Needs Help: Panty Shot

I added folder controls to the wick check.

This is a very old trope, so I think adding "Gratuitous" to the name would help curb misuse. What would a non-gratutous show of panties be?

Well, it's about fanservice more than it is about the gratuity of it.

Oh, right. We split Comedic Underwear Exposure off a while ago. Renaming would still help.

Maybe something like Gratuitous Panty Shot? Panty Shot Fanservice? Sexy Panty Shot? The term "panty shot" is ubiquitous enough that I think we should keep it.

I put the rename adding gratuitous up there as one idea, but I'm open to any others or even if we think renaming is the best solution at all. After all, the biggest problem this trope has is ZCEs, people put it on a page (or even assign it as a character trope) and say "this character has a lot of these" or "it happens in Episode X"

The definition of the trope is fine overall (although I have seen many interpretations of what exactly an "inverted" Panty Shot is supposed to be), but the issue of "trying to add sufficient context without sounding like a creep" is also a problem beyond just the overly general name. This discourages people from fleshing out examples because it requires some very careful writing. This is why I wanted to emphasize gratuity, so that tropers would have a clue on how writing a non-creepy but also contextual example.

Edit: To be more clear, I started the check assuming misuse for "any underwear exposure" was going to be the biggest issue, it definitely was a problem, but ZCEs were way more common.

I'm not convinced a rename is necessarily going to solve the problem. A bunch of the ZCEs in the wick check can be summed up as "this happens a lot to X character/in X work", and adding 'Gratuitous' to the trope name won't make people think those examples need more context.

Whoops, I forgot to tag the page when I made the thread. I've slept since I made the thread, so I remembered to add a tag this time.

I'll go over the name suggestions soon.

It's a pre-exiting term, so the name has to be kept in some way, unless upgraded from No On-Page Examples to exampleless Anime Fan Speak.

I think Gratuitous Panty Shot is not more clear than the current name. The other two names aren't bad, but I'd wait for other ideas. Maybe something like Upskirt Magnet or Consistent Immodest Angle would sound more like a trope (Dangerously-Short Skirt was commonly used as this before disambig). Another alternative is to move examples to Male Gaze and Ecchi.

Averted versions are already covered by Magic Skirt, Marilyn Maneuver and Censor Shadow.

Turning it into an Anime Fanspeak page and moving the examples somewhere else might work.

It isn't an Anime-specific term, so I'd rather just move to D-O. (Honestly, I'd want that without the wick check.)

Agreed. I think there's too much potential for creepy examples otherwise.

Definition Only sounds like a plan.

So D-O is pretty popular for now, but I also wanted to bring up what to do with the examples too.

Panty Shot is already no on page examples, but for the offpage examples, should they get moved to a new trope to cover the current definition of Panty Shot (which will also presumably stay no on-page examples), or migrate fitting examples to other tropes (Male Gaze, Fanservice or one of its subtropes, etc.) while axing the creepy or zero context ones?

Edit: I am aware that we're days off even creating a crowner, let alone voting on it, but I just wanted to see what people's opinions were on this before then .

I think that creating a new trope to cover the current definition would result in the same problems, so I think the examples with sufficient context should be moved to other tropes if possible.

I agree, as was the case with Dangerously-Short Skirt and as will be the case for Who Wears Short Shorts? I suspect.Even though Panty Shot is on a little bit of a different level from the other two, they all seem to gather the same Fanservice-y gushing.

Making it definition-only without indexing it under Anime Fanspeak sounds fine.

adding Gratuitous to the name would probably give it the same issue as Gratuitous English / Gratuitous Japanese where any instance of it happening is considered "gratuitous". panty shot is kind of chairsy honestly and i think intentional fanservicey instances of it can just go to Fanservice while comedic examples are obviously suited for Comedic Underwear Exposure, so making it definition only is fine.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I'm against moving examples to a new trope if we make this definition-only. I neglected to mention that because I made my previous post after getting up from a nap.

Between renaming to restrict misuse, disambiguating and definition-only, anything else was suggested?
