*** A story by voice director Wally Burr claimed that Welles was under the impression he was to be playing Megatron (despite him retaining his usual voice from the series until he becomes Galvatron) because he was only told ahead of time "he was playing the major villain of the piece" and almost cancelled the session in anger when Burr started reading Megatron's lines for Welles to play Unicron off of (Welles had requested to record alone with only Burr and the sound production crew in attendance so Frank Welker was not there to record with him) assuming Burr was "line reading" him, ie acting out the lines in the way he wanted Welles to say them, something he obviously shouldn't have done with an actor of Welles caliber. Welles apologized for the misunderstanding once everything had been cleared up and completed his recording as Unicron as planned but the fact that Welles knew going in that Megatron was "the major villain of the piece" suggested Welles was far more knowledgeable about the franchise then he'd let on as this was mid 1985 and the franchise was still relatively new (the second season had only just started broadcast around this time). So either Welles had done research into the role, which was harder than it sounds back in that time as there was no internet or TF wiki to casually look up information and certainly put more effort into the role than he'd implied, or he was secretly a fan of the franchise all along or at least had watched the first season on tv.
