* AlternateContinuity: SEGA has confirmed that the show and the game are sub-franchise, which is different from the main games.

''Sonic Boom'' is a spinoff series in the ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' franchise, developed concurrently with the [[WesternAnimation/SonicBoom TV show]] and [[ComicBook/SonicBoom comic series]]. The series began with ''Rise of Lyric'' for UsefulNotes/WiiU and ''Shattered Crystal'' for UsefulNotes/Nintendo3DS, both of which were released in November 2014.

The Grumps also jokingly asked if they were beta testing the released game during the first episode of their play-through.

* AluminiumChristmasTrees: Refurbished missiles, which Eggman laments equipping his mech with, are actually a thing that real militaries buy and/or make. They aren't made from missiles that have worn out from overuse, but from missiles that have become obsolete from not being used in decades; put in new, more capable sensors and control systems, if necessary replace batteries that have gone dead from a quarter-century in storage, and you get a refurbished missile.

A third game in the series, ''Fire & Ice'', [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1TwJmYz3eQ was announced for the 3DS]] and is similar to ''Shattered Crystal'', except Amy is now playable and (as the title states) all characters can switch between fire and ice modes. The plot has Sonic and friends facing Eggman and new villain [[PunnyName D-Fekt]] as they attempt to stop the weather-related aftereffects of the former's Ragnium mining operation from tearing the world apart. The game was released on September 27th, 2016.

* AdaptationalVillainy: Shadow is, in these games, at least less nice, and is much less rational about his decisions, attacking Sonic purely to "prove friendship is weakness." It's not as massive as some other ones though.

WordOfGod states that this is deliberate to show that the main characters aren't worried about how they look, but just do what they have to in order to help others.

* BigBad: Lyric, who is a member of an ancient, snake-like race and wields PoweredArmor, will be the main antagonist of the games.

* ThePowerOfFriendship: [[WordOfGod Was stated]] to be what Sonic, thanks to his loner status, learns as a part of his CharacterDevelopment, however in the final game the times where you could call Sonic a loner are few and far between. Despite that, this trope is still utilized throughout the game, as everyone works together to put a stop to Lyric (Shadow even comments that he thinks Sonic relying on his friends is a sign of weakness, [[spoiler:only changing his mind on it when he sees Sonic and his team had beaten Lyric at the end of the game]]).

* {{Ungrateful Bastard}}s: Tails, Amy and Knuckles act like this when Sonic unwittingly leads them to Lyric's prison and free him. As Sonic frequently mentions however, he didn't have a choice, they were surrounded by Eggman's bots lead by ''Metal Sonic''. Good fighters or not, there was no way they were getting out of that unscathed. What's more, how was Sonic to know Lyric was being kept in the temple? To be fair to the others, Sonic made no effort to join them up front when the robots started arriving en masse.

** Shadow gets knocked into a time portal after his fight with Sonic, whereupon Present!MAIA states that he was knocked into her future. [[spoiler:Said future is at the end of the game.]]

* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: At the end of Shattered Crystal, [[spoiler:Shadow shows up and makes short work of Lyric's "ultimate" machine before kicking him out of an airlock for good measure]].

* DistressedDamsel: Amy in this version. Eventually so does Sticks...

The story, what little there is, is set in an AlternateContinuity where Sonic and his friends live on islands and are adventurers who usually clash with Eggman now and then. ''Rise of Lyric'' plot sees Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy fighting Eggman as usual when his robot army outnumber them near a odd temple entrance. Wanting to save his friends and against their objections, Sonic opens the entrance so they can escape into only to find that it was a prison for the titular Lyric who Sonic unwittingly frees. Wanting to fix his mistake, Sonic and his friends set off on a quest to stop Lyric and whatever he has planned as well and continue their tussle with Eggman.

''Shattered Crystal'' plot, apparently set some time after the former game, has Lyric kidnap Amy and Sonic and his friends setting off to rescue her. Unlike the former game. Amy isn't playable, but rather replaces her with Sticks (who ironically wasn't playable in ''Rise of Lyric'').
