaks her mind, she suddenly becomes a motormouth.
* RapunzelHair: One of the last cgs in the game shows Yumiko with hair that must be longer than she is tall.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Sakuma stepped in to save Kazuki and Amane right at the end. For her trouble, she was stabbed. Even after, she just continues to forgive Sakashita and pleads for her to act human again.
* RescueRomance: Chizuru hesitantly admits that if there’s going to be any Prince Charming in her life coming for her on a white horse, it’s probably the man who saved her life, Yuuji.
* {{Retcon}}: Michiru’s other personality is no longer a transplanted personality but rather just another personality she made up on her own. So now she’s no longer able to speak English. Presumably she was just very, very lucky in Kajitsu to be able to guess the exact residence of a person and their exact history regarding the death of their daughter. …And responded to the conversation with telepathy.
* TheReveal: As revealed near the beginning “She,” aka the Professor, is Kazuki. Ok, not exactly a huge surprise to people who have been paying attention to certain routes and hints. But that her brain was digitally uploaded into the Thanatos system? That’s different.
* RoomFullOfCrazy: The walls of Yuuji’s closet are covered with various writings about his attempts to keep himself stable, self doubts about his arrogant façade and whether there’s even any point to going on like this.
* RunningGag: Sachi is sent along with Makina to pick up the latter’s air rifle and is instructed to say “I’ll kill you” if anyone bothers her. She says nothing else through the entire scene, starting off with an appropriately hostile tone and then eventually adding happy little music notes to the end of her death threats.
* TheScapegoat: Yumiko’s first theory as to why Yuuji’s name is being plastered all over the news is that he’s being used as a bargaining chip with terrorists. Ichigaya sold him out.
* SecondLove: In the epilogue, when Yuuji is asked who he loves the most he says Asako, to which his questioner irritably responds that she’s dead. And also doesn’t understand his taste, especially when Yuuji says she was cute. She makes it her mission to make Yuuji move on.
* SelectiveObliviousness: To screw with Michiru, Yuuji determines to miss absolutely every obvious sign that she’s trying to seduce him. He quits soon enough though since it’s obviously that sort of scene.
* ShipperOnDeck: In the epilogue, [[spoiler:Kazuki]] feels it’s her mission to make Yuuji pick one of the girls. Doesn’t really care who, though she likes some girls more than others. Though at the same time she makes a pass at him herself, which he brushes aside.
* ShrinkingViolet: Though Amane wasn’t as timid as the reader was led to expect, when Makina arrived she really was shy and nearly silent.
* SilentScapegoat: The last survivor of the bus crash to die was the teacher. After making graves for everyone, he decided to cut the bodies apart so nobody could tell that one of the girls had been partially eaten and therefore save the reputation of the other girls. The plan was that he would die with the shovel in his hands and therefore be considered a lunatic murderer while everyone else would be a victim.
* TheSixthRanger: [[spoiler:Kazami Kazuki becomes the sixth member of the Mihama girls upon her liberation.]]
* SmallGirlBigGun: Makina’s part in the operation involves sniping with an airgun. Apart from the terrible choice of color, it’s also so heavy that she can barely use it. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to move around a lot as a sniper with only one target.
* TheSmartGuy: Yumiko is simply expected to know everything that’s going on regarding motives in the terrorist assault. She has some fairly good ideas too. Later, she’s the only one other than Amane who figures out who the Thanatos system really is and without the benefit of actually having known Kazuki.
** Makina can also count as this for being a fast learner and a DitzyGenius.
* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: When Chizuru dresses up like a student, Yuuji pretends not to recognize her and demands she prove her identity by telling her blood type, height, birthday and three sizes. Afterward, he admits he has no idea what her real measurements are so the questions were pretty pointless.
* SophisticatedAsHell: Heath Oslo at first looks calm, witty and composed, but near the end of the phone call he’s getting somewhat irritable sounding. When the call ends, he suddenly screams with rage now that he doesn’t have to maintain his façade.
* SoreLoser: Kazuki still won’t admit defeat for the one time she lost a guessing game with Yuuji, claiming it doesn’t count because of quibbling.
* SplitPersonality: Michiru’s other personality has an extended conversation with Amane, who just thinks she’s being oddly serious. Thanatos makes it clear that the original story for why she has another personality has changed, though. Somehow, her alternate personality is still smarter than her.
* StalkerWithACrush: Millie once made a bet that Yuuji couldn’t shoot a can at 200 yards with poor lighting and a rifle not rated for sniping. She tried to bet sex, he just told her to do his laundry. Unfortunately, she kept bugging him trying to fulfill what she considered her end of the bet because she was crushing on him pretty hard after that. When even claiming he was gay failed to sway her opinion, he gave up.
* StepfordSmiler
** Yuuji hasn’t adjusted as well to post Asako world as the epilogue of Meikyuu would have had you believe.
** Yumiko assumed Michiru was as happy go lucky as she looked until she heard Michiru getting upset about being left behind briefly at the beach.
* StrangeSyntaxSpeaker: Makina’s normal speech is a weird mishmash that initially puzzled Michiru.
* SuddenlyAlwaysKnewThat: Amane has a boating license. Granted, we knew she already had a driver’s license, so it’s less strange than if, say, Michiru could do it.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Yumiko is still gloomy, aloof and irritable, but her friends are most of the reason she’s doing so much to help Yuuji. Michiru used to call her a tsundere when she thought she could get away with it until Sachi called her a kuudere.
* SuperDeformed: Sachi’s plan is for a chibi Sachi to invade the Ichigaya compound, tunnel through the wall and up into Yuuji’s room all while a similarly low quality rendition of When Johnny Comes Marching Home plays in the background.
* SuperSerum: People who were drugged with the stuff Yuuji was being given become all around better soldiers, though the downside was that they generally all got cancer or committed bizarre self harm out of paranoia.
* SuperSoldier: Yuuji, as a result of experimental drugs and gene therapy is an ideal soldier. He’s the greatest living sniper, holds the unofficial world record for the 100 meter dash and has amazing endurance ability in withstanding G forces, starvation conditions, lack of oxygen or sleep. It’s not exactly the sole result of natural talent, but rather that he was treated with one serum that increased his physical abilities and another that treated the cancer that the first serum also grants. Since he didn’t commit suicide like every other person on that drug, he’s the prime bargaining chip for Ichigaya against Heath Oslo, who is holding the threat of a dirty bomb over Japan.
* SurpassedTheTeacher: [[spoiler:Asako was given her eventually fatal wound when she tried and failed to kill Heath Oslo. During the climax of the story, Yuuji heads in alone to finish the job.]]
* SwordAndGun: During the climax, Yuuji fights in close quarters with the combat knife in his right hand and kills people with whatever guns he can find in his left.
* SwordOfDamocles: Heath Oslo has a small amount of nuclear material. Perhaps not enough to use in an explosive, but enough to give a major urban area tens or hundreds of thousands of cases of possibly fatal radiation poisoning. However, he only uses this to try to grab a small piece of the Thanatos system and recover Kazami Yuuji for his potential in making super soldiers. Nuclear weapons don’t actually have to be used, your opponent only needs to know you have them and they’ll come to the bargaining table. Actually using them would be pointless.
* TalkingInYourDreams: With a dead Asako, maybe. He tells her he’s saved five people and is ready to die now. She looks disapproving but doesn’t contradict him. Earlier games would have made it clear that it was just a dream, but given the brain uploading and super serum stuff in this game it might be real.
* ThePenIsMightier: Yuuji favored ballpoint pens as a killing tool when [[spoiler:he was still an assassin for Heath Oslo as a child. As bit of [[LaserGuidedKarma poetic justice]], it was Oslo himself that thaught Yuuji this, and this is exactly how Yuuji puts an end to him in the finale.]]
* TheTease: Chiara, JB’s assistant, has a way of asking if Yuuji wants to touch her butt in the middle of a conversation. Yuuji assumes she isn’t serious.
* ThatManIsDead: When Amane finally gets around to accusing the Thanatos system of being Kazuki, she reluctantly admits that she does have Kazuki’s memories, but that she’s not Kazuki. Kazuki died. Amane ignores her. [[spoiler:She continues to introduce herself as Thanatos even after coming out of the Thanatos system.]]
* TheirFirstTime: Not Yuuji’s first time, but rather Chizuru’s. He knocks off the usual teasing and tries to be as serious and gentle as possible because he knows that this is important to her.
* ThirdOptionAdaptation: In the canon of this VN and Meikyuu, Yuuji went through platonic variations of all five routes in ''VisualNovel/GrisaianoKajitsu''. This in effect {{Retcon}}s out all the epilogues of the original Kajitsu routes.
* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: Yuuji says that he’ll be going to meet Heath Oslo by himself because it’s something he needs to do personally.
* ThreeWaySex: Makina and Sachi ambush Yuuji, tie him up and have their way with him.
* ThrowTheDogABone: Chizuru had two bonus sex scenes in Meikyuu, but they were more jokes at her expense since they were just daydreams that made her look stupid in front of Yuuji and the other students. In Rakuen, the bonus scene takes place in the middle of the epilogue and is both plausible and rather sweet.
* TitleDrop: [[spoiler:Grisaia no Rakuen is the paradise (Rakuen) on the island of Grisaia, formerly the Gray Island when translated.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: In Kajitsu Yumiko would attack people with box cutters. In Rakuen, she’s possibly the nicest of the heroines. That said, [[spoiler:when Michiru falls in the water after Amane’s disastrous crash landing]] she’s the only one that’s not joking when she says [[spoiler:she doesn’t want to personally dive in and save her.]]
* {{Troll}}:
** Makina actively enjoys pissing people off and screwing with people that won’t fight back. Actually, she seems to stray rather easily into {{jerkass}} territory.
** Thanatos has a strange sense of humor that manifests this way, such as painting Makina's sniper rifle bright pink and [[spoiler: pretending to wear an artificial hand for two years just to freak people out when she took it off]].
* TrueCompanions
** The Bush Dogs don’t leave a man behind.
** When [[spoiler:Michiru is thrown from the truck and Amane pulls away without noticing]] Maki and Sachi instantly leave to go back for her despite the situation.
* {{Tsundere}}: Invoked like always with Michiru, though less than before. She tries to draw strength from being tsundere and is convinced that being tsundere is what allowed cats to survive until the present. Unfortunately, her Ichigaya contact is not amused by her rudeness and she has to let her other personality pretend that Michiru is a foreigner and simply misspoke.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: When Travis first heads out [[spoiler:to deal with the invading Yuuji]] he’s calm, collected and arrogant while Heath Oslo laughs when he’s gone about how he isn’t taking this seriously at all. [[spoiler:When he finally arrives at where the fighting was going on when he left, there is not one single person left alive and Yuuji apparently gone, causing him to start getting worried. Not worried enough: His hand is chopped off before he can even notice. Then he loses the other.]]
* UnexplainedRecovery: [[spoiler:Stabbed, shot and slashed, Yuuji then blows up the floating island with his exploding shackles and somehow survives. Still in the middle of the ocean with no one having any reason to come find him. Not only that, but the reason it took him so long to get back was apparently not because of the fact that he was probably mortally wounded five times over, but rather that the idea of having to just pick one girl made him uncomfortable.]]
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Apparently, [[spoiler:Kazuki’s]] mecha arm is just not worth commenting on. The afterstory hints that everyone might have been simply acting polite [[spoiler:since Kazuki just pops it off like a glove and shows a normal hand underneath.]]
* UnwantedHarem: Yuuji might have gone through all the routes in Rakuen’s version of Grisaia, but he hasn’t really committed himself to any of them, causing great uproar [[spoiler:when Michiru’s other personality kisses him at first opportunity]] in front of everyone. Thanks to that, now all five girls, Millie, JB, [[spoiler:the unsealed Kazuki]] and maybe Chizuru are all hanging around. Quietly sniping at each other when the conversation turns in that direction. At one point he tries to dismiss his popularity by citing a woman that doesn’t love him and the best he can do is Zoey Graham.
* VerbalTic: Yumiko is near terror when she walks into a maid café and the waitress is wearing cat ears and uses the standard ‘nya’ verbal tic. And why is there a Wifi connection in here? This place is much too suspicious.
* VomitDiscretionShot: Almost as a running gag, Michiru just doesen't seem to be able to hold the contents of her stomach. Despite the frequency at which she throws up, whe never get a discretion shot, since there is no separate sprite for the act itself. The very first time it happens however, the scene transitions to a "Please stand by. We are experiencing technical difficulties." screen.
* VoodooShark: After Kajitsu, the writers realized cellular memory had been discredited, so Michiru just has DID now. However, there are two problems with that. One, we saw her travel to America in Kajitsu and speak fluent English with the person who was the mother of the girl that never actually existed now, but Michiru explicitly can’t speak English. Second, the whole point of DID is kind of defeated if you and your other personality know of each other. Mind you, DID isn’t even conclusively proven to exist.
* WarForFunAndProfit: Oslo’s organization has no real ideology to pursue, they just sell people weapons and soldiers to gain money. They’re not pursuing power.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Where did Millie go?
* WickedCultured: The first glimpse of Heath Oslo is him wearing an impeccable red suit, styled hair and using an antique phone.
* WorldsGreatestWarrior: Yuuji is the world’s greatest living sniper and a bonafide SuperSoldier.
* WorthLivingFor: After a pep talk from ghost Asako, he decides maybe he shouldn’t rush too quickly towards dying. Maybe. The five noisy girls from Mihama are still there for him.
* WouldHitAGirl: The first time Millie and Yuuji meet in several years, she runs towards him joyfully and without looking only to run directly into his fist and get knocked over. When Amane gets upset about this, Millie proudly boasts about the time that within ten minutes of meeting him for the first time he punched her in the face.
* YouAreInCommandNow: Kazuki wasn’t killed by the girls after Amane fled. Rather, she was put in charge again after Sakashita, two others died and the other leader simply broke down.
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:Yuuji assassinated]] Zoey’s father, so she pulls a gun on him when they meet up. [[spoiler:She refrains from shooting him until after he kills Heath Oslo,]] but after that [[spoiler:she still doesn’t come for him. Kazuki believes that she was just motivating Yuuji to go kill Heath Oslo and get back safely because he’s the one that really killed her father, not some drugged up kid that was pushed at her father. Also, she can use it against him in the future again if she really needs his help.]]
* YouMakeMeSic: After Yuuji [[spoiler:implicitly tells Heath Oslo that his lieutenant Travis was killed]] he destroys the radio before Heath Oslo can respond. His only response is that it was very rude to not wait for a reply. Did nobody ever teach him manners?
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler:The heavy drugging Yuuji was under has given him the same condition as Asako. Only a matter of time.]] However, in the epilogue [[spoiler:he seems to be doing just fine. So maybe he got over it or something.]]
