The story, what little there is, is set in an alternate continuity where Sonic and his friends live on islands and are adventurers who usually clash with Eggman now and then. ''Rise of Lyric'' plot sees Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy fighting Eggman as usual when his robot army outnumber them near a odd temple entrance. Wanting to save his friends and against their objections, Sonic opens the entrance so they can escape into only to find that it was a prison for the titular Lyric who Sonic unwittingly frees. Wanting to fix his mistake, Sonic and his friends set off on a quest to stop Lyric and whatever he has planned as well and continue their tussle with Eggman.

* AluminiumChristmasTrees: Refurbished missiles, which Eggman laments equipping his mech with, are actually a thing that real militaries buy and/or make. They aren't made from missiles that have worn out from overuse, but from missiles that have become obsolete from not being used in decades; put in new, more capable sensors and control systems, if necessary replace batteries that have gone dead from a quarter-century in storage, and you get a refurbished missile.

* InNameOnly: This particular game is commonly considered to be a generic cartoon platformer that happens to star ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' characters rather than a "proper" Sonic title/spinoff. There is also evidence that the original intention for the project was to develop a ''Sly Cooper''-esque title until Sega approached Big Red Button, resulting in the developers retroactively putting the characters into an already half-developed game. This hasn't been confirmed.

We were kinda slow to add this trope, considering the Ancients are pretty prominent.

* {{Precursors}}: Millennia before the events of the games and TV series, there existed a civilization known as the Ancients who, despite creating advanced technology, still lived in harmony with nature and wanted to peacefully control the planet's resources. Too bad one of their own, Lyric, ended up going mad with power, turning on his fellow Ancients and killing most of them. Eventually, [[LastOfHisKind except for an imprisoned Lyric]], the remaining Ancients died out, leaving their technology and the remains of their civilization behind for others to discover and use.

''Shattered Crystal'' plot, apparently set some time after the former game, has Lyric kidnap Amy and Sonic and his friends setting off to rescue her. Unlike the former game. Amy isn't playable, but rather substitutes her for Sticks (who ironically wasn't playable in ''Rise of Lyric'').

* ExcusePlot: None of the games are really rich in lore and basically boil down to the following:
** '''Rise of Lyric''': Sonic accidentally frees a dangerous being and they need to stop him.
** '''Shattered Crystal''': Lyric has kidnapped Amy. Go rescue her.
** '''Fire & Ice''': Eggman mining for dangerous materials and causing fissures that threaten Sonic's home island, with a {{Determinator}} robot trying to guard them. Go stop the both of them.
