** On a Pacifist route, once you enter the Steamworks, you won't be able to freely backtrack until after [[spoiler:you've discovered the secret in Ceroba's house]]. There are mail points in the Steamworks, but Ceroba won't let you use them, and once you've left the area, Martlet accompanies you while you look for [[spoiler:the aforementioned secret]].
* PointOfNoReturn:
** Leaving the Dark Ruins is the first point of no return in the game, as you are unable to revisit there in either route. Flowey even removes his save points if you talk to him after the fight with Dalv, saying that there's no point going back there.
** Until you reach the end of the Dunes on a Neutral or Pacifist route, you won't be able to backtrack to Snowdin. On a Genocide Route, you can't go back there at all because the Mail Whale never shows up.
** Meeting Martlet on the roof of UG apartments will leave you unable to backtrack; in a Pacifist route, Martlet won't let you leave past the outside of the building, on a Neutral route, [[spoiler:you're locked into a fight with Flowey]], and on a Genocide route, [[spoiler:after killing Martlet and Flowey, Clover won't leave past the outside of the building]].
