* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Anima and Animus, as (godlike) psychics, have green hair. The mangaka commented in his notes on another work, ''Manga/PsychoStaff'', that he always envisions psychics as having green hair, even though everyone else has (for the most part) realistic hair colors and styles.

* BishonenLine: The golems grow more and more humanoid with each successive model, culminating in [[spoiler: the 11th, which is near identical to a human being]].
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:Maimakterion]] whilst questioning the concept of being human.

* ChickMagnet: Yuuhi ends up drawing the attention of Sami, his classmate Hiwatari, Yayoi, [[spoiler:and Anima.]] Mikazuki even complains about it in their last big fight.

* DevilInPlainSight: Mikazuki the Crow Knight is a subversion. He turns out to be just as heroic as anyone else, AxCrazy tendencies, evil aura, and [[SlasherSmile mouth full of canines]] aside. His wish? [[spoiler:Bread for a starving child]]. Sami and Yuuhi are his opposite, secretly plotting against the world while coming off as friendly.
** Also Taiyo the Owl Knight [[spoiler: who also wants to destroy the world]] and his mentor animal Loki [[spoiler: who got so tired of the cycle of battles that he apparently betrayed the knights the last time]]. Later on, [[spoiler: after personally experiencing someone else's death, Taiyo has a change of heart. Meanwhile, Loki's previous Knight killed the others so he could gain the Mage's trust and kill him, but it didn't work. Now Loki is loyal to his ''Knight'', not Anima or Animus.]]

** Grandparent to Grandchild, with Yuuhi and his grandfather.
** Taiyo is neglected by his father and has a bad relationship with his stepmother, but the latter is more of a connection problem. [[spoiler:That much is solved with time.]]

** DishingOutDirt - Shimaki Hyou (He makes golems using dirt)
* EleventhHourSuperPower: As Anima puts it, psychic powers do not have to obey logic but can bend to need, will, and desire... [[spoiler:when Yuuhi somehow ''steals'' the power of Invisible from Yayoi and Shea during his fight with Sami, because he desperately needs the power to be able to stop her.]]

* FamousAncestor:[[spoiler: Anima and Animus and descended from a long line of exceptional people, from medical legends to athletes. This whole line apparently started with Hisame and Hangestu, who already come from a pretty studded lineage.]]

** Yayoi gets in on the act with her periodic appearances in skimpy cosplay. As often as not, she's pulled out of cosplaying in private by Anima, much to her endless embarrassment. Meanwhile Shea keeps hinting she should let Yuuhi in on her hobby [[ShipperOnDeck (for a start...)]].

* FinalBossPreview: The fight with Hekatombaion gave the remaining Beast Knights a small taste of what's to come, as well as formally introduced the Knights to Animus.

** When all of the Beast Knights had assembled, Samidare declares her love for Yuuhi, and says she will do so even if he was to turn on her plans in the last second. Of course, at the moment, Yuuhi wouldn't even dream of betrayal. [[spoiler:But the final battle comes around, and indeed he is the only one that was willing and able to stop her from destroying the world.]]
** Many of the Beasts' mentions of loops and references to "this time" in reference to the battle of the Biscuit Hammer, due to the fact that [[spoiler:the situation ''has'' happened before, multiple times, thanks to Animus and Anima's game resetting the world after it gets destroyed]].
* ForTheEvulz: [[spoiler: Lil' Animus destroys the spaceship he's on, then a hospital satellite, then the entire Earth many times over ''because he can'', and also because killing so many people at once is so thrilling.]]

* GoodCounterpart: [[spoiler:Blue Drives Monster is this to the Biscuit Hammer. Both are weapons that originated from children's toys, and are only visible to people crossing a certain emotional threshold--despair for the Biscuit Hammer, and hope for Blue Drives Monster. Both weapons are also in the hands of the opposite sibling.]]

* GovernmentConspiracy: Hinted at obliquely in Chapter 38 during a conversation between Nagumo and his former partner in the police, but never explored further: some part of the Japanese government seems to be aware of the fight between Anima and Animus, and is willing to take steps to make sure the fight can go on without too much notice from the {{Muggles}}. That, or Animus is able to manipulate the police enough to make sure the fighting remains a secret [[spoiler:even when someone dies]]. [[ParanoiaFuel It's hard to tell which is the scarier prospect.]]

* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Tarou jumps in front of the 9th Golem's lance to save Hanako, but it spears both of them anyway. He uses his wish to save her; Hanako's ''own mentor animal'' (the above BloodKnight mantis) declares it a StupidSacrifice. It's made even worse when it's revealed that Akane could have saved him had he known he could, though thankfully Hanako doesn't hold it against him.]]

** Yayoi and Hiwatari for Yuuhi. They both do make efforts to try to get Yuuhi to date them, but his SingleTargetSexuality for Sami means that they have no hope of being more than friends with him. [[spoiler:Yayoi eventually moves on before the DistantFinale and ends up HappilyMarried to Hyou, but we never do find out what became of Hiwatari]].
** Mikazuki for Samidare. He becomes enamored with her at first sight (similar to how his older brother Hangetsu did for her older sister Hisame), but Sami doesn't pay it much mind, and her heart belongs to Yuuhi. [[spoiler:Similar to Yayoi above, Mikazuki finds love elsewhere, as the ending pretty strongly hints that he's begun dating Subaru, who had a crush on him for the duration of the story]].

* IllGirl: [[spoiler:Samidare. Her [[GenkiGirl current health]] is only temporary, thanks to Anima]].

* InvulnerableKnuckles: Averted with Mikazuki at one point. Played utterly straight with Sami.

** The battle against [[spoiler:the Mage's final golem goes very poorly for the golem.]]

* HardWorkHardlyWorks: Gloriously [[AvertedTrope averted]]. Even after getting a skill upgrade [[spoiler:from Hangetsu's dying wish]], Yuuhi has to practice hard to make more than basic use of it. And much later on [[spoiler:Yuuhi proves he can stomp any other Beast Knight, including the three Mythical Beast Knights, even though he'd lost the fight to become one himself]]. Yuuhi works hard over the series to become as good as he does.

* HotBlooded: Yuki in spite of her normally laidback demeanor. Also, Yuuhi and Mikazuki to a certain extent, though Yuuhi had to endure a lot of CharacterDevelopment to become that way.

* IllGirl: [[spoiler:Sami before taking on the role of Princess; her [[GenkiGirl current health]] is only temporary. This is revealed as the whole reason behind her desire to destroy the Earth.]]
* ImagineSpot: Yuuhi has more than a few, all of them centered around Sami in some way. They range from dating, to married life, and even envisioning her as a (very cute) tengu-themed idol singer.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: Sami devastates the 10th Golem singlehandedly in one fight, leaving Mikazuki staring on in awe and muttering how he "wouldn't mind getting killed by her"... and all Yuuhi can do is agree, musing about how beautiful she is.

* InvulnerableKnuckles: Subverted with Mikazuki at one point. Played utterly straight with Sami.

* {{Kaiju}}: The golems usually get bigger as the numbers get higher. Guess how big the final golems are.

* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: Hangetsu, Tarou and Akitani among the Knights. In the end, Animus, Anima and the animal mentors also pass, though Anima is certain they will all be reincarnated.]]

* MentorMascot: Each knight gets an animal, InvisibleToNormals -- Yuuhi's stuck with the lizard. They really aren't of much help. At least, [[spoiler:not until a small set of them start getting upgraded into the Mythical Beast Knights, gaining a secondary form and lending immense power to their human partners.]] Their main purpose, according to Loki, is to keep the human Knights constantly aware of the supernatural so they're always ready.
* MindOverMatter: All Knights began with limited telekinesis, in the form of a small mobile bubble containing the field of influence. Yuuhi could barely slow down a golem's attack with it. Hangetsu, on the other hand, was able to use ''his'' to rip golems into bite-sized pieces. Tarou & Hanako are able to heat and freeze alcohol and water respectively by manipulating the molecular vibrations.
* MissingMom: Sami's mom, Haruko Asahina, a famous doctor [[spoiler:learning all she could to cure Sami]], and busy with other patients as well. Yuuhi's just wandered off after her husband was killed.
* MoodWhiplash: [[spoiler:From the final battle against Sami until the very end, the mood is predominantly sad, bittersweet at best - but then something ridiculous and hilarious happens to break up the flow before going right back to the melancholy. A reader could choke laughing while still crying.]]

* OneHitPolykill: Tarou's attempt to shield Hanako from Boedromion's humongous spear [[spoiler:ends in both of them getting stabbed, since it's large enough to run clean through Tarou and have room left over for the person behind him. Hanako only survives because of Tarou's wish.]]

** And at the very end [[spoiler:Yuuhi steals the power of Invisible for Noi, and then Anima lets Mikazuki and Mu take the power of Hraesvelgr for a final match against Yuuhi.]]
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Sami is the only one allowed to destroy Earth.

* OutOfFocus: Both of the Asahina sisters drift out of focus to varying degrees in the latter half of the series, as it focuses on the Beast Knights as a group. Sami is still present, but until very late it's not as much about her as it was in the early series. [[spoiler:This is entirely intentional and meant to highlight Sami's feelings of alienation from the group, just as her sickness alienated her from everyone else.]] Meanwhile, Hisame fades out almost entirely once Anima enters the picture.

** Even when Sami doesn't use flying kicks, she often flashes Yuuhi, at the least, and it's a running gag that when she asks if he saw them, he'll respond with the colour or cute animal of the panties that day.

* PoliceAreUseless: Nagumo left the police after deciding (not without reason) that nepotism and politics in the force were keeping him from actually serving justice. There are hints that the cops' hands are tied from higher up when it comes to the secret battle, as well. [[spoiler:In the Distant Finale, Yuuhi is a police detective and is determined not to be useless.]]

* PowerMakeover: With Anima's influence, three of the Beast Knights can transform into the Mythical Beast Knights-- [[spoiler: Shea Moon into Invisible, Dance Dark into Unicorn and Loki Helios into Hraesvelgr]]. Not that it really does much for the animals themselves.

* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Tarou to Mikazuki, Yuuhi and Sami during a youthful hangout once. He added a "yet" to the end though. Yuuhi answers much the same about Sami when questioned about their relationship by Sami's father.

** Naturally, a whole lot between Yuuhi and Sami, though them ending up together is pretty obvious throughout the entire series.

* StableTimeLoop: [[spoiler:During the final battle, Yuuhi comes across his future self who gives him the power he needs to continue on. Also, when Animus dies, it is implied that he will reincarnate as the Master.]]

* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: In the conclusion, [[spoiler:following Animus' defeat,Yuuhi fights off the other Beast Knights before explaining that his feelings for her renders him [[TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou the only one]] who can stop the Lucifer, Samidare.]]

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Furesberg is more properly written as ''Hraesvelgr'', though both are apparently pronounced the same phonetically. However, most people still write it Furesberg (as evidenced elsewhere on this page) because that name was in use first and longest by the fan translators. "Hraesvelgr" is the official name in the Seven Seas translation.

* SuicidePact: [[spoiler:Yuuhi pledges to Sami that he lives for her, strongly implying he would kill himself if she ever dies before him, no matter the circumstances. It helps draw her back from the brink of destroying everything. It's more one-sided than a normal suicide pact but it helps Sami understand that her fears of being alone, even in death, are unfounded.]]

* ATasteOfTheirOwnMedicine: Near the endgame, Yuuhi finally gets a taste of the tail carrying bullying that he's put Noi through when Yayoi catches him upside down. Noi has a hearty laugh about it.

* TheyWouldCutYouUp: [[spoiler:The scientist who knows about Animus and Anima's' powers invokes this on the siblings, saying that he'd adopt them so that the situation would never happen.]]

* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: In the conclusion, [[spoiler:after the defeat of Animus,]] [[spoiler:Yuuhi fights off the other Beast Knights before he offering his explanation that his feelings for her renders him TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou towards the Lucifer, Sami.]]

* TookALevelInBadass: Yuuhi goes from relying on Sami or Hangetsu to save him to being able to rescue another Knight from a golem to [[spoiler: beating Hangetsu in a one on one battle.]]
** And finally, he becomes strong enough to [[spoiler: hold his own against all the other Beast Knights at once... and his Princess.]]
** All of the Knights over time, especially those that gain the power of the Mythical Beast Knights. The difference in combat power for both [[spoiler:Nagumo and Yayoi]] from before their upgrades and after is staggering.

* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: After shots of an explosion caused by Sami and her leaping over rooftops is seen on the news, Sami is confident someone will spin it into something plausible (a nuclear test and a pop idol publicity stunt, respectively).
* UpToEleven: The final battle starts off on a level never seen before in the series and gets more and more intense from there. It involves [[spoiler:Animus's gigantic 12th Golem, the ultimate domain control attack, Shimaki's 12th Golem, the Biscuit Hammer, the Blues Drive Monster, a giant space version of Sami, Animus joining in on the action, Animus getting really serious, Shimaki's 13th Golem and Nagumo riding on Dance the Unicorn to deliver a spinzaku kick to Animus' face!]] in that order and that's only the first part. [[spoiler:Sami and Yuuhi have a big fight after Animus is defeated.]]
* VillainProtagonist: Sami (the titular "Lucifer") and Yuuhi, with the goal of destroying Earth. The other Knights [[spoiler: mostly]] don't know about Sami's intention; Sami and Yuuhi plot to turn against them as soon as the world is saved.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Animus when Sami manages to make a golem in her shape and smash the hammer. He was so used to winning his little game that he can't actually take it that he could be beaten and practically flips going to attack the knights. It's pretty much his version of flipping the table after losing a chess match.]]

* SuddenlySpeaking: The Crow ''never'' talks but logically she ''had'' to at some point to tell Mikazuki about the Biscuit Hammer. When asked, Mikazuki admits that the Crow hasn't spoken ever since he made his wish and sealed their pact, back when Mikazuki was backpacking in India long before he showed up in the manga. [[spoiler: She finally talks during her farewell to Mikazuki.]]

* WhatTheHellHero: If Sami had defeated the Mage and carried out her plan.

* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds - Sami and Yuuhi, again. Yuuhi had a messed-up childhood thanks to his grandfather: [[spoiler:who raised him after his dad was murdered by his colleague and his mom disappeared]]. "Make no enemies - they'll stab you in the heart; make no friends - they'll stab you in the back. It's better to live your life alone". Sami [[spoiler:wants to get a sense of owning the world by being able to destroy it so that it doesn't go on without her [[IllGirl when she dies]]]]. [[spoiler: Akane, who is sent away by his father on the rare occasions that dad comes home, prays every day that the world (or at least the town) would get blown up. His mentor animal Loki the owl just wants this stupid battle cycle to end, one way or another.]]
* WordSaladTitle
* WrongGenreSavvy: A lot of the characters seem to enjoy acknowledging shounen tropes, but miss how often the seinen series subverts them. Mikazuki, in particular, makes his introduction to Yuuhi on a bridge in the pouring rain and casually asks for a fight. When Yuuhi flat-out refuses, Mikazuki flips out at him for not following the cliche, and then [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments bursts into tears and runs off]]. Some of the other characters don't get off so easily. [[spoiler: Tarou and Hangetsu, for starters]].

* YouCantFightFate:[[spoiler:Sami's wish, made when she was a little girl, was to meet with a certain nice older boy again. Guess who that older boy was.]] Yuuhi never had any hope of [[RefusalOfTheCall avoiding the conflict]].

* HeelFaceTurn: A slow-burning one from [[spoiler:Taiyo]].
** Confirmed as the the final Chapters, [[spoiler:Taiyo]] spends the final battle [[spoiler:spamming his healing effect and turning the tide of battle.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Tarou jumps in front of the 9th Golem's lance to save Hanako, but it spears both of them anyway. He uses his wish to save her; Hanako's ''own mentor animal'' (the above BloodKnight mantis) declares it a StupidSacrifice. It's made even worse when it's revealed that Akane is a healer, but Hanako doesn't hold it against him.]]

* InternalReveal: The audience knows she's been planning to destroy the earth all along, but it comes as a shock to the Knights. Cue an entire page of people standing around saying, "Seriously?"

** And taken up another step, the [[spoiler:Blues Drive Monster, Anima's own super-weapon in this game, is invisible to people who have not passed through utter despair and still found hope on the other side, including the Beast Knights. It takes Yuuhi, of all people, to point it out to the rest.]]
* InvulnerableKnuckles: Subverted with Mikazuki at one point. Played utterly straight with Sami. "SAMIDARE PUNCH!"

* BecomingTheMask: Yuuhi. At first, he wanted to destroy the world, and only faked being heroic, but by the series end he's pretty much entirely genuine.

** Exploited in the final arc during Yuuhi and Mikazuki's final fight: as they charge at each other calling out for a punch, Mikazuki feints and kicks him instead.

* AscendedFanboy: Hangetsu, who spent most of his life idolising "Allies of Justice" before becoming the Dog Knight.

* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: Less than half of the Knights are still going to school during the story (Yuuhi, Sami, Yuki, Subaru, maybe Mikazuki), but it barely seems to affect their academic performance.

Iyataki knew for centuries when and where he'd meet Zan, but was still shocked over seeing a floating, talking swordfish. Likewise Hiwatari can see a few minutes into the future, but wasn't able to glean which parts of it were because of her own actions and which were because of something already in motion.

A thoroughly strange (in the best possible way) comedy/adventure/romance {{manga}}, ''The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer'', or ''Hoshi no Samidare''[[note]]It's [[AlternateCharacterReading written as "Wakusei no Samidare"]] ("The May Rain of the Planet(s)")[[/note]] began in 2005 and enjoyed a successful five-year run. It's gained a devoted cult following outside of Japan, who have finally been treated to an official English version - Seven Seas Publishing has released the series in two-in-one volume collections (as ''Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer''), starting with Volumes 1 and 2 together in November 2014, up through 9 and 10 released a year later, completing the series. The manga can also be read fully translated via Crunchyroll. The creator, Mizukami Satoshi, is also responsible for the series ''Manga/PsychoStaff'', ''Manga/SengokuYouko'', ''Manga/SpiritCircle'', and ''Anime/PlanetWith'', among other miniseries and one-shots.

Years later, he realizes the error of his ways, begs his grandson for forgiveness (which he gets) and seems to have changed his relationship with Yuuhi for the better. He gets hit by a car while crossing the street a few months later.]]
* RedOniBlueOni - Mikazuki (Red) and Yuuhi (Blue). Several people over the course of the series, including Hangetsu, comment on how alike yet different they are. They both end up practicing the same martial arts style and their personal domain controls are based heavily on mobility - but Mikazuki fights with passion and intensity while Yuuhi plans and anticipates. And at the very end [[spoiler:Yuuhi ends up working as a police detective while Mikazuki is his rough parallel in the Yakuza, and both have a prominent, near-identical scar over one eye: Mikazuki over his right eye, and Yuuhi over his left.]]

* {{Shapeshifter}} - Maimakterion.
* ShapeshifterGuiltTrip - Maimakterion invokes this against the Beast Knights using their family members as a defensive move. Nagumo subverts it by attacking him anyway, with a grudge fueled newly named technique no less.
* ShapeshifterWeapon - Maimakterion does this.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend - Tarou to Mikazuki, Yuuhi and Sami during a youthful hangout once. He added a "yet" to the end though. Yuuhi answers much the same about Sami when questioned about their relationship by Sami's father.

* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism - FIRMLY on the idealistic side, despite prominent downer characters Yuuhi and Akane, and even multiple permanent character deaths.

* ThereAreTwoKindsOfPeopleInTheWorld - Yuuhi invokes this at the beach, type I being "Those who swim" and type II being "Those who don't".

* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself - In the conclusion, [[spoiler:after the defeat of Animus,]] [[spoiler:Yuuhi fights off the other Beast Knights before he offering his explanation that his feelings for her renders him TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou towards the Lucifer, Sami.]]
* ThreePointLanding - Successfully performed by Yuuhi just before killing his first golem.

* TimeyWimeyBall :The reason [[spoiler:Animus' destruction of each regressive past time doesn't erase him or Anima from existence in a paradox. Loki likens it to a kappa being born in a river, then going upstream to dam the flow and yet still living despite its birthplace being erased. "Time" is just another geographic dimension that those with enough power can move through.]]

* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive - Narrowly averted with Yuuhi, as nobody close to him actually ''dies'' but [[spoiler:his grandfather's illness causes him to make the Knight's wish and seal the pact, swearing him into service]].
* TokenEvilTeammate - Everything about Mikazuki ''screams'' this when he joins up, as well as a LaughablyEvil VillainWithGoodPublicity since everyone but Yuuhi and Nagumo is quickly charmed by him. Then his HiddenDepths come out and it turns out he ''really is that great a guy'', he's just desperate for a WorthyOpponent and latched on to Yuuhi and Nagumo as candidates.

* IllGirl: [[spoiler:Sami before taking on the role of Princess; her [[GenkiGirl current health]] is only temporary]].
** This is [[spoiler:revealed as the whole reason behind her desire to destroy the Earth...]]

* MentorMascot: Each knight gets an animal, InvisibleToNormals -- Yuuhi's stuck with the lizard. They really aren't of much help. At least, [[spoiler:not until a small set of them start getting upgraded into the Mythical Beast Knights, gaining a secondary form and lending immense power to their human partners.]]
** Their main purpose, according to Loki, is to keep the human Knights constantly aware of the supernatural so they're always ready.

* NotAGame : For the series in general once it reaches [[spoiler:Hangetsu's death]], as it had been very light-hearted and comedic despite its premise. And Nagumo, as a former police detective, is ''far'' more serious than the entire rest of the cast, treating the fight as the deadly secret war it is. Compare him to Animus, one of the instigators of the war, who treats it entirely as a game for his own amusement.

* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses: Subverted; [[spoiler: when Anima finally appears, the mentor animals only sigh wearily, Noi the lizard aside. It turns out that Anima is incredibly unreasonable and childish, doing antics like suddenly teleporting her Knights around just so they'll cook for her or stealing Yuuhi's favorite and hard-to-find brand of instant ramen.]]
