** Creator/LauraDern's character's identity wasn't revealed in the lead up to the premiere of the third season, and interviews consistently stressed that she was playing someone important. Very few fans were surprised when it turned out she's playing [[spoiler:Diane.]]
** Many viewers correctly guessed that [[HateSink Richard Horne]], with his extremely violent behavior, was the [[spoiler:son of Mr. C and Audrey]].

* WrittenInInfirmity: Catherine Coulson was seriously ill with terminal cancer, when she filmed her scenes as the Log Lady for ''The Return'', as a result, the Log Lady in ''The Return'' is also at death's door, sick with cancer. Coulson would eventually succumb to complications from her illness five days after her scenes where shot, and probably as a result, [[TheCharacterDiedWithHim the Log Lady dies after her final scene]].

* CreatorChosenCasting:
** Madeleine Ferguson was created because Creator/DavidLynch was so impressed by Creator/SherylLee that he wanted to have her on the series full-time.
** Lynch cast Creator/MiguelFerrer after seeing him in ''Film/RoboCop1987''.

** The sheer number of cameos by recognizable actors in small roles is very much in line with stunt casting. Creator/TimRoth, Creator/MaryLouiseParker, Creator/MatthewLillard, Creator/MichaelCera and Creator/AmandaSeyfreid all make brief appearances.

* NamesTheSame: There's a character named Mike Nelson. No, his name doesn't have anything to do with the guy from ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000''.

** Neither Lynch nor Frost ever intended to reveal the identity of Laura's killer, at least not as soon as it eventually happen in the show (even though they knew from the beginning that it was [[spoiler:Leland]]).

* FanNickname: Fans aren't quite sure what to call Cooper's EvilDoppelganger, and so nicknames abound, including Booper (a contraction of Bad!Cooper), Doppel Dale, and Coopelganger. In the series itself he goes by Mr. C.

* ActorAllusion: Producer Dino De Laurentiis accidentally came up with the nickname "Kale" for Creator/KyleMacLachlan while they worked with Lynch on ''Dune'', as he could not pronounce the name "Kyle". Lynch loved it and kept it as an affectionate nickname for the next 30-years-plus of working with him. While not explicitly confirmed, it's easy to imagine that Dale is named after Kale.
* AuteurLicense: Lynch and Frost were given total creative control over ''The Return'', which led to it being the monumental MindScrew it is.

* ActorAllusion: Producer Dino De Laurentiis accidentally came up with the nickname "Kale" for Kyle MacLachlan while they worked with Lynch on ''Dune'', as he could not pronounce the name "Kyle". ** Pete couldn't appear due to Jack Nance's death in a bar fight a few years after the show ended, assuming his character survived the explosion anyway.
** Music/DavidBowie's death meant that he was unable to do any scenes as Philip Jeffries [[spoiler:though Jeffries himself still shows up, just in the form of a MechanicalAbomination and voiced by Nathan Frizzel]].

** Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) also portrayed her cousin Maddy. In ''The Return'', she also plays [[spoiler:Carrie Page, who may or may not be Laura Palmer in some alternate dimension]].
** In ''The Return'' [[spoiler: Kyle [=MacLachlan=] portrays Cooper, his evil Black Lodge doppelganger ''and'' Dougie Jones. In the final episode, it's implied that a new tulpa is made so that he can both search for Laura and return to the Jones family]].

* CastTheExpert: The woman who plays Alice Tremond, aka [[spoiler: the owner of the house that [[MindScrew used to be Laura Palmer's]]]] in the final episode, is in fact the real-life owner of the house who had no previous acting experience and was offered the role by David Lynch.
* CastTheRunnerUp: Lynch originally wanted Creator/RobertForster to play Sheriff Harry Truman, but Forster was unavailable at the time due to other commitments, so the role went to Michael Ontkean instead. By the time of ''the Return'', Ontkean had retired from acting and therefore declined to return as Harry, so instead Forster was cast to play Harry's brother, Frank Truman.

* CompletelyDifferentTitle:
** Cantonese: 迷離劫 (Blurred Robbery/Mysterious Tribulation)

* RoleEndingMisdemeanor: Michael J. Anderson demanded more money to appear. Lynch said he couldn't pay it, and so MJA went on a hate campaign against him: His Facebook page is full of comments about Jews, claims that Lynch raped his daughter/killed Jack Nance, and him moaning about the new ''Twin Peaks'' and saying the original is boring and he never watched it. It's hilarious because people are posting on his page (now that he has been replaced by a tree) that perhaps he should "branch out as an actor", "All you ever did was dance about and the tree is better at that", or "Your performance was a bit wooden tonight".
