[=BoJack=] refuses has shown up in New Mexico hoping to let Diane publish start a relationship with Charlotte, only to find out she already has a family of her book, because it depicts him as a broken man and he believes that nothing good can come from it. With the deadline approaching, he resolves to write his own book and enlists the help of Todd, Sarah Lynn and drugs.own.

!!"Downer Ending" contains examples of:
* ArtShift: During his trip, [=BoJack=] runs into Diane giving advice, ComicStrip/Peanuts style.
* Backmasking: When [=BoJack=] sees Todd and Sarah Lynn wearing each other's clothes and speaking with each other's voices, Sarah Lynn says, in Todd's voice, what sounds like some indecipherable gibberish, but it is actually, "I'm talking backwards. Aaron Paul is dead." played in reverse.
* BodyHorror: A major case of this occurs when after kissing hallucination Diane, [=BoJack=] witnesses her body inflating and multiplying into two.
* BurnBabyBurn: [=BoJack=] attempts this twice to Diane's manuscript by tossing it in a trashcan and tossing a match into it. It doesn't work.
* CallBack:
** [=BoJack=] mentions his failed attempts to convince Sarah Lynn to go sober.
** [=BoJack=] asks Todd if he still wanted revenge for ruining his rock opera.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: [=BoJack=] decides that drugs should be taken with your friends at home, where its safe. This is the conclusion he draws from them nearly killing each other.
* DerangedAnimation: [=BoJack=]'s drug trip involves quite a lot of this, which includes Diane turning into a hideous monster, [=BoJack=] losing his outlines (which he lampshades) before melting into a bunch of colours, and [=BoJack=] turning into a sketch and then a stick figure which is erased by a live-action pencil.
* DownerEnding: Discussed. [=BoJack=] decides to end his story by taking a dip in the lake one final time before allowing himself to drown. Todd and Sarah Lynn decide to give it a real downer ending by murdering [=BoJack=]
** The episode itself ends really darkly with [=BoJack=], near-crying, asking Diane if she thinks he's a good person, followed by a long, painful silence as the giggles of his hallucinated daughter echo in the background.
* DramaBomb: There's a reason why most of this episode's plot is in the tearjerker page.
* EyeScream: During hallucination Diane's transformation, her eye inflates out of its socket and pops.
* FantasyTwist: In [=BoJack=]'s first attempt to write his biography himself, he imagines his parents acting like they want to spend time with him and giving him treats...but then his father gives him a DopeSlap, and they go back to their usual abusive selves.
* FurryReminder: When talking with [=BoJack=] about the book he's writing, Princess Caroline coughs up a hairball.
* HerCodeNameWasMarySue: [=BoJack's=] first attempt at writing his biography.
-->[=BoJack=]: My parents loved me so much, it was crazy. I remember one Sunday afternoon, my mother said...\\
Imaginary Beatrice: Your father and I want to spend quality family time together. All the kids at school envy your intelligence and kickball ability. Here's an ice cream sundae/ice cream sandwich/dream-sicle.
* InsaneTrollLogic: [=BoJack=] and Todd use this to solve both America's gun and drug problem.
-->[=BoJack=]: I know how to solve the drug problem, we'll just take them all, leaving none for the kids!\\
Todd and Sarah Lynn: BRILLIANT!
* LampshadeHanging: In the page caption.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: During his trip [=BoJack=] notices that all of his "outlines have vanished" when the black line art disappears from his animation.
* MoodWhiplash: While in the middle of tripping, [=BoJack=] asks Todd if he wanted to shoot him for ruining his rock opera and Todd responds he's fine with it because he stopped expecting [=Bojack=] to do the right thing.
** The entire trip is one as it goes from from absurd to nightmarish to heart-wrenchingly somber.
** After said downer ending, a member of the audience asks if [=BoJack=] was the horse in Horsin' Around.
* MushroomSamba: Almost a third of the episode consists of [=BoJack=], Todd and Sarah Lynn tripping.
* RidiculousProcrastinator: [=BoJack=] manages to spend six hours playing around with fonts, then continues to look for excuses to not write.
* ShoutOut: At one point, [=BoJack=] runs through a diner of Mr. Peanutbutter clones who do nothing but say their own name. This is lifted from a scene in Film/BeingJohnMalkovich.
* SubvertedSitcom: During his MushroomSamba [=BoJack=] imagines he's back in the 1990s filming his cheery old family sitcom JustForFun/HorsinAround. However, the scene quickly turns surreal. [=BoJack=] (as the Horse) repeats the line "This is all I am and all I'll ever be" to a cheering studio audience, with Ethan quipping "You said it, old man!" in a disturbing deep voice. Then, four-year-old Sarah Lynn's request for the Horse to make her a "penis butter and vajelly sandwich" elicits audience "awww"s before she transforms into the adult Sarah Lynn screaming the same request at [=BoJack=]. Then the whole set falls apart and [=BoJack=] faces an elderly Todd asking him which path he'd like to take in the future.
* TitleDrop: Todd says this when [=BoJack=] ends his story by letting himself drown in a lake.
* WhatDidIDoLastNight: [=BoJack=] finally comes to from his drug trip lying on the ground in the parking lot outside Bellicans. During the time he was high, he did somehow manage to write some pages on his book and send it to Princess Carolyn. Unfortunately, as Princess Carolyn points, what he sent her was pure gibberish, consiting of 20 pages of erotic Series/DoctorWho FanFiction, a recipe for soup, 5 different conspiracy theories about 9/11, and "a bunch of embedded [=YouTube=] that cannot possibly be printed in book form."
* WhosOnFirst: They spend some time talking about how much Dr. Hu's name sounds like Series/DoctorWho. Somehow nobody but [=BoJack=] has ever heard of the show. And yet, after Todd says, "I don't know", somehow, right on cue, Sarah Lynn and Dr. Hu say, "Third base!"
* WritersBlockMontage: Occurs as [=BoJack=] tries to write the book himself.
* WritersHaveNoSenseOfScale: An unusual version, as the "finished" book written by the trio ends up being a bunch of rambling nonsense, including poorly made drawings, erotic Series/DoctorWho fan-fiction, a recipe for soup, at least 10 theories on how 9/11 happened and (handwritten) Website/YouTube links that (as explained by Princess Carolyn) are "impossible to print in a book."

* DirtyCoward: Because of Bojack, Maddie gets alcohol poisoning by drinking too much liquor, so he has to take her to the hospital. However, Bojack does not want to be caught giving alcohol to teenagers and almost killing one of them because of it, so he decides to ditch the scene. After convincing Pete, to lie about where Maddie got the alcohol from, he quickly gets back in the car and asks Penny to drive back to the house, leaving Maddie and Pete alone at the emergency room.
* DoorSlamOfRage: After Charlotte threatens Bojack, she shows how furious she is by slamming the door of the boat cabin in anger behind her, causing Bojack to flinch.

* IronicEcho: Penny tells [=BoJack=] how her cursh Diego does an exchange with her that involves them both saying "hey" to each other which leads into a brief conversation. But when he rejects her and [=BoJack=] instead takes her, he speculates how he can jealously approach her at prom saying "hey", with her saying it back to him.

* ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne: Trip has an erection at the dinner table, and Charlotte asks him what could possibly be arousing him, as he's sitting with his parents, his big sister, and an old man. An offended [=BoJack=] asks her if she's referiing to him as the "old man."

* SubvertedSitcom: This episode starts like a sitcom, even swapping out the normal tune for a cheery sitcom opening, because [=BoJack=] is living his idealized life with Charlotte and her family. It starts with a usual sitcom plot: Charlotte's daughter, Penny, tries to find a date for the prom and [=BoJack=] agrees to help her. But the episode later reverts to the show's more somber tone: [=BoJack=] influences some minors to drink and ends up taking one of them to a hospital when she gets sick. This culminates with [=BoJack=] nearly sleeping with Penny and Charlotte walking in on them just as they about to. As a result, Charlotte kicks [=BoJack=] off her property and their friendship utterly broken beyond repair.

** Learning that Charlotte is married and eventually having her reject him face-to-face doesn't allow Bojack to find any closure from his decades of pining after her, and instead results in him almost sleeping with her underaged daughter Though Penny notes that she's technically of consenting age by New Mexico's laws, Bojack is still over twice her age. * AdultFear: Charlotte is sitting, contemplating, after turning down [=BoJack=] and politely asking him to leave. Then she hears some sounds from the boat, and Penny whispering, "Quiet quiet." Instinct takes over as she climbs aboard and opens the door, seeing her ex's best friend who is in his forties nearly undressed by her seventeen-year-old daughter. Her look of shock is relatable.

* ComfortingComforter: When outside after the dance, Penny is seen wearing the overcoat that [=BoJack=] had on as part of his prom outfit, implying that he gave it to her. Makes sense, considering it's nighttime in the desert and she's wearing a strapless dress.

Added DiffLines:

* MathematiciansAnswer: When they get back to her house, Penny asks [=BoJack=] if they did the right thing by leaving Maddie and Pete at the hospital alone. [=BoJack=] replies that sometimes, when you're an adult, the right thing isn't always the best thing.

* ChangeTheUncomfortableSubject: When [=BoJack=] is first at the Moore family table having conversation, Penny points out how her brother Trip is having a RagingStiffie, much to everyone's disgust. After a bit of banter, Kyle decides to just abruptly ask [=BoJack=] what he's doing in Tesuque.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** [=BoJack=] goes to New Mexico in the hopes of finding Charlotte and living the happy life that she'd offered him two decades before, only to learn that in that time she's already married someone else and now has her own family. When you haven't seen old friends for a number of years, you can't just expect them to be the same person they were when you last saw them.

Charlotte, being happily married, instantly regrets this and refuses to leave her family to start a new life with [=BoJack=], and even tells him to leave their home to avoid tainting her life further.

* HopeSpot: [=BoJack=] at first actually does a mature thing when Penny starts hitting on him: he turns her down. The horse explains to Penny that he's too old for her and that she's still a kid, even if she believes that she's mature enough. Just as the audience takes a sigh of relief, Charlotte turns down his constant requests to elope with him. A few hours later, Charlotte hears strange sounds from the boat and climbs up. She sees Penny about to undress [=BoJack=], confirming that [=BoJack=] succumbed to temptation.

* MamaBear: If you want to be on Charlotte's good side, don't be an OldFlame hitting on her seventeen-year-old daughter. Her rage cows them both, though Penny from what we hear isn't punished because Charlotte rightly sussed that she wasn't thinking things through and [=BoJack=] was the more responsible party.

* SubvertedSitcom: This episode starts like a sitcom, even swapping out the normal tune for a cheery sitcom opening, because [=BoJack=] is living his idealized life with Charlotte and her family. It starts with a usual sitcom plot: Charlotte's daughter, Penny, tries to find a date for the prom and BoJack agrees to help her. But the episode later reverts to the show's more somber tone: BoJack influences some minors to drink and ends up taking one of them to a hospital when she gets sick. This culminates with [=BoJack=] nearly sleeping with Penny and Charlotte walking in on them just as they about to. As a result, Charlotte kicks [=BoJack=] off her property and their friendship utterly broken beyond repair.

** When you haven't seen old friends for a number of years, you can't just expect them to be the same person they were when you last saw them. [=BoJack=] goes to New Mexico in the hopes of finding Charlotte and living the happy life that she'd offered him two decades before, only to learn that in that time she's already married someone else and now has her own family.
** Making a pass at your crush while she's married is bad enough. Allegedly making a pass at her still technically underaged daughter shortly after is about as scummy as you can get. Charlotte is quick to stop whatever was happening and demands [=Bojack=] leave immediately, not at all interested in any apology or excuse.
