* In the ''Literature/ColdfireTrilogy'', dark fae is (according to the Hunter, the only human who has ever been able to harness it) fragile enough to be weakened by a candle. However, in utter darkness it is powerful enough to stave off death itself, which is how the Hunter has cheated death for centuries.
* In ''Literature/CompanionsOfTheNight'', sunlight kills vampires in an extremely painful manner, and it is ''not'' instantaneous. This kind of death is so excruciating that [[spoiler: when Ethan thinks he’s about to die that way, he begs Kerry to shoot him before he starts frying.]]
* Creator/HPLovecraft's Franchise/CthulhuMythos stories:
** In the ''The Haunter of the Dark'', the titular being (an avatar of Nyarlathotep) has an extreme aversion to light. Any light will harm it and strong enough light will destroy it. In the end it is destroyed by a flash of lightning.
** In ''Literature/TheDreamQuestOfUnknownKadath'', the creatures known as ghasts are killed by bright light such as sunlight.
* Alison Sinclair's ''Darkborn'' trilogy focuses around two races divided by an ancient curse: the Lightborn, who cannot tolerate the dark, and the Darkborn, who are fatally burned by light, except for firelight (they are blind and operate via an inherent sonar ability). Notably [[DarkIsNotEvil most of the main viewpoint characters are Darkborn]].
* ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'':
** Vampires follow this trope, except for the ones in ''Literature/CarpeJugulum'' which temporarily train themselves to be immune. [[spoiler:Granny Weatherwax later undoes this though.]]
** The rather Lovecraftian creature in the old temple in ''Literature/TheColourOfMagic'' also suffers from this.
** Trolls don't get ''weakened'' by light, but in many places the heat of day makes them dumb, and in some cases, like Klatch, almost catatonic. Trolls "turning to stone in daylight" is a misunderstanding of both this and the fact trolls are [[SiliconBasedLife already made of stone]].
* Bram Stoker's ''Literature/{{Dracula}}'' averts or at least downplays this: Dracula is weak only at sunup and sundown. Being in sunlight has no direct ''harmful'' affect on him (he's seen approaching Lucy before the sun goes down), though he does suffer from ShapeshifterModeLock during daytime. However since he's weak at sunup and sundown they use this to great effect when they open his coffin just as the sun sets.
* In ''Literature/TheDresdenFiles'', magic itself seems weakened by sunlight: Spells and wards that aren't constantly maintained tend only to last until the next sunrise. Ironically, Harry notes that this is not because sunlight is in itself purifying, but rather because dawn is a powerful symbol of new beginnings. Standing magic isn't weakened by light itself, but by the start of the day. Sunlight also damages or annoys several supernatural creatures for more traditional reasons.
** The Red Court vampires get hurt by sunlight; Harry hits Bianca with a handkerchief full of stored sunlight and [[GlamourFailure it burns through her meat sack to reveal the bat-thing beneath]].
** The most powerful Reds are immune to this so long as they stay in human form; in giant-demon-bat-from-hell form they're still vulnerable to it.
** Black Court vampires are forced to fall dormant during the day (whether or not they're harmed at all by actual exposure to sunlight isn't made clear). The more powerful ones can still be active during this time, but their powers are somewhat weakened.
** White Court vampires, on the other hand, avert this outright; they're never shown to experience any discomfort from daylight (probably because physically, they're humans who happen to have very hungry demons piggybacking on their souls, as opposed to the blatantly inhuman other two courts).
** Sunlight, by its nature as a force that disrupts magic, will destroy ghosts who are not in "shelter" (such as their graves) when daytime arrives. [[spoiler:Harry]] learns this the hard way in ''Literature/GhostStory''.
* In the ''Literature/FightingFantasy'' {{Gamebooks}}, Balthus Dire is a third-generation SorcerousOverlord over the local {{Mordor}}, whose family is so utterly evil that [[EvilMakesYouMonstrous they have developed]] a lethal vulnerability to sunlight normally suffered only by TheUndead.
* In ''Literature/TheFolkKeeper'', the Folk are repelled by light, including sunlight, starlight, and candlelight.
* In ''Literature/FortunatelyTheMilk'', the wumpires are not keen on daylight, and with good reason.
* In ''Literature/ForgottenRealms'' Legacy of the Drow series, this is what undoes and defeats the Drow Army on the surface during the climatic battle of Mithral Hall. Because their eyes are sensitive to bright light, when the night ends and the sun begins to raise exposing many of them to it for the first time they are left flaying blindly and they are beaten back.
* In the first ''Literature/{{Goosebumps}}'' book, ''Literature/WelcomeToDeadHouse'', the [[NinjaPirateZombieRobot zombie mutant vampires]] of Dark Falls are susceptible to sunlight. They can go out during the day, but it makes them weak and direct sunlight will harm or kill them. As a consequence, they have allowed the trees of the town to overgrow, making the town feel overcast all the time. At the end of the book, when they are trying to [[ImAHumanitarian eat]] Josh and Amanda Benson's parents, Josh and Amanda push over a big tree blocking the sun from shining directly on the townspeople, causing them to die. [[spoiler:It doesn't permanently kill them, though.]]
* In ''Literature/HarryPotter'', Harry speculates Dementors dislike sunlight which is why his fugitive Godfather Sirius is hiding in warmer climates. Supplementary material confirms this, adding Dementors don’t appear in the tropics (although Lethifolds, [[UndergroundMonkey who are Dementors in all but name]], do). This also might explain why Dementors create mist whenever they go and are more commonly seen at night.
* Creator/RichardMatheson's novel ''Literature/IAmLegend'' is about a ZombieApocalypse with the entire human race, but one individual, turn into mutant vampire-like creatures that hate sunlight.
* {{Inverted}} by ''Literature/{{Lamplight}}'', in which the un-named creatures preying on the residents of Crooksfield aren't deterred by light at all - in fact [[spoiler:they need it in order to take physical form]].
* ''Literature/TheMummyMonsterGame'': In book 1, pharaoh phantoms are outright ''killed'' by the lights that the players carry. Unfortunately, by this point in the game, their flashlight batteries just happen to be running low, making the game that much harder.
* In ''Literature/TheNekropolisArchives'', the majority of Darkfolk find sunlight in some way uncomfortable, with vampires being the most severely affected. Thus, for the comfort of its residents, Nekropolis's light comes from Umbriel, the shadowsun, which perpetually casts dim twilight. The Sunstone, a magical artifact capable of producing sunlight, is treated like an ArtifactOfDoom because so many Darkfolk could be harmed by its light.
* [[TheUndead The Dead]] in the ''Literature/OldKingdom'' books are weakened by direct sunlight, and prolonged exposure will eventually destroy them. As such, they're typically either nocturnal, dwell underground, or only come out in daytime under cloud cover, though [[BigBad Kerrigor]] knows a spell to shroud his minions in an incredibly thick and opaque fog if he has to move them during the day. Note also that some necromancers will send their Dead minions (particularly weak ones such as [[OurZombiesAreDifferent Hands]] or [[RaisingTheSteaks gore-crows]]) out in sunlight anyway, to do as much damage as they can via ZergRush before they get burned away — after all, [[WeHaveReserves the Dead are many]].
* In the ''Literature/PresidentsVampire'' series, vampires are burned by direct sunlight, and even when they're sheltered from it, they're automatically weaker during the day than at night.
* In ''Literature/TheRedTent'', Zilpah stays in her tent most of the time to avoid sunlight. Unlike most examples, she is not a supernatural being of any kind, or even particularly evil; the reason she avoids sunlight is that [[IllGirl she suffers from migraines]].
* ''Literature/TheShadowhunterChronicles'': Sunlight (but not artificial light) is lethal to vampires and most demons. The first Greater Demon in the series is defeated by sunlight.
* In ''Literature/ShadowOfTheConqueror,'' [[OurWightsAreDifferent the Shade]] require darkness to use most of their powers, leaving them vulnerable to both sunlight and {{Magitek}} lighting devices. The glowing sunstones also [[KryptoniteFactor inflict terrible pain on contact]].
* In ''Literature/TheShatteredKingdoms'', the Norlander people have this attribute. However, they're still close enough to standard humans to be biologically compatible, and they're not necessarily evil (although some of the people they conquer might tell you otherwise). At least one character of Norlander birth has managed to adapt to the sun well enough.
* Hearteater from ''Literature/TailchasersSong'' has spent centuries deep under the ground and as a result the sun burns him. [[spoiler:His goal is to get rid of the sun and take over the world.]] Hearteater's minions are also hurt by the sun. They only go above ground at night.
* In Creator/JRRTolkien's [[Franchise/TolkiensLegendarium Middle-earth]], the sun and moon are creations and symbols of the forces of good, and the evil servants of the Dark Lords generally have trouble with sunlight.
** Orcs are weakened and frightened by strong light and especially sunlight. They usually march under the cover of night, or under supernatural cloud-cover. On two occasions during ''Literature/TheLordOfTheRings'' series, the Orcs are pushed back by the appearance of a powerful light (though, admittedly, usually accompanied by some good ol' fashioned swords).
** Subverting this was the chief advantage of the Uruk-hai; unlike other orcs, they were part-human and thus could go about during the day without any problems.
** In ''Literature/TheHobbit'', trolls are turned to stone by sunlight. Apparently by the end of [[Literature/TheLordOfTheRings the War of the Ring]], Sauron had overcome this weakness with the creation of the Olog-hai.
** The Nazgûl
*** The fear that radiates from them is weakened during the day, particularly at noon. Everything is less scary by the light of day.
*** They don't see the world of daylight normally, but the presence of living creatures casts shadows in their minds. This is prevented (making it impossible to see them) by the light of the noonday sun.
** Shelob gets burned by the light of Eärendil's star, a Silmaril containing the purest and holiest light remaining in Middle-earth. Indeed the three Silmarilli are the ultimate expression of this trope in Tolkien's Arda: Not only is the mere sight of them too much for most evil creatures, but they are so holy that their touch horribly burns evil creatures and people.
** Subverted in ''Literature/TheSilmarillion'' by Shelob's hideous mother Ungoliantë, a spider-shaped ''thing'' of darkness who greedily ate every speck of light she encountered -- including the [[WorldTree Two Trees]] of Valinor.
** After millennia of being corrupted by the One Ring (not to mention living in a cave), Gollum couldn't stand sunlight, and hated moonlight as well.
** Also true to a lesser degree of elves, who were born under the stars before the sun rose and tend to be associated with starlight and moonlight rather than full day (which belongs to Men).
* In the ''Literature/TowersTrilogy'', night walkers are zombie-like creatures which are pained by daylight. They bury themselves underground during the day, and emerge to stalk the streets at night.
* The ''TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}}'' background book ''Xenology'' features an alien species known as the Umbra, which appear as black spheres that can control shadows and give them physical form, usually in the form of bladed limbs they use for offense. They don't like bright light, but using it against them is risky as light generates more shadows they can use to attack you. An inquisitor kills one by placing it in a room with bright lights on all sides so that no shadows will be generated.
* ''Literature/{{Sunshine}}:'' Vampires in this setting are harmed by light. The exact degree of their vulnerability seems to be proportionate to the amount of evil they have done: Constance (the closest thing to a FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire we ever see) is burned by the sun but can endure moonlight and starlight, while Beauregard (old, powerful, and particularly depraved even for a vampire) can't even ''speak words'' related to light.
* In ''Literature/TheWardedMan'' series, magic arises from the planet's core and is destroyed by sunlight. Demons burn in sunlight (and the most powerful ones can't even tolerate moonlight, only rising on the three nights of the new moon), and humans Invested by magic lose it when Sun touches them.
** Arlen Bales (the titular Warded Man) is the one exception to this. Eating demonflesh has altered his body, allowing him to hold magic within himself even by day. [[spoiler: Later on, his wife Renna acquires the same ability in the same way.]]

* ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'':
** Original ''D&D'' Supplement IV ''Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes'': In the Hyborean mythos (Creator/RobertEHoward's Conan stories), the brylukas (a combination of human, animal and demon) are struck blind for a while by strong light.
** In 1st Edition, exposure to sunlight renders a ChaoticEvil vampire powerless and kill it in 1 turn (10 minutes). In 2nd edition, sunlight kills vampires in 1 round (1 minute).
** 2nd Edition ''Player's Option: Skills & Power'' supplement:
*** When a Shadow Mage specialty wizard cast a spell while in bright daylight or a Continual Light spell, opponents receive a +2 on saving throws versus the spell.
*** Deep dwarves are a non-Evil example. They take a -1 penalty to all rolls when in sunlight or in the area of a ''Continual Light'' spell.
** 2nd Edition ''Complete Psionics Handbook'':
*** When a psionic using the Feel Light power rolls a 20 on their Power Check, they become overly sensitive to light and take 1 HitPoint per minute spent in light for 1-10 minutes.
*** When the Hear Light power is used and the psionic rolls a Power Check of 20, being in bright light causes them to become deaf.
** Both 1st and 2nd Edition:
*** LawfulEvil spectres are made powerless by daylight and both shades and ChaoticEvil shadow demons are much weaker (and easier to kill) in bright light.
*** Goblins and orcs have a more difficult time landing blows when in sunlight.
** Basic ''D&D'' adventure [=IM3=] ''The Best of Intentions'': One plane's inhabitants are sentient bubbles who are destroyed if ordinary light falls on them.
** Duergar and drow are weakened (or dazed) by sunlight, until 4th edition anyway. In 1st and 2nd Edition, when duergar or drow are in sunlight (or the equivalent, such as a Continual Light spell) they lose the bonus to their chance to surprise opponents, have a -2 penalty to Dexterity and "to hit" rolls, and opponents receive a +2 to saving throws vs. their attacks.
** Derro are nauseated by sunlight.
** Myconids are terrified of sunlight; surface-dwellers don't know exactly what it does to them, but they do know that a myconid will die before leaving the Underdark.
** Bodaks take one HitPoint of damage per minute they spend in direct sunlight.
** ''Master Set'' DM's Book and ''D&D Rules Cyclopedia'': Nightshades all suffer a penalty of -4 to hit in daylight.
** ''TabletopGame/DarkSun Monstrous Compendium Appendix -- Terrors of the Desert'':
*** The hurrum is a small brightly colored beetle that dies if it's exposed to direct sunlight for more than one hour. Too bad it lives on the world of Athas, which is mostly hot, sunny desert.
*** The villichi takes a -1 attack roll penalty and a -1 penalty to all psionic power scores when in direct sunlight.
** ''TabletopGame/DarkSun Monstrous Compendium Appendix II - Terrors Beyond Tyr''.
*** The undead monster known as the T'liz take a -4 penalty to their attacks rolls in broad daylight.
*** If a DM uses the random undead generation tables, the undead so created can have a sunlight vulnerability that causes 1-6 HitPoints of damage per minute of exposure.
*** Averted by the shadow giant, which is ''damaged'' by darkness and ''healed'' by the light. WrongGenreSavvy heroes tend to assume the opposite.
** Deep gnomes are a rare non-Evil example. The 1st Edition ''Unearthed Arcana'' supplement says that in bright light their range of vision is reduced to 30 feet and they have a -1 penalty to hit opponents. This was not the case when they originally appeared in the module ''D2 Shrine of the Kuo-Toa'' or in the 2nd Edition ''Monstrous Manual''.
** Kuo-toa take a -1 penalty to hit in bright light.
** T1-4 ''Temple of Elemental Evil'': In the room on Level 3 where the {{PC}}s fight six violet fungi, there are fifty small evil fungi. Any bright light (such as a Light or Continual Light spell) will cause the small fungi to shrivel and die within one minute.
** ''TabletopGame/{{Ravenloft}}'':
*** 2nd Edition boxed set, ''Realm of Terror'' supplement: When a {{PC}} performs extremely evil acts they have to make a Powers Check or suffer a punishment. One possible punishment is the character becoming blind whenever they are in normal daylight.
*** Sunlight is even more lethal for drow vampires than it is for normal vampires or drow, vaporizing them instantly. What's worse, even ''moonlight'' pains them, and even under a new moon, starlight makes them unable to regenerate.
** ''TabletopGame/{{Dragonlance}}'': In the module [=DL14=] ''Dragons of Triumph'', the fireshadow is a ChaoticEvil monster from the Abyss. It is destroyed if it stays in full sunlight for 1-4 minutes.
** ''TabletopGame/ForgottenRealms'': 2nd Edition ''AD&D'' supplement ''Cult of the Dragon''
*** The spell Bonemelt causes the bones in a creature's body to turn to jelly. While a creature is in that state, if it stays in full sunlight for more than seven hours it takes 4-16 HitPoints of damage.
*** The spell Shadow Dragon causes a dragon to turn into shadowstuff. If exposed to light-related spells, the dragon takes 1-6 HitPoints of damage per level of the spell(s). For example, a 1st level Light spell does 1-6 HitPoints, while a third level Continual light spell does 3-18 HitPoints.
** ''Ruins of Zhentil Keep'' boxed set Monstrous Compendium Appendix. Zhentish Sewer Rats hate bright light and take a -2 penalty on all attacks they make while in a Continual Light spell or daylight.
** In the 2nd Edition, LawfulEvil mind flayers have perfect darkvision (at good range) but are blinded by light, being completely blinded by brilliant sunlight. Naturally that's why their plots include "putting out the sun".
** 2nd Edition Advanced ''D&D TabletopGame/{{Planescape}}'', ''Planes of Chaos'' boxed set.
*** Asrai are faerie-like female creatures that melt away in direct sunlight, taking 1-4 HitPoints of damage per minute. They originally appeared in a ''Magazine/{{Dragon}}'' magazine #191 "Dragon's Bestiary".
*** Fensir are trolls that live in the outer plane of Ysgard. They turn to stone if they remain in sunlight for more than a minute.
*** Varrangoin are bats that live in the Abyss. If ''Light'' or ''Continual Light'' spells are used on them, they take 2 HitPoints of damage per CharacterLevel of the caster and penalties of -2 to their attack rolls and saving throws. A Sunburst attack from a Wand of Illumination does 6-36 HitPoints of damage to them.
** 2nd Edition ''Al-Qadim'' setting, ''Arabian Adventures'' supplement. The ''Water Form'' spell changes the recipient into elemental water. While in that form, they take 1 HitPoint of damage per minute they spend in direct sunlight due to evaporation.
** 2nd Edition ''Mystara'' setting ''Monstrous Compendium Appendix''
*** Darkwings take penalties when in bright light. A Light spell gives them -1 on their attack, damage and morale rolls. A Continual Light spell forces them to make a morale check at -2 or flee. If they make their morale check, they will fight at -2 to attack and damage rolls.
*** The rockhome lizard normally lives underground. They suffer 1-6 HitPoints per hour of being exposed to sunlight.
*** The scamille is a giant (6-10 feet wide) intelligent BlobMonster that can assume the shape of an object. If a Light spell is cast upon it, it loses the ability to form new pseudopods for one combat round and is forced to assume its true form.
** 2nd Edition ''The Complete Book of Necromancers''. One of the Unholy Compulsions (curses) that can affect a necromancer is being blinded by bright light.
** ''Magazine/{{Dragon}}'' magazine:
*** Issue #62, article "The gods of the orcs". The orc deity Shargaas lives in a cave system which is darker than the blackest night. He can see perfectly well in darkness but is completely blinded by sunlight.
*** Issue #191 "The Known World Grimoire". Direct sunlight has the following effects on Chaotic (ChaoticEvil) manscorpions: it blinds them, causes them 5-20 HitPoints of damage per ten seconds of exposure, reduces their Dexterity and Morale to 3, causes them to lose initiative in combat, halves their movement rate, and causes them to take double damage from any attack. After ten minutes of exposure, even if the manscorpion still has HitPoints left it burst into flames and automatically dies.
*** Issue #199 "Dragon's Bestiary". ChaoticEvil Gray Trolls are vulnerable to sunlight: it blinds them (which inflicts hefty combat penalties) and inflicts five HitPoints of damage on them per minute of exposure which cannot be regenerated. If killed by sunlight, the gray troll's body shrivels and is reduced to ashes, forever dead.
*** Issue #218 article "Dragon Dweomers". The spell "Shadow Dragon" causes the dragon that cast it to turn to shadow form, which makes it immune to most attacks. One exception is light-based spells such as Light, Continual Light, Prismatic Spray etc.) which do 1-6 HitPoints of damage per level of the spell for each minute the dragon stays in the spell's area of effect. Full sunlight forces the dragon back to its normal form and renders it helpless for a full minute.
*** Issue #227 article "Dragon's Bestiary: Monsters of the Underdark". If the Darkness Elemental is contacted by a spell that creates magical light (Light, Continual Light, Faerie Fire etc.) there's an explosion that does 1-8 HitPoints of damage per level of the spell to the elemental.
*** Issue #243 article "Destriers of the Planes". The Lesser Charnalbalk can't remain on the Prime Material Plane in daylight - it fades away at sunrise and returns to its rider's location at dusk. The Greater Charnalbalk can exist in daylight but takes a penalty to its armor class and all d20 rolls it makes.
** ''Magazine/{{Dungeon}}'' magazine
*** Issue #19 adventure "The Vanishing Village". The monsters known as "house hunters" dislike sunlight, as it causes them a -2 penalty "to hit".
*** Issue #34 adventure "On Wings of Darkness". The created monsters known as darkenbeasts suffer a -1 to attack rolls in bright light.
*** Issue #35 adventure "Twilight's Last Gleaming". Light spells have a 5% chance per level of the caster to destroy a shadeling, and Continual Light spells have a 10% chance per level of the caster to destroy a shadeling. A Sunray spell (which creates sunlight) used against a shadeling will destroy it automatically.
*** Issue #38 adventure ''Horror's Harvest''. The "comet" (actually a meteor) that falls on the village of Delmunster gives off dangerous radiation. One of its possible effects on living creatures is to make the creature unable to stand daylight, taking 1-4 HitPoints of burn damage for each minute it spends in sunlight.
*** Issue #48 adventure "The Oracle at Sumbar". If a Continual Light spell is used on the sahuagin zombies, they will attack with a -2 penalty. If a Continual Light spell is used to block their path, they will not go through it.
*** Issue #54 adventure "Eyes of the Iceborn". An evil creature known as a fogwarden lives in cold fogbanks. They are destroyed by exposure to one hour of sunlight.
** ''Magazine/WhiteDwarf'' magazine
*** Issue #32 adventure "Chaos from Mount Dorren". The pteranodons domesticated by the Cruthite gnomes dislike strong light and suffer a -2 "to hit" penalty in such situations. If they can't escape the bright light, they will panic and suffer a -4 "to hit" penalty.
*** Issue #35 article "Fiend Factory". Dark bats hate light. They fight at -1 "to hit" in sunlight and -2 "to hit" in stronger light.
*** Issue #44 "Fiend Factory". Blacklings are NeutralEvil beings who live underground. They don't visit the surface very often because sunlight hurts their eyes and gives them a -2 "to hit" penalty in combat.
** ''Magazine/{{Polyhedron}}'' magazine #30, article "Beware the New Golems". The Shadow Golem takes 3-18 HitPoints of damage if it is illuminated by a Continual Light spell and is killed if it is exposed to sunlight for three consecutive minutes.
** Mayfair Games's AD&D compatible adventure ''Dragons of Weng T'sen''. The Dark Hound is a ChaoticEvil monster that takes damage from light-based spells as if they were fire-causing spells. Thus, a Light spell does 1-6 HitPoints of damage per CharacterLevel of the caster as if the Light spell was a Fireball spell.
** The Elder Evil Father Llymic has a strong aversion to light; he becomes slowed and clumsy when exposed to any source of light and suffers increased damage from light-based spells, and the touch of the Sun itself causes him to grow insensible and dormant and to become covered by layers of ice. Consequently, a key part of his escape plan involves putting out the Sun for good.
* ''TabletopGame/{{Shadowrun}}'':
** Awakened creatures (including metahuman variants) could have special allergies such as to sunlight. This could cause penalties to target numbers, pain and even physical damage.
*** In the main rules, creatures with this allergy include the banshee (undead elf), barghest (dog-like), ghouls (humans infected with a magical virus), vampires and wendigo (orks infected with a virus).
*** In the 1st Edition supplement ''Paranormal Animals of North America'' the following creatures have this quality: Birdman, Black Annis, Devil Rat, Dour, Dzoo-Noo-Qua, Gabriel Hound, Gloaming Owl, Incubus, Loup-Garou, Piasma, Pricuricu, Shadowhound, Stonebinder and Troglodyte.
** 1st through 3rd Editions. Shamans of the Bat, Owl and Puma totems have a +2 penalty to all of their magical target numbers while in direct sunlight.
* Darklings from ''TabletopGame/ChangelingTheLost'' are humans who were reshaped by [[TheFairFolk the Gentry]] into nightmares, terrors, and other creatures of twilight. As a result, they take a penalty to using Contracts (magical powers) during the day, one that gets worse if they try it while in direct sunlight.
* Two main things do aggravated damage to vampires in ''TabletopGame/VampireTheMasquerade'' and ''TabletopGame/VampireTheRequiem'': [[KillItWithFire fire]], and sunlight. Not only do they hurt like hell, but the mere presence of either can drive [[EnemyWithin the Beast]] into a state of mortal fear where it hijacks the vampire's body and runs shrieking into the dark.
** In ''Requiem'', a vampire's actions during daytime are always capped according to their [[KarmaMeter Humanity]]; the less in touch with their human conscience they are, the harder it is to do anything during the day.

*** The Mothman takes 1-6 HitPoints of Fatigue damage per five minutes in sunlight.
* ''TabletopGame/{{Pathfinder}}'': A number of undead beings, such as spectres, wraiths and geists, are rendered powerless or sickened in sunlight and consequently avoid natural light at all costs. * GDW's ''TabletopGame/DarkConspiracy'':
** Main rules:
*** Bloodkin trolls take one point of damage per combat phase while in daylight and ultraviolet light.
*** Bloodkin vampires take two points of damage per combat phase while in daylight and ultraviolet light.
** Supplement ''Dark Races Volume I Compendium'':
*** The Boogey Man is a monster which [[EmotionEater consumes the emotions of its victims, particularly fear]]. It is [[RedEyesTakeWarning evil, has red]] GlowingEyes and takes 1d6 points of burn damage per phase it spends in sunlight.
*** The Spectrals are the servants of the evil Charons (priests of the evil Dark). Normal light does one point of damage to them per combat phase: ultraviolet light does two points of damage.

*** The Men in Black (MiBs) can see well even in dim light. However, whenever the light level is stronger than daylight, it is more difficult for them to perform tasks unless they wear sunglasses or other eye protection.
* ''TabletopGame/YuGiOh'': A handful of cards fit this bill.
** The most classic example is "Swords of Revealing Light," a Spell Card that prevents all enemy monsters from attacking for three turns and flips any face-down monsters face-up. Its original name is "Protective Seal Swords of Light," the first of a series of cards designed to prevent attacking.
** The picture at the top of the page is a Continuous Trap Card called "Light of Intervention," which prevents either player from Summoning or flipping monsters face-down.
** "Hoshiningen" is a LIGHT-Attribute monster, one of six Level 2 monsters released early on that boost the ATK of all monsters that share their Attribute by 500 and weaken the ATK of all monsters with the opposite Attribute—this one DARK, obviously—by 400.
** Then there's "Consecrated Light." A Level 1 monster with 0 ATK and DEF that is nonetheless capable of shutting down entire Decks. With this monster in play, DARK-Attribute monsters can't be Normal or Special Summoned, nor can DARK-Attribute monsters attack if they're on the Field. And kind of superfluously, "Consecrated Light" can't be destroyed by battle with a DARK-Attribute monster, nor does its controller take damage from such a battle.
** "Barrier Statue of the Heavens" is a monster with 1000 ATK and DEF that prevents either player from Special Summoning non-LIGHT-Attribute monsters. It's one of six Barrier Statues, one for each Attribute.
** "Jowgen the Spiritualist" is a LIGHT-Attribute monster that bars either player from Special Summoning, period. It can also destroy all Special Summoned monsters on the Field if its controller discards a card.
** The Equip Spell Card "White Veil" neutralizes all of the opponent's Spell and Trap cards when the equipped monster attacks. It could fit under this trope if you just look at the card itself; the only thing is that the person who used the card in ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'' falls under LightIsNotGood, which is alluded to with the fact that "White Veil"'s controller loses 3000 Life Points when it leaves the Field.

One exception is light-based spells such as Light, Continual Light, Prismatic Spray etc.) which do 1-6 HitPoints of damage per level of the spell for each minute the dragon stays in the spell's area of effect. ** The Elder Evil Father Llymic has a strong aversion to light; he becomes slowed and clumsy when exposed to any source of light and suffers increased damage from light-based spells, and the touch of the Sun itself causes him to grow insensible and dormant and to become covered by layers of ice.
** In ''Masquerade'', the Followers of Set's clan curse means they are affected by any sufficiently bright light as if it was sunlight. Even the light of the full moon is enough to physically annoy them.
** Mind's Eye Theater LARP supplement ''Liber des Goules''. One Flaw that can be chosen by ghoul characters is Light Sensitivity. The ghoul takes damage from daylight like a vampire, and even bright non-sunlight causes excruciating pain.
* ''TabletopGame/{{Exalted}}'': Charms by the Ebon Dragon -- The Shadow of All Things -- are weaker or can't function at all in sunlight... of Creation. It works just fine under Hell's green sun. Also, they can't be used to defend against Holy charms.
** Most Creatures of Death are greatly weakened or outright destroyed by exposure to sunlight.
* ''Atlantis: The Lost World'' generic RPG setting. [[Creator/JRRTolkien Cave Trolls are turned to stone by sunlight]], and Rock Trolls take 1d6 HitPoints of damage per minute of sun exposure. Vampires can stand the light of day for only a short time, and will then crumble to dust.
* There are several white cards in TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering that focus on this, [[http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=383224 often with the art depicting black creatures such as demons]].
* ''TabletopGame/RuneQuest''

*** Issue #45, article "Dealing With Demons". Demon wolves must be summoned at night because they are demoralized by daylight. Nightmares are black demon horses that dissolve into mist if sunlight falls upon them.
*** Issue #57 article "For the Blood Is the Life". When exposed to sunlight, vampyrs lose their ability to charm opponents and their immunity to attack by bronze weapons. They also lose two points of CON each round they remain in the sunlight. If their CON reaches zero, they will become inanimate. If a vampyr is in its coffin when the sunlight hits it, it is trapped in the coffin until nightfall.
* ''TabletopGame/CallOfCthulhu'':
** In daylight, a vampire loses all of its special powers.
** Hunting Horrors are dispelled by daylight, and a strong burst of light can sear one to dust.
** ''Masks of Nyarlathotep'' supplement.
*** The form of Nyarlathotep known as Fly-The-Light or The Haunter of the Dark can't stand light stronger than starlight. A flashlight or torch light does 1-6 HitPoints, the full moon does 2-12 HitPoints, car headlights or street lights do 3-18 HitPoints, and full daylight does 10-60 HitPoints.
*** A Fog-Spawn is driven off by light as strong as (or stronger than) a flashlight. If trapped by bright light or exposed to daylight, it is forced to return to its own plane.
** ''Fragments of Fear: the Second Cthulhu Companion''. After sixty years of existence, any Servant of Glaaki exposed to strong light (such as daylight) will suffer the Green Death, which causes them to rot away and be destroyed in a few hours.
** ''Dreamlands'': The creatures known as shades are always enclosed in a sphere of darkness. If enough light is applied to penetrate the darkness, the shade evaporates.

Other of her powers require shadows to be present, and bright light will prevent her from using them. Last, she becomes nauseous in sunlight, which will make it difficult to use the powers she has left.
* ''The TabletopGame/BloodOfHeroes'' RPG: the superhero Neon Knight and his mount Knight Mayre lose all of their super powers in sunlight.

* ''TabletopGame/{{Earthdawn}}''. In full sunlight or the equivalent ghoul Attack and Damage steps are at -2.
* Fantasy Games Unlimited's ''TabletopGame/{{Aftermath}}!''. Vampires are human beings mutated by biological agents or radiation. New vampires' eyes are
sensitive to light, and once they are fully changed they are blind in normal will disappear if a strong light (they can see normally if wearing sunglasses).
* Classic ''TabletopGame/{{Traveller}}'' adventure ''Darthanon Queen''. The Dyson monster
is randomly created. It can have the Vulnerability of taking 1d6 damage from intense light.
* In the Literature/FightingFantasy gamebook Citadel Of Chaos, one of the options of killing the BigBad Balthus Dire
shone on her. This is by reaching the windows and tearing down the heavy curtains covering them. Dire, justified as a black sorceror, is deadly vulnerable to daylight, and will drop dead on the spot.
* ''Carcosa: Weird Science-Fantasy Horror Setting'': One possible mutation is Adverse to Sunlight, which causes the victim to take -1 to "to hit" rolls and saving throws in sunlight.
* ''TabletopGame/HollowEarthExpedition'' supplement ''Mysteries of the Hollow Earth''. The Flaw of Albinism causes anyone who has it to take one point of non-lethal damage per hour they spend in direct sunlight.

Kubitarou having oxyopia when she was a difference: instead of multiple specific penalties, drow get a simple -1 penalty to all rolls in bright light (bright daylight and Light/Continual Light spells).
* ''White Wolf'' magazine #44 article "Gargoyles by Night...Life", which introduces the new Gargoyle race for the ''[=NightLife=]'' game. Sunlight causes the skin of Gargoyles to petrify (turn to stone), immobilizing them until night falls again.
* ''TabletopGame/VillainsAndVigilantes''
** Adventure ''Organized Crimes''. The supervillainess Black Empress takes double damage from light-based attacks.
** Adventure ''Devil's Domain''. The Pit Fiend takes triple normal damage from light based attacks, can be blinded by any light-producing attack on a special hit, and a blinding flash attack only requires one hit to blind it.
* ''TabletopGame/{{Arduin}}'' RPG, ''The Compleat Arduin Book 2: Resources''
** Nightmares can regenerate all damage they take at a rate of three HitPoints per melee round except that
alive; her acute eyesight caused by light-based attacks. They can only regenerate light-based damage on the Ethereal Plane and only at a rate of one HitPoint per hour.
** Banshees can't stand sunlight and flee from any kind of light produced by priest magic.
** The Boogie Man undead can regenerate all types of damage except that caused by light-based attacks.
** Shadows take double damage from all light-based attacks.
** Direct sunlight hurts the eyes of Vampyres and can cause blindness. After 11-20 melee rounds of exposure the Vampyre will go into a coma. After several more minutes in the light the Vampyre will suffer RapidAging
her to its true age and will crumble into dust if it's older than its maximum lifespan.
* ''TabletopGame/GammaWorld''
** While in bright
be overly sensitive to light, a mutant with the Dark Dependency mutational defect is nearly blinded and takes 1-8 HitPoints of damage per four hours of exposure.
** ''Magazine/{{Polyhedron}}'' magazine #18 article "Kobolds and Robots and Mutants with Wings, These Are a Few of My Favorite Things". Kobalts are the Gamma World version of the ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' kobold. They have a -2 penalty to hit in direct sunlight.
* ''TabletopGame/TheFantasyTrip''. In his WordOfGod errata for the system in ''Magazine/TheSpaceGamer'' magazine #29, Steve Jackson said that the reason that slimes live underground is that they die if exposed to daylight.
* ''Magazine/SpaceGamer'' magazine #74 article "Roleplaying Count Dracula". If Dracula is in direct sunlight for 30 seconds or more, he will be turned into a grey powder. If the sunlight is indirect (e.g. reflected by a mirror, inside a room with a window that leads outside, etc.), each 30 seconds of exposure will cause him to lose 10% of his HitPoints.
* ''TabletopGame/StarTrekTheRoleplayingGame'', ''Magazine/{{Polyhedron}}'' #32 article "The Kellar: A New Alien Race". While in bright daylight, a Kellar's Dex is reduced by 10, it takes a penalty of +15 to its attack rolls and the flash of a bright explosion will blind it for 1-10 turns. If it wears protective glasses, it takes no penalties from blight light and is blinded for half the normal time by explosions.
* ''TabletopGame/PrincessTheHopeful'': Unsurprisingly, The All-Consuming Darkness and powers derived from it don't do well with bright light.
* ''TabletopGame/{{GURPS}}'':
** ''GURPS Undead'':
*** Shadows and vampires take 1-6 HitPoints of damage per minute they spend in sunlight.
*** Wights take 1-6 HitPoints of damage each five minutes they spend in sunlight.
** ''GURPS Monsters'':
*** The La Llorona spirit takes 1-6 HitPoints of damage per minute in sunlight.
Nightshades are weakened and sickened by all natural light, including that of the moon and stars, while bodaks take active damage when in direct sunlight.
* GDW's ''TabletopGame/DarkConspiracy'':
*** The Boogey Man is a monster
which [[EmotionEater consumes the emotions of its victims, particularly fear]].
*** Jorgal's gremlins have large eyes that allow them to see in darkness as if it were light. However, this also causes them to be blinded for 2-7 combat rounds if they are exposed to bright lights or light flashes.
** The most classic example is "Swords of Revealing Light,"
became a Spell Card that prevents all enemy monsters from attacking for three turns and flips any face-down monsters face-up.
** The Equip Spell Card "White Veil" neutralizes all of the opponent's Spell and Trap cards
straight-out weakness when the equipped monster attacks. It could fit under this trope if you just look at the card itself; the only thing is that the person who used the card in ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'' falls under LightIsNotGood, which is alluded to with the fact that "White Veil"'s controller loses 3000 Life Points when it leaves the Field.she became a spirit.

[[folder:Video Games]]
* [[OurVampiresAreDifferent The Immortals]] from ''VideoGame/{{Boktai}}'' are all harmed by sunlight. You can harm and even kill enemies (and one boss) by luring them under skylights, and to kill immortals once and for all you have to use a machine that zaps them with amplified beams of light.
** Of course, this creates a huge problem for you in the sequel when [[spoiler: Django ''himself'' becomes a vampire. You still need sunlight to charge your MP, but the sun burns you if you stand in it to recharge.]]
* The "Phantom" boss in ''Chasm: The Rift'' is killed by luring him into the light after activating three switches. The [[http://www.abandonia.com/files/extras/26183_game_extra_1.pdf manual]] lampshades this by hinting that he is "dying to see the light."
* ''VideoGame/{{Hanako}}'': At least one Wanderer, when light is shined upon it, will hold its arm over its facial area, while smoke rises off of its body.
* ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion'': most ghosts must be hit by Luigi's flashlight in order to expose their hearts to be sucked up.
** The ghosts in ''[[VideoGame/LuigisMansionDarkMoon Dark Moon]]'' can handle Luigi's flashlight just fine, but Elvin Gadd designed a Strobulb which provides a potent flash to disable them. The ghosts respond with a few items to shield themselves, which must be [[AntiArmor lowered or otherwise removed]] before they can be zapped and vacuumed.
* ''VideoGame/AlanWake'': The game's combat system is based entirely around using light (from flashlights, flares, flashbang grenades, etc.) to damage or render vulnerable the Taken (humans who've been possessed by the Dark Presence): a standard flashlight takes a while to stun an enemy and burn off their darkness shield, but a heavy-duty work light burns them ''much'' faster. The best weapons in the game are the FlareGun and the flashbang: the flare gun will instantly kill anything short of a boss (and do significant damage to bosses) while also dealing SplashDamage when the flare explodes, and flashbangs will kill ''anything'' too close to the blast.
* ''VideoGame/GearsOfWar'': Kryll have an aversion to light.
* ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'':
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaALinkToThePast'':
*** Ganon cannot be harmed when he shrouds the boss room in darkness. But if Link lights up the two torches, it temporarily blinds Ganon and leaves him vulnerable to the Master Sword.
*** Blind the Thief might count. You have to expose him to sunlight to reveal his true form, but it happens before the battle starts.
** Redeads, Stone Chus and Poes in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTheWindWaker'' can be stunned with light. With the latter two, it's the only way to make them vulnerable to conventional attacks.
** In ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess'', our light is not only painful for Twili, but (at least in Midna's case, although she was cursed at the time) fatal.
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaMajorasMask'': while you can defeat the skeleton minibosses normally, they'll just keep reviving over and over unless you shine sunlight on them while they're downed.
** Playing the Sun's Song in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' near Redeads will stun them for a while and in ''Wind Waker'', you can stun them for a few seconds by shining light on them with the mirror shield. Also, the Light Arrows make your bow the only weapon able to weaken Ganondorf (which is foreshadowed when you battle Phantom Ganon in the Forest Temple).
** Stalfos and their variants are often shown as being weak to sunlight. In ''Ocarina of Time'' they will only appear at night, and when the sun comes up will immediately burrow back into the ground. In ''Breath of the Wild'' a similar thing happens... and if you forcibly keep a stalhorse with you as the sun rises, it will disintegrate in the sunlight.
** {{Implied}} in ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaCDiGames Wand of Gamelon]]'':
--->'''Ganon:''' You ''dare'' bring ''light'' into my lair?! '''You must die!'''
* A dragon boss in ''VideoGame/GoldenSun: The Lost Age'', Serpent, is weakened significantly the more sunlight you reflect onto him by making use of the environment. Without that he is nigh-unbeatable.
** The various enemies in ''Dark Dawn'' are said to suffer from an extreme case of this, in that they can't emerge in lit areas, but when the Grave Eclipse goes down, they come out en masse. [[FromBadToWorse And that's just the start...]]
*** One city is safe during the Eclipse thanks to the Alchemy-powered lights that constantly illuminate it.
* Played straight with the bosses in ''VideoGame/Lit2009'', and almost any potential source of light (desktop lamps, cherry bombs, etc.) available in the room may be used.
* In ''VideoGame/MetroidPrime2Echoes'', the Ing must possess other creatures to enter the Light side of Aether, and use of the Light Beam to energize protective fields on Dark Aether can vaporize weaker Ing.
* [[DefiedTrope Defied]] in ''VideoGame/TheWitcher'' saga - a vampire (unhurt by sunlight) gives a lecture about how humans, being helpless in the dark, associate light with hope and by extension attribute light sensitivity to many evil creatures.
* Played with in Creator/AGDInteractive's ''VideoGame/KingsQuestII'' FanRemake. An enchantment-breaking talisman requires that sunlight be shined through it onto the person, creature, or item enchanted in order to break the enchantment.
* At one point in ''VideoGame/TheLostCrown'', Nigel must open a window and let in some sunlight to repel a black, smokey entity that is stalking him. Subverted in that actually defeating the entity takes another step or two, and other ghosts in the game are active in broad daylight.
* ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'': The Heartless, as beings of darkness, are weakened and destroyed by light. At the end of the first game, Ansem is also defeated by the light of Kingdom Hearts pouring out of the Door to Darkness.
* ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil4'': [[TrickBomb Flashbang Grenades]] can kill Las Plagas instantly. Their light sensitivity is the reason why they don't start emerging from their Ganado hosts until night falls. Though general sunlight immunity has been engineered out of them by the time of [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil5 the next game]], the Flashbangs still work.
* ''VideoGame/ResidentEvilRevelations2'': the T-Phobos based B.O.Ws all have an intense allergy to light, allowing you to stun them by shining your flashlight on them. One mid-game boss takes this to the level that your best strategy is to first focus your flashlight on him, then [[AttackItsWeakPoint offload bullets into his heart]] when the light-induced overheating causes it to ''[[BodyHorror burst through his chest]]''. Doesn't get much more weakened by the light than that...
* The final form of ''VideoGame/{{Okami}}'''s boss, Yami, is powered up by darkness and weakened by sunlight. Fortunately, you, as the wolf-goddess Amaterasu, can CueTheSun.
* None of the hostile monsters will spawn in ''VideoGame/{{Minecraft}}'' if there is enough light. In addition, spiders become non-aggressive during sunlight while zombies and skeletons will outright burn.
* In the ZombieApocalypse mission in ''VideoGame/StarcraftII'', the Infested Terrans will outright burn if caught out in the sun. (They don't exhibit this property in any other map; Hanson mentions [[{{Handwave}} Meinhoff's sun emits a ridiculous amount of dangerous UV energy]].) This splits the mission into alternating phases of defense (hole up in bunkers and shoot anything that gets close) and offense (burn the whole map to the ground).
* In ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaIISimonsQuest'', all outdoor creatures are stronger when it is nighttime.
* The ''VideoGame/LegacyOfKain'' series varies from one game to another regarding how light affects vampires. In ''[[VideoGame/BloodOmenLegacyOfKain Blood Omen]]'', Kain is weaker during the day than at night due to the sun's effects, though not outright harmed by it, and light from other sources has no unusual effects. In ''[[VideoGame/LegacyOfKainSoulReaver Soul Reaver]]'', fledgling vampires are killed by exposure to sunlight, but adult vampires are unharmed (with the exception of the Rahabim, who retain their weakness to sunlight into adulthood in exchange for losing their weakness to water). Later games in the series don't mention it one way or the other.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Turok}} 2'', Blind Ones, due to years of living in darkness, are allergic to sunlight, and thus Sunfire Pods kill them instantly.
* In ''VideoGame/{{NieR}}'', Shades take damage when exposed to direct sunlight. As such, they tend only to be active in indoor areas or when skies are overcast. After the TimeSkip, they begin to wear armor to protect themselves from sunlight, but their armor can be damaged or destroyed to expose them.
* ''Franchise/{{Disgaea}}'''s platforming spin-off, ''VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero'', takes a spin on this. The game starts during the morning, and as the stages are cleared and the story advances, time passes until it's dark out, with the difficulty gradually increasing, both seen with the stages changing and adding new elements, and the end of stage bosses getting tougher. It's generally believed that weaker demons are out during the daytime to avoid the stronger demons who come out to play at night, though there do seem to be some exceptions.
* ''VideoGame/InFamous2'' has the Dunbar Beam, a searchlight with amped up UV powers to fight off the Corrupted. No, they're not just weakened, they ''spontaneously combust''. Even tough creatures like Ravagers fall in three seconds flat thanks to these.
* During a mission in ''VideoGame/MassEffect2'', Shepard and his/her squad fight on a planet orbiting an unstable star. The immense radiation quickly shorts out shields, so Shepard must stay out of the sunlight to maintain a tactical advantage.
* Exaggerated with the Gremlin enemies from ''VideoGame/MonsterHunterPC''. They're based on the 80s movie, alright, but with their weakness to light dialed all the way to the max - getting a torchlight to their face for two seconds and they start melting into a puddle.
* The BigBad of ''VideoGame/{{Dragonfable}}'' [[spoiler:the Mysterious Stranger's]] original form had this weakness. He spent the entire game [[spoiler:manipulating Sepulchre, the Shadowscythe, and even the heroes]] so he could create a more powerful body that wouldn't have this weakness. [[spoiler:He recently succeeded by merging with the near-dead Drakath Darkness Dragon (itself a fusion of Drakath, Fluffy the Dracolich and the Ultimate Orb) and became the Ultimate Darkness Dragon. He then summoned every spirit of darkness in the world out of hiding to blanket the world in darkness.]] Luckily, though, he neglected to create a weakness to the newest element, which is then [[EleventhHourSuperPower harnessed by the hero]]...the Element of ''[[spoiler: [[BrickJoke Bacon]]]]''.
* Mentioned as a gag in ''VideoGame/GrandiaII''. Millennia screams about the accursed light of the sun the first time she is seen during the day (The sun had risen while the party was underground). Then she says "Hah! Fooled you, didn't I?".
* ''Franchise/TouhouProject'' has vampires Remilia and Flandre Scarlet, who have the standard weakness to sunlight. The plot of the game they're introduced in, ''VideoGame/TouhouKoumakyouTheEmbodimentOfScarletDevil'', is kicked off by Remilia's attempt to block out the sun with a red mist, so that she can go outside whenever she wants. Unlike some stories' vampires, they wouldn't actually be killed by sunlight. It does, however, turn their skin to ash, which is then absorbed into their body and regenerates into new skin. Presumably, the process repeats for as long as they're in the sun.
* Chaotic units in ''VideoGame/BattleForWesnoth'' are weakened by light; generally this is sunlight provided by the day-night cycle, but some special illuminated hexes (such as lava tiles) and powerful light-magic auras can achieve similar effects.
* In ''VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends'' Cho'Gath will sometimes scream "The daylight...it burns!" when moving. It doesn't seem to slow him down too much, but maybe he'd be even scarier in darkness.
* The furies of ''VideoGame/{{Hakuouki}}'' find daylight very uncomfortable and only function well at night. How severely it affects them varies; most are incapable of doing much of anything in daylight, and [[spoiler:Sanan, Toudou, and Okita]] quickly turn nocturnal and spend the daytime resting listlessly if they're awake at all. On the other hand, {{Determinator}}s [[spoiler:Hijikata and Saito]] steadfastly ignore the discomfort and continue working during the day (and indeed almost stop sleeping entirely); it wears on them and leads to episodes of extremely painful craving for blood, but for the most part they just refuse to give a damn.
** Experimentation on the "water of life" which creates furies eventually allows [[spoiler:Yukimura Kodo]] to create a strain of fury which functions just fine during the day. Since these furies are made on the Imperial side, this makes life harder for just about everybody.
* In ''VideoGame/HeroesOfMightAndMagic'' ''VI'' ''Shades of Darkness'', Dungeon units have this weakness. They all have the "Blessing of Malassa", which gives them a slight resistance to darkness and a slight weakness to light. While there is a magical reason for it (Malassa is the polar opposite and rival of Elrath the Dragon of Light), it's also partly a LogicalWeakness. * The supernatural creature from ''VideoGame/WhiteNoise2'' can be stunned by light. This can be used to rescue fellow investigators when it attacks them.
* ''VideoGame/MightAndMagic VIII'': Although it isn't actually ''shown'' (the mentions indicate to be to lethal degrees), a plot point relies on vampires being subject to this trope -- the Necromancer's Guild of Shadowspire is embroiled in a war with the Church of the Sun, with the war effort hampered by the fact that vampires can only defend Shadowspire during the night (there ''is'' a type of amulet that protects against sunlight, but it serves as a handwave for ''playable'' vampires -- it is far too expensive to outfit an entire army with). Their solution was a localised TheNightThatNeverEnds, but the Church managed to steal the Brazier that had been painstakingly crafted for that purpose. If you want to recruit the Necromancers into the Alliance, you quest is to retrieve the Brazier, tipping the balance of the war in the Guild's favour and making things a lot easier for vampire members of the Guild.
* Constance from ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses'' hates sunlight and sinks into a state of depression and [[HeroicSelfDeprecation self-loathing]] if she has to go outdoors when it's not raining or about to storm. In [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration gameplay terms]], her personal skill, "Circadian Beat", grants her attack power bonuses when she's deployed on indoor maps (or some outdoor maps where the sun isn't directly bearing down on her), but she loses those buffs in favor of defensive bonuses on outdoor maps, and her CharacterPortrait and battle quotes become more pessimistic.
* ''VideoGame/{{Terraria}}'' has the somewhat rare Gnome enemies that spawn underground beneath giant Living Trees. If you can lure them out into the sunlight on the surface, they would turn into mere garden gnome ornaments and die.
* In ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', the boss of [[BuildLikeAnEgyptian Death Chamber]] is [[GhastlyGhost King Boom Boo]], [[KingMook the leader of the Boos]]. King Boom Boo is invincible in the dark, but is weakened when exposed to sunlight, allowing Knuckles to damage him. King Boom Boo has a small ghost following him around that holds an hourglass that, when flipped, temporarily lets light into the arena.
* ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld'': In ''Bowser's Fury'', whenever Mario happens to collect a Cat Shine, its light deals damage to Fury Bowser, forcing him to retreat from one of his rampages. However, as the game goes on and more shines are collected, he begins showing a resistance to the shines, and during the final act, he becomes [[UnstoppableRage so unbelievably angry]] that the Lighthouses warn that their light can no longer contain him, making for a final scramble to collect the final few shines to activate the last Giga Bell.
* Doppelganger in ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry3'' is a LivingShadow who's invincible while in the darkness. But when exposed to light, he's stunned and temporarily vulnerable to attack.
* ''VideoGame/{{Control}}'': After Jesse figures out how to handle "[[LivingShadow sentient shadows]]":

* [[OurVampiresAreDifferent The Immortals]] from ''VideoGame/{{Boktai}}'' are all harmed by sunlight. You can harm and even kill enemies (and one boss) by luring them under skylights, and to kill immortals once and for all you have to use a machine that zaps them ''WebAnimation/DSBTInsaniT'': Averted with amplified beams of light.
** Of course, this creates a huge problem for you in the sequel when [[spoiler: Django ''himself'' becomes a vampire. You still need sunlight to charge your MP, but the sun burns you if you stand in it to recharge.]]
* The "Phantom" boss in ''Chasm: The Rift'' is killed by luring him into the light
[[OurGhostsAreDifferent Boo]], as he gladly tells Bill after activating three switches.
* ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'':
You have to expose him to sunlight to reveal
his true form, but it happens before the battle starts.
* In ''VideoGame/MetroidPrime2Echoes'', the Ing must possess other creatures to enter the Light side of Aether, and use of the
Light Beam fails to energize protective fields on Dark Aether can vaporize weaker Ing.
After living underground for decades, the Dark Elves' eyes just aren't used to sunlight.
* In ''VideoGame/SheepDogNWolf'', you have a PuzzleBoss who runs away from spotlights. Curiously enough, he doesn't seem to have a problem with the sunlight when you meet him earlier in the game.
* In the ''VideoGame/Fallout3'' DLC ''The Pitt'', the Trogs are oversensitive to light, and Ashur's henchmen have installed floodlights in Uptown to keep them out. Wernher's solution to the quest line involves turning off the lights and turning the Trogs loose on the slavers.
** Likewise, the Tunnelers from ''VideoGame/FalloutNewVegas: Lonesome Road'', who are an UndergroundMonkey PaletteSwap of the Trogs, are similarly photophobic due to decades of living underground, thus Flashbangs and Flare Guns are very effective at repelling or frenzying them.

* Kubitarou from ''VisualNovel/SpiritHunterNG'' is sensitive to light, and will disappear if a strong light is shone on her. This is justified as Kubitarou having oxyopia when she was alive; her acute eyesight caused her to be overly sensitive to light, which became a straight-out weakness when she became a spirit.

* In the first ''Literature/{{Goosebumps}}'' book, ''Welcome to Dead House'', the [[NinjaPirateZombieRobot zombie mutant vampires]] of Dark Falls are susceptible to sunlight.

* ''Animation/HappyHeroes'' inverts the trope. In Season 4 episode 45, while fighting the shadows that have been brought to life by Big M., Sweet S. accidentally discovers that they dissolve once they're exposed to total darkness. She then gives Smart S. instructions to destroy a nearby electricity source to darken the city and defeat the remaining shadows.
